Sky coverage seriously fishy

hi guys, first post...

Really interested to read here about Sky's dwindling coverage of Phoenix, A League and other football.

I watched the 1st leg live and was floored by the commentators working 'off tube' (in a room not at the match). I couldn't believe it! What was worse though was the highlights show on Sky Sports Highlights: they took out all the highlights! - i.e. all the meaningful action like the open goal miss, in particular they removed ALL of the All White's chances and offside goal.

I wanted to share this with you guys because this isn't the first time. When All Whites played Iraq I saw the highlights first but they didn't show any near misses. I had recorded the game so watched it in full and couldn't believe they did this. I presumed it was because they were incompetent. But it's happened twice now I seriously think something is suss, it looks seriously like they are delibrately removing all the positive aspects of the All Whites play

Anyone else picking this up with the National Time or with the Phoenix??? Am i bonkers or on to it?

Looking forward to the 2nd leg. Coming from A*ckland, and the flight, match tickets and overnight stop cost me less for 2 people than it did for 2 tickets to Beckhams match up here. Something big is about to happen. Best fans, best stadium, can't wait.

Cheers
Russell

I know, sounds a bit daft right?

But if i were the work experience kid splicing together a few 'highlights' i would be looking to show some of the better NZ bits, as well as some key moments. Doing it once is a bit thick, twice a bit iffy...

Yeah, under Steve Tw's orders!

The highlights of single games on the highlights channel always seem a bit shoddy to be honest.

Re your original post, Puke. Spot on.
The live coverage was cut price in the extreme and I too saw the "highlights".

They played the first 10 minutes, the last 10 minutes and 5 minutes either side of half time. There you go, 30 minutes highlights! Sheer laziness and lack of respect for the consumer. I was appalled.

I know, I know, its serious!

I may have a tin foil hat, but I have always thought that The NZRFU are paying the media to downplay sports that they deem to be in competition with Rugby union.

This year when we beat Aussie in the Basketball, TVNZ had a negative story about how Aussie's best players were out, stuff.co.nz, just had the usual stories about Carter and Lomu.

Just wait, its going to happen in this build up to the return leg, they will run stories first up on the news about the NPC or Netball.

Its in the NZRFU best interest that the New Zealand public don't pay any attention to sports such as  Football and  Basketball.

Its disgusting going to stuff.co.nz which is run by fairfax, wanting to see a story about the all whites and their main sport story is about The Hawkes Bay rugby team.

Its not just Football that they downplay.

I believe that their is corruption going on.

Heck even  the bidding war for the rights of 2011 is probably staged to take away attention from the All Whites.

I think you're going a bit far with this. There is now way the NZRFU are paying off the media...

Id say its more to do with influential journos who have a tendency toward the oval ball.

the more noise the public make about football, the more coverage it will get. the media tells stories that the public want. it's all about sales, so if there is a "market' for football stories, there will be football stories. we just need to make sure the media believe there is such a market

That's my thought too, Tegal...either the decision makers or editors are anti-Football, or its sheer laziness.
If Sky have broadcast a "Highlights" show that was just 10 mins at each end and five mins each side of half time
, as you suggest Turfmore, then to me it strongly suggests the latter.
(I recorded it so I'm going to look at it myself)
'''''
having just seen it...
Sheer bloody laziness or deliberate poor performance  on someone's part, imo!!

If I were Mr Glading and Co. at NZ Football,   I'd be having strong words with Sky ...its Bullsh*t !!
Do Sky have performance obligations to NZFootball or FIFA, given its a WCQ??

Perhaps the powers that be in NZFootball could put it to  FIFA that the broadcaster with rights to their products in NZ is paying lipservice to their obligations here in NZ...perhaps there is another conflicting internal agenda operating?

FIFA's aims might be better served by offering all future broadcasts to the new TV Triumvirate of TV One, TV3 and Maori TV that John Key has just announced for the RWC here in 2011.
Appalling that Sky can make such a poor effort,
show such poor judgement in handling the replay of an NZ National team's game,
AND promote their editing efforts as a "Highlights" package !!!

Perhaps Sky should be had for misrepresentation ..or possible infringements of Consumer Guarantees Act or Fair Trading Act for that effort. NOT impressed, Sky

Ok, Rant over.
I'm just been watching Deaker on Sky Sport 2  and he's had a good stretch with John Adshead, Fallon senior and Ivan Vicelich re AW's v Bahrain. Good effort there, Murray Deaker.

The media should now be allover  this game, instead of the usual BS stories about NPC, Lomu and Netball.

Im beginning to think that our media is dreading the fact that The All Whites will win, and are hoping that we will lose.

Im willinging to put money on it, that in the week leading to the match, there will be some blown up news story about Lomu put out there by TVNZ or fairfax.

Interesting. I always find football highlites of single games on sky a bit wierd. Just grab a few random 5-10 minute portions and call them highlites. When we qualify maybe it will begin to open alot of peoples eyes to football

Sky Sport must be tanking especially when FreeView is increasing in popularity. Lets petition to have football games broadcast on FreeView, just like what they do in Aussieland with FIFA games on SBS.

I reckon thats a high possibility. Except that sky have the rights currently. Itd definetly get them a customer base, however sky may win out in that war as they have premierleague rights. But am sure football is a market freeview would be very smart to get into.

Ive also thought that they should try cover local sports, but no evidence to back this thought up.

In any future submission made to FIFA,NZFootball, Oceania Confed, etc re: negotiating rights for football coverage in NZ that highlights package on the AW v Bahrain game should be produced ,as evidence that Sky don't know what they're doing and don't deserve the rights.
Bring it on Freeview, Tivo ,Ziln......

Brett...

The game is a month away. Air NZ Cup is less than a day. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the media broadcasting articles on sporting events that are a day away.

Shaun ?, CEO of SBS, Australia is a kiwi and former senior executive of TVNZ. He is keen on football and managed to secure or extend the rights to broadcast FIFA matcehs and also some Euro matches on SBS.All we need here is to have a channel on FreeView that can rebroadcast or relay the signal from SBS. This way we are spared by the at best, embarrassing commentary on Sky Sport re football matches.

How about getting the Triangle TV, community access tv channel in Auckland or similar in Wellington, to start the ball rolling and this way, we can all watch and enjoy more football matcehs on FreeView. You save on monthly subs to Sky sport and free yourself from aggros in watching delayed broadcast of football games. You may even get HD signals!!

Football supporters can make regular donations to keep the Football channel alive on FreeView.

True, but have the words BREAKING NEWS,  across the screen when reporting on it???

They should be more coverage of the Football, even though the game is a month away.

The same Triangle who have opened coverage of the O-League with a match being shown delayed at exactly the same time as the Phoenix ?

I think the plan needs a little more thought.

How's my driving? - Whine here

If you're a sky subscriber and want to protest against their performance, cut back on the pay for services such as the Movie channels. Hurt them where it really hurts- in the pocket. I dont bother with the movie package anymore, nor with Sky watch.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!
