Although me and the lads aren't on the "fever tour" we'd be well up for meeting with you guys pre and post match to get some lagers in us and warm up the vocal chords.

Have you guys sorted out the replacement "4 Kings & BB"?

we definitely need to do some research as to what is available around the grounds prior to AWs games and if there is a good pub type rendezvous point.

also, could be a good idea, but will require quite a few hard yards, to try and organise an AWs supporters evening, where every kiwi in SA can meet up for a few beers one night.

Hey Marius, we could start by finding out where the other tour groups are staying. If it's in J'burgh then I nominate thier hotel bar
Re the actual games. I'll do some research tonight as to local pubs we won't get murdered/mugged/raped in.

Its no longer a problem.

That's normally why I avoid drinking with Smitty .

On a more serious note, hell yes. I know of another couple of lads from CHCH who're doing a 6 week long trip and are well keen on getting amongst it as much as possible.

Oh, and Rally Point Bravo needs to become official tour language for "local pubs we won't get murdered/mugged/raped in"

make sure you look for pubs etc in rustenberg, nelspruit and polokwane. they may be setting stuff up for the games?

i think our hotel bar would be an option. reasonably central and we probably have the biggest group of AWs travellings fans anyway. ill chat to some of the others and see if we cant come up with a concept thats a little more interesting than turn up and drink.

OK, so far I've found this info:
What's the beer like?
Cold and delicious. South Africans generally drink bottled beer, although most pubs offer a range of draughts. The major producer is South African Breweries, now a huge multinational doing business across the world. Lager is probably the favourite, followed by pilsener. In and around the stadiums, you'll only be able to drink Budweiser - an official Fifa sponsor.

http://www.e-gnu.com/2010guide_page11.html has useful guides on each city.

From what I've found most stadia are in residential type areas. Struggling to find pubs as handy at the almighty BB. Still, the hunt goes on.Toffeeman2010-04-06 21:24:53

Great work, I like the sound of drinking anything but Budweiser though

Thanks for that Mr Negative pants. Very constructive.
ML, try Borders or Whitcoulls, pretty sure they're still open. I'm gonna ask my resident South Africans if any of them have been to our host stadia. Seems unlkely but worth a shot.

Its no longer a problem.

Can we arrange our bus to give a couple hours 'grace' pre- and post-game for this very purpose?  I have a Footprint guide for S.A.  I'll check out the bars recommended and see if any are near the stadia this evening, and get back to you.

virtual books, ipads ... heard of them el grap? some of us have move beyond bookstores.

all the same, i have delved back in time and purchased a Rough Guide to SA.

beginning with rustenberg, it looks like Castle Corner ("an english style pub" with satellite sport) is possibly our best option (there aren't many).

otherwise, rustenberg sounds like a generally horrible and scary place. hooray

I've been flicking through our lonely planet guide and haven't found anything has stood out! Fever tour, any word on rally points for tag along kiwi fans?

I think the best bet pre and post match are the tent cities they are setting up. there's not much in the way of pubs in rusty, polokwane or nelspruit - and no courtenay place. there is info on those cities buried somewhere on the Fifa website.

i think we may also pick a date - maybe 18th and put out an open invitation to all AWs fans to converge on our hotel to drink and watch the England Algeria game.

Rather go on the Sun City trip than watch England

Tell the hotel to book some more beer then!

Pathetic. Not apathetic.

Solo traveller here, flying in on the 19th. Staying in Jo'burg for the first week and will be getting the match day buses to/from Nelspruit and Polokwane for the Italy and Paraguay games.

I would also be keen on meeting more All-Whites for pre/post-match drinks.

guys if we are going to do an AWs supporters night then I think the Sunday 13th might be the best, after that there are a lot of matches on and people will start moving on from Jo'berg.

Other option is Friday the 18th in Jo'berg.

The best bets from Footprint South Africa, 7th edn:

Rustenburg - Royal Bafokeng is about 12km north of Rustenburg itself, in a place called Phokeng.  Nothing around there that I can find in my book.  Google mentions the place as having one bar.  So...lucky's it is.  60p (about $1.20 NZ for a beer - at pre mark-up prices).  Local enterprise might see a bit more in the area, but god knows what we'll do in the hours after the game before the coach comes.

Nelspruit - Mbombela Stadium is 6km West of Nelspruit.  Bugger all around.  Book recommends O'Hagens:  "imported beers, open air terrance and music, wholesome pub meals".  6km walk to stadium.

Polokwane - a place called Montey's, described as "Lively local pub, pool room, bar meals".  15 Min walk to Peter Mokaba Stadium.  Might be worth a look.  Lively, local and ah, we'll see...

In short:  these games are in the wops, and we need to ask coach driver "Kan jy 'n kroeg aanbeveel" (can you recommend a bar)?

Ok - I've renamed this thread, arrange all pre-match meet ups etc in here.

Toffeeman do you get from that that you have to book and pay to get into those bars there?  Does the 200RD include all three?  Not quite sure what you are paying for...

Sounds to me you're paying for the privilege & security.
Though they also mention bus to stadiums. Might be worth chucking $40.- on it.

No 100% sure but think it means entry in to bar/hotel and a secure place to drink. I'm guessing there'll be "door sales" available for a few Kiwis.

Its no longer a problem.
