Be aware of the kind of weather conditions you'll be experiencing
(characterized as ranging from "very muggy" to "oppressive" with 98% humidity most days and temperatures in June from 29- 31 degrees C. every day).

Still, if young and intrepid you'll handle it.

Be aware there's a lot of crime in Honiara and it's much riskier than a NZ city.
From the UK govt. travel advisory, Solomon Islands:

Safety and Security -Crime

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force has limited resources and response times to calls for assistance can be slow. Incidents of robberies involving violence, handbag snatching, pick-pocketing and harassment, particularly around the Central Business District and Market, have been reported.

There is the potential for trouble owing to both civil unrest and drunken behaviour. Foreigners and expatriates may be attractive targets for violence. Exercise caution if going to local nightclubs and be aware that such venues rarely have adequate fire precautions in place.

Take security precautions at all times, and maintain a high state of personal awareness. Where possible avoid travel around Honiara at night. Particular care should be taken in the squatter settlements around Honiara, White River and the Lungga Bridge, Sun Valley, Matanikau Bridge and Henderson area. Recent security incidents in these areas have included improvised road blocks, sporadic rock throwing and more serious violent criminal acts, including sexual assault, robbery and vehicle hijacking. These areas should be avoided. If you plan to visit rural Guadalcanal, take day trips outside Honiara or visit the island of Malaita you are advised to check this advice before travelling. Visits to other provinces in Solomon Islands are generally trouble-free.

Drug use is illegal in Solomon Islands, and can lead to prison sentences.

Swearing is a crime and can lead to large compensation claims and even jail.

Dress codes, particularly for women, are modest and you will gain respect by dressing appropriately. In certain areas there are taboo sites only visited by men.

Fresh and salt water crocodiles and sharks are common in Solomon Islands waters. Large crocodiles have recently been sighted offshore at Bonegi Beach near Honiara.

NZ Govt. Travel Advisory:

Reviewed: 01 December 2011, 12:30 NZDT
Still current at: 02 April 2012

There is some risk to your security in Solomon Islands due to criminal activity and the risk of civil unrest and we advise caution.

Political tensions can arise with little notice and we recommend that New Zealanders avoid demonstrations and large gatherings as they could lead to civil unrest and turn violent suddenly, as happened briefly on 16 November 2011 following the election of a new Prime Minister. New Zealanders are advised to closely monitor the media and other local information sources for information about safety or security risks.

There are criminal elements within the country, some of whom may have access to firearms. Criminal activity (such as theft and burglary) and some acts of violence do occur, especially around Honiara. Such activity is usually aligned to alcohol consumption, domestic related disputes and land issues. New Zealanders are advised to maintain a sensible level of personal security awareness at all times and avoid travelling late at night and in the early hours of the morning in Honiara.

Anyone know if there's still a NZ police team there? I know there's one in neighbouring Bougainville. If there is just attach yourself to them and you'll be right. There's definitely kiwi aid workers there, I'd say they will be going to games and would know where is safe to go for a drink etc

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

Oh c'mon! The Solomons isn't as bad as described by Big Pete 65. Have you been there mate? I can guarantee you Honiara is much safer there than hanging around South Auckland. Owning guns in the Solomons has been illegal since 2003 you're most likely to get shot in NZ than you would in Honiara. There is in fact over 400 of the RAMSI police force team still in the Solomons which includes the majority of Aust/NZ army if you gonna be a pussy and worry so much about safety. The number of international armed forces has dropped as crime situation has improved since the ethnic tension in 1998-2000. If you're looking for flash hotels/restaurants, 'safer' community and boring football then I suggest stay home or travel to other pacific countries. Go to the solomons for THE BEST football you'll experience. The main stadium holds up to 25,000 spectators which is usually sold out for any international match including all the current O-league matches and i reckon would be awesome if they build a bigger stadium to cater for the thousands of football mad spectators. Overall I think Solomon Is deserve to win this tournament, they give a sh*t more about football much more than NZ does. Unfortunately don't have the best facilities + money to afford the best coaches.
Alcohol - There are liqour outlets in most parts of town including pretty good bars/clubs out by the waterfront of honiara. Main beer in the Solomons is SolBrew.
