If anyone remembers the story of how he came to the attention of NZ football prior to that distressing U20 loss in 2001 can you let me know here and I'll get in touch.  Got someone intrigues by it.

I'm looking at thejam and co. for an answer or if certain others are looking at the forums (Mr Holloway or Mr Stantiall or even - god forbid - Nola)

I'm no good to ya News, I haven't got a bastard clue.
For Nola to answer you, that would mean having a computer, which would involve financial outlay, so I'd write that one off.

I get an email every once in a while that usually ends up with him asking for something...

People remember an uncle who lived here pointing out he was elligible for NZ even though he'd barely visited and was added to the U20 side that lost in extra time to Aus in the U20 qualifiers.

Shane Smeltz

Age:18

Club: Brisbane Strikers

Position : Striker

Honors: Queensland Under-16 and New Zealand Under-20

Yes, you do read correctly, Queensland Under-16 representative.  Shane Smeltz has gained first team experience in the Australian National Soccer League playing alongside two members of the Australian squad in Wayne Srhoj and Jade North.  His displays bought him to the attention of the New Zealand camp who found he had New Zealand parents.  Shane received a last minute call up for the qualifiers in Noumea and sounds like a great addition to the New Zealand team.

Down south we thought they had the wrong Bradley Scott, and after the one with the All White caps played for Otago Utd it only confirmed our theory

I remember those games, they came so close, looking back a sign of greater things to come.
I remember being bloody frustated in the first leg because we were trailing but I thought we were the better side - then Rowie scored followed by Killen brilliant loved still can't believe we lost

An interview with Smeltz in Football+ seems to confirm that:

"The call came when Smeltz was breaking into the National Soccer League at Brisbane Strikers. An uncle alerted Kiwi officials to his heritage and they approached him to play in the Under 20s."

One thing I find alarming about that list is the amount of young kiwis we had in Europe then (true a number of them failed to shine/kick on ala Young and Rayner who both ended up doing spells at the Kingz).

Things have gone backwards over the last 10 years with young kiwis trying their luck in Europe.

I stand by my comment. Milne got released an clearly Woods is there but Smith was on the English card and Reid is 21 so no long a youngster plus it was his family that moved him not football.

Yeah there are examples like Caleb Rufer and Cameron Lindsay but far fewer then 10 years ago.

Someone metioned the US Colleges, we'll that's a well worn path and not too many have kicked on from that (Elliott, Boyens and Nelsen being the most obvious examples and two of them are on the wrong side of 30).

What is interesting is how many of those Aussies have gone on to pro careers whereas quite a few of those kiwis aren't even playing football any more - basically only the ones who were already overseas are in pro leagues now.  That's why the A-League is so key, keeps people in the game

When I was doing Sitter! I did the best ever "Where Are They Now" article. It was for the first NZ team to ever play an international, they beat Aussie in 1922 (I think it was 2-1 from memory).
I listed the players and then, next to each, put DEAD.
Well, I thought it was funny.
