I SAW  THE WHOle  conf  cup

all whites  3 games

and  nz needs  some  changes  to get a real chance

for instance   the best  players  that  i saw  from  your team  were  the smallest or  the  faster players  like  mulligan/games/ bertos/ bright/oughton/ even elliot at  34

it is a must that

nz  needs their  faster  players in that  game

my best  nz team  from the players  that i saw  could be

   paston (moss is suspended)

boyens(rb)  sigmund   nelsen  lochhead/mulligan

mulligan/james    elliot   brown   oughton   bertos/ mcglinchey

                       smeltz/killen/fallon

4-5-1  formation

i  liked  what i saw  from kris bright  he can  bring  some bite  in an  attacking  minded  tactic. he can be  what we call  in football an IMPACT player  from the bench

herbert  should play  boyens  as a right back, sigmund with him, nelsen and  lochhead or mulligan

other option is bringing  vicellich in the team  the thing is that  speed  is  needed  for that  arabic game , and those  players  are  fast  and  not  so  tall

the best  way  for nz  to get the  play off is by  playing  the smallest , fastest  team available

bright has speed as  bertos/oughton/ mulligan/lochhead, james /mcglinchey   /NELSEN/smeltz

nz was  exposed  for  their taller  smaller players  in the  confed cup,  against  smallest  and faster  players

for the  away  leg  i  would  play  a  small  fast  formation of   4-4-1-1

with  james (he scored  some CL  goals for Tampere)   as  a  linker  behind   killen/smeltz or  fallon

Just so you know Javier, Mulligan is RUBBISH in defence, and a last resort for midfield.

                           Elliot
 Bertos                                         McGlinchey

i like  mulligan  as a  holding midfielder, and overall he is a good player  but  not a

maybe playing  mulligan as  a holding  midfielder  ahead of  the back  for  and  near    brown  and elliot  could be a  solution

for me  the best  team for this games  is  the  smallest and  fastest the u can come up with ,  specially  in  midfield...

my team  is

                           paston

boyens   nelsen  sigmund   lochhead/winston reid

                      mulligan/winston reid
                   brown/    elliot

james                                    bertos/

                 killen/smeltz/fallon

12-gk
13-vicellich
14-oughton
15-scott
16-old
17-winstod  reid
18-brockie
19-bright
20-wood
21- fallon
22-smeltz/killen
23-mc glinchey

of the players that i saw  i  liked  bright  and  james  they  should be in midfield,  bright is  a strong fast  player that can play in an attacking midfielder  as  our  jonas gutierrez that  plays  for  Newcastle in england

for me it is a must  to  convinced  w reid,  i saw  him playing  in uefa cup and he can play in any position in the back  4 and as a holding midfielder, he can pass and  block  oposition

NZF don't seem to believe they have any chance of getting Winston to choose the All Whites over the Danish national team.

They also turned down an Argentina friendly a few months back.

nippy and fast, so big nippy and fast are even better, but speed for a counter attacking away leg style is prob the tatic for that match.

I'd go with for Legg 1

     Paston
(Sigmund/Vicelich/ Boyens)  (Sigmund/Vicelich/ Boyens)  Nelsen    Lochead
                            Elliot           Brown
James/ Brockie            McGlinchey         Bertos
                                 Smeltz

Don't know bout Brockie because we wanna try and play defensive this game. Sigmund could do well at RB just to out muscle them - but don't know.

Decided just Smeltz up front because we want to concede zero goals and I feel like Smeltz will offer us more potential as a single man rather than Killen/ Fallon.
He will still be a threat as he was for the nix playing up front on his own and nipping an away goal. Don't think Killen would be as effective tbh

Then at home you would see Killen and Smeltz up front instead of Brown I think. Or McGlinchey if he doesnt turn out too good

I think you'll find NZF aren't sure that Winston's head is in it, plus there would have been a massive paperwork trail trying to get him to swap nations for con freds cup and would probably not have cleared in time knowing how FIFA work.

Yeah thats probably correct. It's five years he has to play in NZ after the age of 18 according to FIFA. If Durante is still about and hasn't played for Australia 'A' international (I think that there are some others ahead of him) but still with the Phoenix then technically, if he likes, he can switch as well by that time.

I am surprised people have already put Mcglinchey into their starting spots, i am very happy that he is looking at coming to the All Whies, but has any one actually seen him play to actually justify his selection.

Lets see a few games frist then go from there.

For sure  the Bahrain/Saudi coaches would have been pouring over the tapes fro the Con Cup. What they would have seen was the way NZ was cut to pieces down the right side.....5 goals coming down that side. We need to shore that side up especially for the away leg.

We need to park Siggy at RB, he will do the job defensively there for us. Now that Vicilich has declared for us, him and Nelson must be favoutites for the Central defenders. With Lochead at LB we look solid across the back 4. Away we must pick a midfield that will run and tackle for the full 90 minutes

Away, it would be stupid to start with 2 strikers....you need to be conservative. Coming away with a 0-1 loss or even a 0-0 would be great.

NZ were accused of being niave in their selections and tactics in the Con Cup. You have to be cautious away.....everyone will expect us to " park the bus" . To play 2 strikers and push people forward and is just suicide. If we do it could all be over in the first leg.

We need to keep it tight, keep numbers behind the ball, rough them up a bit. If it is a close game then you can always nick a goal from a set piece with our tall guys. An away goal would be worth gold.

The home leg is a different story....we then know what we have to do and can sort out the tactics and selections to fit what required.

If we play one striker up front for the away leg who would it be?
I mean we might be in a situation where killen is getting first team football at celtic and knocking a few goals in this season, Rory Fallon knocking in goals in the Championship, Chris Wood knocking in goals in the championship....and Smeltz who for me was the onform striker for the all whites given his season at phoenix last year....but now...even if he is knocking in goals in the a-league...does that compare to SPL or Championship?

right now...I would be tempted to go with Rory. Would it be fair to say he is the quicker of woods and killen?

If we build it, they will come...

I would like to see Duncan Oughton given more of a chance in midfield instead of the likes of Tim Brown or Mulligan. He has a lot of experience at a good level (Columbus Crew in MLS for about 8 years, and All Whites caps) and is good both defensively and going forward to create chances. Simon Elliott remains an important player in midfield too.

IN USA ELLIOTT OUT OF FAVOUR BUT OUGHTON EARNING PRAISE
Elliott seems to have been apportioned some of the blame by his coach Frank Yallop (ex-Ipswich Town) when he last played for San Jose in a 0-2 loss to Chicago on 19 July- he gave the ball away rather softly near the goal-line from which Chicago scored a scond goal in injury time. He hasn't taken the field for San Jose since....

However, Duncan Oughton seems to have curried a lot of favour with his coach recently, after an impressive display out-of-position on the right wing. See full report:

Oughton Draws Praise on Right Wing

COLUMBUS -- It is possible to teach an old Columbus Crew new tricks.

For a veteran team that has been set in its ways successfully for the past 1-1/2 seasons, the need for change Saturday vs. Real Salt Lake was born out of desperation.

Injuries had robbed the Crew of their top two goal producers in Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Alejandro Moreno. A suspension sidelined assist leader Emmanuel Ekpo and defender Chad Marshall and Robbie Rogers were away with the U.S. national team, leaving the team lacking 17 of its 22 goals this season.

And one other thing: The Crew had scored three times in the previous four games.

Enter a wing man that would have made Tom Cruise proud in the movie "Top Gun" and the "Crash and Dash" attack that lifted Columbus to a 3-1 win for a record-tying 18th consecutive regular-season home game without a defeat.

That 32-year-old midfielder Duncan Oughton got the start for Ekpo -- his first since June 14, 2008 -- was not a huge surprise because coach Robert Warzycha only had 16 players available. Seeing the longest tenured Crew member running the right flank was.

Oughton has been used in the middle almost exclusively since joining the club in 2001 and said his last play on the wing was about six years ago.

The veteran looked at home. He controlled the tempo differently than either Rogers or Ekpo would have and defended well. He led the build up on the first goal and assisted on a classic third goal.

"There was a lot of one-touch passes on (Oughton's) side," Warzycha said. "That's how we broke the pressure. Duncan did very well."

Ekpo and Rogers provide speed down the flanks and a go-for-goal attitude that sometimes leads the team adrift defensively. Oughton and his counterpart on the left side, Eddie Gaven, kept the match at a manageable tempo.

"The old guy out there," forward Jason Garey said of Oughton. "He's just so smart and knows the game and was able to control the game a lot of times, slow it down when we needed to slow it down and speed it up when we needed to speed it up."

It was Oughton's through ball to overlapping defender Frankie Hejduk that led to the first goal. Hejduk sent a service into the box that was poorly cleared and forward Steven Lenhart took advantage for his first goal of the season.

"Playing with Frankie is amazing," Oughton said. "He's up and down. He covers you when you need covered. He talks to you and puts you in good spots. He's such a great player. He's an engine, that guy. He's ridiculous."

Said Warzycha: "There was a lot of understanding between him and Frankie and also between him and (central midfielders) Brian Carroll and (Danny) O'Rourke."

-- and the final was a quality effort. Garey had a give-and-go with Oughton before Lenhart received the ball while surrounded by three defenders. His one-touch went to an open Garey near the top of the box.

"The third goal was a thing of beauty," Oughton said. "It was a good combination and Jay finished it amazingly well."arzycha will have some decisions to make before the Crew hosts Toronto FC on Saturday. Ekpo will be available and Moreno (groin) could be although Schelotto (hamstring) is expected to sit again.

Will Oughton return to the bench and what about the Garey-Lenhart combo? The coach has a few days to decide.

"The tactic we chose for this game (RSL) paid off when we decided to go with two forwards," said Warzycha. "When we play against some different team maybe we go with a different formation

Our midfield is not strong, however we are beginning to produce some quality strikers. So i'd quite like to see us maybe play three up front and play quite direct. Wimbledon style if you like. It may not be pretty but it is our strength at the moment.

The other ooption is to play Elliott on Left mid, Bertos on the right and with James / Brown and McGlinchey in the middle of the park. Elliott did play on the left at fulham quite successfully by memory.

Agree that 3 up front may be the best option, but would require a very defensive midfield

                            Paston

                Nelsen            Vicelich
Siggy                                                  Lochhead

         Oughton       Brown          Elliot

        Bertos       Killen        Smeltz

Whatever way you look at it 2 of Wood, Killen, Smeltz and Fallon will miss out, which is a shame as they are all some of our best.

Team for the first leg will need a lot of experience, defensive organisation, and an ability to counterattack... it's going to be a hard atmosphere, we'll be under the pump, and will need cool heads... chances most likely will be at a premium too... therefore, for those practical reasons, this would be my first leg team/formation:

Bannatyne/Paston (toss of a coin really...)

             Oughton                      Sigmund         Nelsen                     Bouckenooghe

                                                  Vicelich          Elliott

                                Smeltz                James                  Bertos

Siggy    Nelson    Vicelich    Lochhead

                         James

Smeltz              Killen               Bertos

Paston in Goal by a long shot. The back four is the best we can trust and relied on. The two experience holding Midfielders in Oughton and Elliot that can provide attacking platform and some creativity in passing. Killen as the main centre forward. James, Smeltz and Bertos to provide fast attacks from whatever 3 field position by rotating them about. Quite simple and sound enough plan to pull off. I agree about having three up front as long as they are able to backtrack into the midfield from where they are. Strong Match fitness is very crucial in their game preparation. I am not sure about Brown on the field but Nelson is our captain.

sigmund, nelsen, boyens, lochhead

bertos, elliott, vicelich, mcglinchey (or james)

killen, smeltz

sigmund - we need a sitting right back.  all scott did against iran was sit in and defend the space in front of him.  he was super effective.  sigmund would perform the same role, but would be better at it

vicelich - lacks the zip, but good enough with the ball to be better than brown.  will shield the back four well and free elliott into a more creative role.  i have never understood why elliott plays as holder for nz.

mcglinchey has the inside running over james for being genuinely left sided (a rich man's nick roydhouse... ha ha just kidding).  also frees leo to play right side - he's good down the left and through the middle, but he's best out wide.

tactical options - this is quite an attacking lineup.  if we're under the cosh, smeltz can drop right and leo play in front of elliott and vicelich

fallon - would be useful, but killena nd smeltz are so hot right now
