Thanks for the encouragement.... if we had all our best players we could beat Wales and maybe scrape a result against the Ukraine.

Vichilich is gone now aswell...

i dont think the scores will be as bad as you're saying Celtic, maybe 2-1 vs Wales and 4-0 vs Ukraine (the goal against Wales is only if we actually bother to have a good striker/s up front, not Smeltz as i've read)

i'll support our boys til i die, but im also being realistic...

It all comes down to the players. If our guys are up for it who knows what will happen. But we can't give the opposition too much respect. I'd be disappointed if our blokes were busy trying to grab autographs or thinking who's shirt they are going to nab after the game. The have to simplify it down to the opposition are human, the same as us. Then we need the players to mentally be in the frame. It's also another shopping window opportunity for some All Whites who are"unattached" to show what they got.

TBH I've given up the ghost on any chance of a result. Its the style of football we will play that I am most interested in. 4-5-1 suggests we are hoping to sneak a lucky goal. Our inexperienced backline tells me we will need a lot more than one flukey goal though.

wales 2-0, ukraine 4-0. We cant score to save ourselves. Even class play in our world such as Leo wont even crak them. If the selectors keep selecting players such as Brockie then they have no chance. Skill is what i want in the team not people that jst chop players. Cause that is what we are known for!

I think we might pinch a draw vs Wales - they are almost going to be fielding a b team by all accounts - but Ukraine will put a couple or more past us. I can't see us scoring, which is a huge worry, yet again.
Thus;
vs Wales 0-0
vs Ukraine 0-3
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

i just want to know why Smeltz is seen as the premier striker in that squad...that really says something about our nation's footballing prowess.

...unless A) the Sunday News is way off OR B) we are trying to lull them into a fake sense of security by subbing him after 10 minutes, if so, Nicely Planned Mr Herbert!

Sadly that is the way it is, we just don't breed strikers around here. The last quality striker we had was Wynton Rufer. You've only got to watch any NZFC game to spot the "barnyard door" nature of Kiwi strikers. Look at the current stats: Totori, Young, Menapi and Jordan...all ineligible for the All Whites, yet these are the guys that top the goalscoring charts. The day you see Kiwi-born strikers dominating the goalscoring stats is the day we are starting to breed 'em. So it's not Herbert's fault. He's only able to deal with what is available and right now its bloody thin up front. Oh, and what does the Sunday News know about NZ football? Honestly, you're wasting good cappuccino money purchasing that rag for football news.

Watching Giggs in the FA Cup Final. He is going to sh1t all over us.

Sorry to say it, but now I am scared. Very scared.

3-0 losses would be a win for us. We are going to have to play very negative defence football and hope the woodwork is on our side.

I think our goalies are going to be very busy.

It is a kick in the teeth losing all our best players!

If we build it, they will come...

i wasnt blaming Herbs, as you said, he can only work with what he's got...but Smeltz?

i couldn't agree more about the state of the NZ front line game. Do ya think Wynton will come out of retirement?

and we all know Sunday News is rubbish for Football news. I read it for the rest of the sport news whcih isnt too bad.

I reckon we lose 2-0 to both.

Three for me, and two for them.

Its no wonder international football is so unpopular in NZ when we have an AW team that can't score goals.

I would be happier watching a team that lets in 5 or 6 goals, if they risked putting a few players forward and scoring 2 or 3 of their own. It would be just like watching West Ham.

No chance of picking up a 0-0 draw with wales.
No chance of scoring any goals.
Complete waste of time tour without full strength, top line players.

0-3 wales
0-4 ukraine.

I'd be very surprised if Giggs and Bellers started. They do have a Euro championship qualifier against the Czech Republic a week after playing the All Whites and with our reputation of being a little agricultural, I suspect they will be on the bench. Regardless of that, I know that Norwich City striker Robbie Earnshaw is rated in the top 10 players in the Championship and he scored around 19 goals for the Canaries this season just ended. I think he has a strike rate of around 25 goals in 39 games for Norwich so that is an extremely good return. I hope whoever is marking Earnshaw is switched on, otherwise he is good enough to kill us off.
Its not a waste of time, as it is the only way we are going to get our ranking to go up. We have to play better international teams and if we  do get a result our ranking will soar. Away goals are valuable in that respect...but of course I can't remember the last time we scored a goal...Estonia?
I don't agree with those who say its a waste of time. That is extremely myopic-visioned. It just means our 2nd and 3rd tier players get an opportunity to prove themselves and who knows, we might find a dog of a player who excells at a higher level. Ricki will know he is on a hiding to nothing. He's not thick. He just has to work out what he wants us to get out of the games.

What about Urlo or Kopravic? Probably the 2 best strikers eligable for the All Whites in the NZFC

If he's signing brockie as he has stated then surely he rates him better than smeltz so brockie to start.

To be honest I was hoping he'd take costa with him for the experience, but he's staying behind.

they probably dont want to burn out Costa. but yeah, it would have been great to see him get a chance against top quality opposition

I think the cancellation of the game against the Ukraine suggests the powers that be were thinking along the same lines as CelticFC's original suggestion - an 8-0 scoreline!
football tragic for too long

I am actually happy with the withdrawel of the Ukraine game. It is ok to lose the odd game 4 or 5 nil in a year, but if we had got a hammering from Ukraine, it would have been one to many this year. The postives of playing against them were heavily out weighed by the negatives. I think the players who pulled out probably knew there was some doubt in this game.

I am feeling more comfortable about the Wales game now. We will be more focused. They won't have the concerns of the Ukraine game to come. The only need to perform for one game now not two.

Giggs is likely to play half a game against NZ. Bellamy is coming back from injury and is in doubt for the Champions league tomorrow night. If he does make it for the Champions league he is going to need some rest before their Euro clash with Czech.
Wales also have had a few players pull out through injury and a few re: Englsih League playoffs.

If we can get lucky and contain Giggs for half the game we might be with a chance to gain some respect out of this game.

If we build it, they will come...

I wouldn't put it past Wales to take this one too lightly, and I'd love to see an unheralded NZ squad of lower-level players pull of the big upset. Maybe with just the one game on the tour they'll be able to focus enough energy into this match to get a result, and maybe with all this negative press NZ Football is getting, the players will really want this one badly to stuff in the media's face.
