One stupid mistake in gif form isn't enough to write off a player.

Is Fitzgerald still eligible to play for Japan? Is that something he wants to do? Or is he keen to play for NZ?

If he's sharp and playing in J1, then has to be our best wing back option at the moment. Roux has potential, Lochhead shouldn't be there as of right, but has a lot of experience and still has a lot to offer.

Or are we playing all the defensive players we can find? Has Boxall been called up? Because he should be. Would expect him to push Siggie or Dura out of starting sometime this season. Or if not to find himself in the midfield alongside Riera or Manny.

The thing I really like about this is that

A) their players haven't really done much long distance travel, whereas the europe based players are used to flying to a qualifier after a club game etc.. with little prep time and

B) these guys won't be used to wind/temp/horizontal rain that Wellington can turn on, on a regular occurance.. If we can get back home in the second leg with the game still acheivable then we have to be a decent chance I feel.

Some international football sites are saying the Mexican coach is being arrogant and patronising by leaving out his star players. The word out was that after watching NZ bumble their way through draws against humble USA club sides Chivas and Fortuna many Mexicans agreed that a Mexican club side could beat the AW's no problem.
The coach's reasoning is he did not think the Euro players would adapt quick enough to his playing style and their was too much travel for them. Considering they are all top level pro's it would be easy to call bollocks on that. Obviously there is all sorts of backroom politics going down. As Piney said who would not want to bring on a Hernandez or Dos Santos in a tight playoff game.
I really really hope we stick it up them....arrogant C**ts
As it has been pointed out it could all unravel for them. A bunch of club players....no matter how good will be under crushing home pressure for the first game. The longer the game goes on and its still close then the more likely they will fold to the pressure. Plus as has been pointed out they will now face a gruelling long flight to NZ, a different time zone and hopefully will have to train pre match and play in a cold wet stadium with a howling northerly gale. Most of them will have had zero experiance of these conditions.
I must admit that a small part of me is disappointed that we will not see the likes of Hernandez and dos Santos. Not every year do we get to see such an array of stars playing a serious match on NZ soil. Still a NZ victory will sooth any angst over that.

Not rocket science to work out what's needed against any Mexican side away from home. Herbert has to park the bus with the players he knows have done that for him in the past (so Bertos/Lockhead etc all play) and hope like hell we don't concede early. We'll also get 2 or 3 clear chances in the game, and also hope like hell, that we take one. Wood must be the one that plays up front.

I have no doubt that we can win from 1 or 2 goals down in the tie at Wellington, but equally have no doubt, that if we concede early in Mexico City, it'll be all over rover. Our only card at the Azteca is the home side's self doubts.

While I think many of the Club América players are not good enough for the NT, this notion that they're not used to "long flights" is a bit off thought. Most of them (even if just Liga MX players) have had Copa Libertadores (and some even CWC) experience, and the flights to Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and the South of Brazil are no joke, I agree the time diference is a bit of a problem. About the weather, Mexican clubs play often in the US (be it friendlies with their clubs or with the NT or in the CCL), so they have played in cold and windy weathers.

I still think Herrera is being an idiot not calling some of the European players and this is a pretty weak Mexican side, specially the defenders (Valenzuela is just horrible, then you add Rodriguez... ugh).

Three part plan ;)

1. Look like crap bunch of clueless hacks. The easy one. Check

2. Get Mexico to not bother about their o/s stars as their third string reserve side could rodger us. The lucky one. Check

3. " Then BOOM. "  . Playing out of our skins & a big dose of luck & the first goal & Mexico imploding

At least now we've doubled our chances, from 5% to 10%

Just need to take at least one of the very few chances we will get and two buses and a electric fence on defense.

Yesterday the All Whites’ World Cup opponents Mexico played Finland in their final hit-out before next month’s home and away playoff. Ricki Herbert – who was in the stands in San Diego – joins the BoC to give us his impressions of the new look Mexican side and to walk us through his process of selecting his squad for the two games.

Just look at how bad we were against UAE. Mexico are a possession based side, able to keep the ball and more attack minded. We are massive massive underdogs despite their problems.

This

Initially I was quite excited about the whole playoff thing and like many got caught up in the hype about NZ's chances. However I must admit I am not as up beat as I was. Having recently watched lots of clips of Mexico in action I agree we are massive underdogs. OK so they are out of form.....but form is relative. Even out of form they are quality. Technically they are light years ahead of us....in every area. Sure we might be able to park the bus and keep the score down but to win qualification we will need to score. I don't think we can keep them scoreless over 180 minutes. Plus we have massive problems with injuries to our most creative players. Killen is gone, Rojas, Smeltz are just starting to come back in from long term injuries.

But what people are really forgetting is just how poor NZ has been in the last 18 months. We got carved up by New Caledonia in Dunedin, we couldn't beat US club sides in our warmup games. We will need a miracle to qualify.....I just hope we can hold the score down in Mexico so there is some hope back in Wellington. I would pick 0-3 away and 0-2 at home

However football has provided plenty of examples of massive upsets....if we battle it out, if Mexico lose their Mojo, if we have a lot of luck then there is still a sliver of hope.....bring it on!!!!

Did you see Mexico vs. what was in effect a Finland "B" team of Finnish league players only?
Mexico's defence were pretty crap in what was in effect a home game (Mexico plays more games in the US then it does in Mexico for financial gain) in front of 24,000 Mexican fans.
I grant Mexico are better technically than us in attack, as you would expect from any Mexico national team. But don't forget that any clips you have may have seen prior to the Finland game are pretty irrelevant, since they now have a lot of new players from Club America, a new coach, a new formation and tactics...
And vulnerability is also shown by the fact Club America, who now contribute ten players to Mexico, lost  12 days ago in the Azteca to Costa Rican club Alajuelense in the CONCACAF Champions League, eliminating them from the competition (they also lost  away in Costa Rica in August). IF ALAJUELENSE CAN DO IT, THEN WE CAN DO IT !!!!
Highlights  Alajuelense v Club America home and away victories:

Video highlights of Mexico v Finland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK2CMAChFPo

Mexico v Finland match report:

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/oct/30/soccer-mexico-qualcomm-stadium-finland/

"Mexico appeared to shake its recent offensive woes after scoring seven goals in 10 World Cup qualifiers. But Peralta’s goal came on a deflection, and the amount of genuine scoring chances generated by Mexico was not proportionate to its overwhelming amount of possession.

Of deeper concern is the defense, which was supposed to be the strength of Herrera’s controversial plan to include 10 players from the Club America team he has coached the past two years. The logic, he explained, was that he prefers a 5-3-2 formation not used by recent national coaches and his America players would make a more seamless transition than an all-star team thrown together a few days earlier.

Except the defense looked shaky against the No. 63 team in the FIFA world rankings (16 spots higher than New Zealand). A minute after Pena had made it 2-0, Mexico failed to clear a free kick and Jarkko Hurme – wide open at the top of the penalty area – drilled a shot past goalkeeper Moises Munoz.

Peralta made it 3-1 early in the second half, only for the Finns to strike nine minutes later on another defensive gaff. Marquez was stripped of the ball at the left sideline, allowing Mikael Forssell to send in a low cross that Juan Carlos Valenzuela inadvertently knocked into his own net.

Two other Finland shots sailed just wide of the post, each greeted by boos and whistles.

A victory, yes.

Convincing, no."
