Raises some interesting questions this, doesn't it. Smith wasn't exactly scoring and dominating in the NZFC yet he's earnt an MLS deal.
Does this tell us something about the NZFC -> A-League or does it tell us more about the MLS ?

I don't think so, MLS is a good standard, and although he didn't dominate the scoring charts here that may have more to do with his team mates and lack of opportunities as a result.
I looked at his college stats to see what he did there and he was actually quite prolific.

I was impressed with Jarrod at both the AW's game in Welli vs Vanuatu and for HB in the 4-3 loss to TW earlier in the season....mostly for his work ethic and the lines he ran than for his goal scoring.
Wish him well at Toronto and his arrival strengthens the Kiwi bond there.

yeah I thought the guy has potential when I have seen him (surprisingly actually as I thought it might be his name getting him picked)

I'm ready to get my lack of knowledge knocked down, but could it be the quality of service he received in the NZFC? or does that not really come into it?
also have to say that LA galaxy weren't exactly impressive, what with their striker who fell over the ball etc etc...and the nix were backing up...

I think a part of it will be his college form in the states which will hold him in good stead. Also the MLS does have a proper reserve league and though there is a salary cap they don't have a limit on the number of players in there squad like we do. So where Toronto could take a bit of a punt on a guy with good history at College level who wont cost them too much the Phoenix can only have 23 so they have to get it right and probably can't justify that kind of risk on a squad member

So why did he signed up for the Crystal Palace Baltimore last year after he was the first pick for the Toronto FC from the MLS Supplemental Draft? The CPB gave him no games at all and they were at the USL Second Division level.

Talked to his old man the other day - apparently when he got picked in the draft he damaged a hamstring so that probably explains his lack of game time at CP Baltimore.

Smith, Boyens and Oughton all warmed the pine in the MLS opener between the two sides over the weekend.

Boyens on the bench; but not required.
Smith dropped off the becnh. Well they lost 4-1, that will teach them for not letting the kiwi boys play ;)
If we build it, they will come...

Its pretty sh1t pay for them really isn't it. Not like they will be able to retire after there football career ends.
Do they get other perks as well? like accomodation, food paid for? He is not going to survive on $17k USD. He will need to get a second job.
