Given the prospect of a limited medal haul at these Olympics (granted rowing finals and other events yet to play) I had a look at SPARC's funding recipients.

There are some sports bodies who must consider themselves very lucky (NZ Swimming, Hockey Basketball) spring to mind. See the 2007 annual report (2008 not online yet) Appendix 1 at http://www.sparc.govt.nz/filedownload?id=d994b229-2bac-4a27-b195-18d15557e4ed

e.g for every $1 given to NZ Football NZ Swimming got $4.

I think the funding hierarchy needs a serious shake up.

To be fair Marius the swimmers have had a pretty decent meet. Very few havn't swum PB's with a lot of NZ records being broken.
Basketball i will giva ya, they're still living off the world champs performance. Mens Hockey are doing alright, still a shot for qf if not medal but Womens team struggling, still think they live off the legacy of that pretty good womens team we had around Sydney

I cannot believe the NZ Curling Association got $260,000 in 06/07

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I used to swim, highly rate the sport. But when we can't keep up with the Aussies or the Yanks we need a shake up. BUT we need way more funding for football!!!

Here is the Australian SPARC-equivalent's annual report for comparison:

The Football/Swimming ratio is about 1:2. Or $3m/$6m. The Aussie budget is about $90m vs SPARC's $40m. I've only had a cursory look at the grant allocations in this Annual Report, which might reveal spending in other areas that would affect this comparison.

Canberras A-League goal gets a kick along

The Stanhope Labor Government will provide $2.5 million to help establish an A-League football team

in Canberra.

The funding will assist the bid to have a Canberra team competing in the Hyundai A-League

commencing in the 2010-11 season.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation Andrew Barr joined Canberra A-League bid leader Ivan

Slavich and Capital Football Chief Executive Heather Reid at Canberra Stadium to make the

announcement.

The Stanhope Labor Government is committed to building better cities and stronger communities, Mr

Barr said. A successful A-League team will add to the sporting life of Canberra, providing locals with

more top-quality sporting entertainment and providing visitors with even more reasons to come to

Canberra.

I am pleased to announce the Stanhope Labor Government will provide $2.5 million to help a new ALeague

club meet Football Federation of Australia (FFA) financial requirements if Canberras A-League

bid is successful. This funding will be crucial to ensuring a successful bid actually delivers a Canberra

A-League team.

A Canberra A-League club will be a win for soccer fans and a win for the ACT economy. We know

from experience that the Raiders, Brumbies and Capitals all raise the profile of Canberra through the

media nationally and attract visitors to games in the Territory. We also know that having access to elite

sporting matches locally inspires young Canberrans in particular to get into sport and live more active

and healthy lives.

Mr Barr said thousands of Canberrans have proven their support for the A-League through playing the

game and attending matches.

The fact we have more than 17,000 registered football players in the ACT and such large crowds at ALeague

games like the recent clash between the Central Coast Mariners and the Newcastle Jets

shows Canberrans are great supporters of the A-League and would love to have their own team."
