Heard Michael Glading on radio sport today. He hopes to announce three friendlies in the next 24 hours to be played in Africa before the Con Feds cup.

I think from memory both will miss Confed Cup but will be fit for start of A League (and therefore WC Qualifiers).

Italy? No way! It's scheduled pretty close to the first confed cup match against Spain as well if that date is correct. jamesnz2009-04-03 08:40:51

Italy's at Confed Cup too as World Champions, so probably want an acclimatising run before the tournament starts.

I highly doubt Italy will a) have their A squad at the tournament and b) will particuarly try very hard in the game.

Yeah, they'll probably beat us quite comfortably, but don't see an embarassing scoreline there.

I mean more generally in the Confederations Cup.

As for Confed Cup - I expect a convincing loss to Spain B, closer loss to South Africa, and a wild card game with Iraq where all three outcomes are in play.

Tanzania? Botswana?

Are the big wigs at NZF spinning a globe and picking a country where their finger lands?

Three for me, and two for them.

a game vs Italy. that is a dream come true for me. my two countries playing each other. I really hope NZ beat Italy so I can return a bit of the mockery I'm exposed to everytime I mention the fact that I play football down here...!

NZF should take what it can get.

They're not random countries - NZF was looking for free African nations for some warm-ups. There's a WC qualifying round in early June, so finding opposition probably wasn't easy.

This is great news.  I'm confident we can beat Botswana and Tanzania, but then look at the Thai game - we'll see.  The Italy game will be great, hopefully Nelsen performs only the second ever foul on an Italian player (Zidane having down the first).

I'm happy with the Tanzania and Botswana games as we should get a result out of these fixtures, allow the boys to gel and give them motivation for the confed cup.

I am pretty happy with those African teams.

The top half of CAF teams are the toughest and the most competitive of all federations because the number of teams per WC spots are the highest. So even if they did not reach the WC finals, they will be most toughest teams to play against. I really believe that the CAF is most underestimated of all the confederation. The FIFA rankings of 103 and 121 are incorrect. It should be at least 20 places higher.

I personally believe that we can lose or dig out a scrappy draw against them. I always personally found playing against Africans is tough because of their speed and high ball control skill factor. we have honestly to physically bully them off the ball to get some effect. Not the most ideal to prepare for Italy concerning strategy and tactics but getting use to the climate is going to awkward.

I'd say we would go into all of those matches as underdogs, and we will be lucky to win any of them. Having said that, it's definitely not out of the question, and it's spectacular news that the team will be getting so much international football in before the qualifiers!

evoking words from the past, John Adshead said 'there's nothing like time together and getting that feeling of winning, so you chase that feeling again.'. So well done to the NZ administrators got pulling this off.

If you want to go with rankings, then we are in trouble, as we could'nt beat Thailand. However, we need all the games we can get.

Wonder what the starting line-up will look like against Tanzania.

I would like to see Chris Wood start. I am sure he will get some game time and sub on at some stage. But why not start him, he is by far the on-form striker in our squad just coming out of his season and scoring goals in the reserves, which is a higher level than any of our other strikers are playing at.

If we build it, they will come...

Top lineup maybe, with no injuries..

Siggy won't play until the Italy game at the earliest.

The first two games will most likely be used to give everyone a run and the top XI will play against Italy and then Spain.

Spot on for me I think, but with Vicilich instead of Sigmund until he's fit, and when Siggies ready he could replace Old.
You know we belong together...

I thought Moss was available for these games, but not the WC qualifiers??

If he is Moss to start, but assuming he isn't I'm picking

                            Paston
Mulligan      Boyens   Vicelich   Lochead

                   Elliott      Brown

Bertos                                         James

                   Smeltz     Wood

A couple of thoughts though, if Killen is fit, he will start, if fit for his experience over wood.

Also I think this is pretty closse to our likely mid field set up, but personally I'd like to see James play more centrally, probaly our techinically best player in the center, excellent distributor and has a real engine so will definately get forward and back. Unfortunately due to our lack of wide players i think is going to hinder and stop this and force him wide left.

I think you will see Aaron Scott play in at least one of these games... really rate him and not just because he used to play for Mighty Melville Utd fat controllor2009-05-29 19:54:08
