I feel like the worst thing to do is to go over there and park the bus. You will just invite Mexico to attack for the whole game and this will mean their bound at score at least 3 goals. Gotta go over there and be cautious but positive. Play Marco, Kosta, Wood if they're all fit. The absolute worst thing to do is to have no attacking outlet and be unable to create any chances for a whole game. Marco is our x-factor and needs to play, but I feel like Herbert will play the most defensive lineup possible and will only play Marco in Wellington. I think Mexico's defence is good but not amazing and we need to try to exploit it. Otherwise the skillful technical Mexican midfielders and wingers will run circles around us.

Totally agree, and yes, Herbert will park the bus and play all the old guys. Mexico were patient in that first half against Panama, but after little success hitting high crosses into the box, they just went central getting their technicians involved just outside the front edge of the area, and created havoc. Frightening really. I've always felt we need to give the 4th placed getter something to worry about in the first leg, and get our best technicians in the lineup. It's amazing how the away goal can make even very good sides become quite apprehensive. But if they see us sit back, it'll be murder - 3 to 5 goals.

so it's mexico ... unless they lose at costa rica & panama beat usa (then we get panama)

or maybe honduras ... if they lose in jamaica & mexico win (then g/diff)

roll on next month ... at the stadium (with my ticket)

What has the first result got to do with the Mexican game? Playing at that altitude will be a massive challenge and unless players are acclimatised they will be stuffed by half time. That would take months to get used to.

Spot on mate, was thinking just that! the kid looks the goods, can't understand why he isn't involved  at the moment. by all accounts has been very impressive pre-season, surely Ricki speaks to club managers before making his selections, or does he just go with what he knows?

Yeah but seeing as he is eligible for Australia and South Africa too I wouldn't have been surprised to hear them refer to him as a great Aussie prospect or something

because Mexico haven't been able to put 2 past Trinidad & Tobago for a long time..

21.07.13 Mexico  1-0  Trinidad
15.10.09 Trinidad  2-2  Mexico
11.06.09 Mexico  2-1  Trinidad
13.10.05 Trinidad  2-1  México

16.07.2013 Honduras 0-2 Trinidad
07.09.2013 Mexico 1-2 Honduras
26.05.2012 Honduras 0-1 New Zealand

If we can do that I believe we have a chance..

No logic to that  and what about the altitude problem.

So this is the same Storm Roux who looked good at the U20 WC and the Nix only offered him a trial and Arnold at CCM snapped him up and he now has made a promising A-league debut. Meanwhile the Nix convert a winger to RB and sign the Sherminator as cover but who is so pants that he won't come in to replace the injured winger/convert.

Errr....not necessarily - even if Mexico lose at Costa Rica, they could remain ahead of Panama who would have to beat USA by a lot since their goal difference is -3 whilst Mexico's is -1...the points would be the same.

Check out the Mexican team's Facebook page for news (use Google Translate) and to post your comments. After all, lots of Mexicans are now posting on the All Whites page...

You never know what will happen on Tuesday. But I do think Mexico, Honduras and Panama will win but as you say GD will be the main thing. But IF Mexico finish 4th, I do feel that the OFC should make a case for an automatic spot.

Look at Australia three straight FIFA World Cups (They was robbed for a spot at 1970, 1986-2002 (Israel should of not played in the 1990 Final Round but that is FIFA for you)).

Huh? OFC need to qualify to have any case for direct entry because EXCO are not going to give a direct entry spot to a federation that can't qualify directly and has only done so 4 times in the last 40 years. Also considering our federation is essentially broke, even less so.

You've also yet to roll out next years friendly schedule with the thousand internationals against all the worlds top teams...

If it is Mexico anyone know how many away seats are allocated at the ROF?. Because I would imagine there would be lots of Mexicans who would come to Wellington. If 15,000 went to SA for the last WC then I would expect a big number would come here. Would be great atmosphere having a couple of thousand noisy Mexican fans there and after we kick their arses on the field we could shout them tequilas all night in Courtney place.

So it's looking highly likely we'll be playing Mexico.

Is it still too late to send out a SOS to Ryan Nelsen to come and coach the AWs, even at this late stage? Toronto is in off-season and he's put his hand up. Ricki Herbert's selection of Lochhead and Aaron Scott clearly shows he can't see beyond his stubborn preferences in the face of reality. He's even persisting with the notion of playing a fading Bertos at right back. He's not a back, he's a forward. Meanwhile a livewire and talented Storm Roux is good enough to shine for Central Coast Mariners at right back but still confined to NZ Under 20 (which means he could eventually play for Australia or South Africa at senior level). There is even talk of benching Rojas in Mexico for a packed defence.

Without Nelsen, Herbert is out of his depth at this level.

Never going to happen. After what happened with Tahiti at the confed cup, FIFA are never going to risk that at a World Cup. The entire football world would be up in arms.

Furthermore, that suggestion has got to be one of the most ludicrous posts i have ever read on here.

It basically reads as this: "Well we don't mind going through a playoff, but since the opposition this time round are actually half decent we feel that an automatic spot would be a far better alternative because lets face it, we don't really want to have to earn a spot at the World Cup."

Three for me, and two for them.

Given the good young players we have coming thru the ranks atm, we really should have a major focus on Russia 2018. The bulk of our squad will be at their peaks for that. Need NZ Football to get their stuff together, so we can build towards that.

The talk about not playing Rojas is just journalist hack speculation isn't it? Is there a quote from Ricki or anything suggesting that?

im quite open to the idea of rojas being on the bench in mexico. I think people underestimate what an advantage the home crowd will have on the mexicans. Park the bus, grind out a result and bring it back to wellington for a show down.

Rojas is one of the best attacking players this country has ever produced. To not play him in both legs is quite simply ridiculous. We will not have too many chances but Rojas is the kind of guy that can create something out of nothing and capabilities on these rare opportunities. Not playing Rojas is an extremely negative approach and when you play negative, you should expect a loss or a draw at best. Rojas needs to play, end of story. However, I have a very strong feeling that Ricki won't play him. This could hurt us BIG TIME.

Permalink Permalink

If Rojas doesnt play, the whole coaching staff and the board of NZF should be fired.
