Both players on separate continents having a virus at the same time? On 4-4-2, the bastion of good credible football news? Like Winstons thing, I'll wait to read it from a real source.

I heard a rumour that Moss has a swollen penis and testicles. He's unlikely to make it to both games. Just a rumour at this stage though.

You've obviously never been to Mexico City. The high altitude is energy sapping. Anyone taking the field must be match fit or they're a liability. Lochhead will be a liability, experience or not. At least Ivan can probably do 60 minutes. I would then go for Tuiloma for that frantic last 30 minutes.

We also have to attack. Without Reid there is no option, we simply can't try and park the bus. I'd throw two strikers up front and pump balls to them. That's why the fast Roux would be good as a wing back. We won't be able to pass our way through midfield. I'd certainly play Rojas if he's fit and behind the strikers. We can't allow them lots of time and space to launch attacks. Pin them back, make them worry about committing too many going forward. An away goal or two will be priceless. Three - one and it's still alive for Wellington. Three - nil and it's tie over. Then in Wellington we have to throw everything at them and hope it's blowing a cold gale.

I have never been to Mexico City

I understand they plan to fly in the day before so that they are not killing everyone training at altitude. I can't comment if that's the best move or not but you can bet they will get a massive shock 20 mins in.

Lochhead is one of the fittest about. He may not have match fitness but he will run all day for us. I think that much has never been questioned about him

I would ask Ivan to give the full 90. Milk it out of him there and if he needs to replaced by 'lessor' footballers at home, its easier than chucking them in against it at Azteca. Again, his experience and calming influence can not be replicated by anyone else.

I think there is merit to the route 1 football you talk about. I agree that football through the midfield will not work for us. At least if the ball is in the air, we can't lose possession and I'd rather it be in the air at their end of the pitch than on the deck at ours. I just hope to god we don't play a high line of defence.

JV, it does not matter how fit you are. Playing at altitude there is a lot less oxygen. I lived and played in Johannesburg for three years, and that is only 1750 metres above sea level. Mexico City is 2240 metres. It took me 3 months to acclimatise. A 3 min boiled egg in Auckland take 5 mins in Joburg.
I trained for 4 days after I arrived and played on the Saturday. I had to lie down at half time. I could not breathe and had black spots in my eyes.Unless you have experienced it, it is very hard to comprehend.

The New Zealand players need at least a week to get used to the high altitude at Mexico City. So what does inept NZF do, have them arrive two days before the first playoff. The players will struggle to get through 60 minutes, let alone 90. That's why Roux and Tuiloma must be thrown in at the deep end.

We really need an ignore poster setting. It has been explained why they do not arrive in Mexico straight away.

I have a suggestion in the absence of Reid. Lets not park the bus but go for broke in attack.

Bypass midfield and play a long ball attacking game. Throw five on attack and leave McGlinchy to be the linkman between defence and attack and then play four at the back (Smith, Durante, Vicelich, Roux). This would force Mexico to hold players back to counter our attack as we know their defence is their weakest link and this would limit their attack. We're going to lose the midfield battle anyway so lets give them midfield and pump long balls forward. With Wood, Brockie and Fallon up front and Barbarouses and Rojas out wide there's a real chance we could score one or two. Then if we concede four or five we're still in with a chance in Wellington.

But you know Ricki, he's going to play one attacker and pack players behind the ball. Lochhead and Bertos will be beaten with ease, Ivan will run out of steam, Dura is too slow and Smith will be overwhelmed as the sole up to standard defender. If Sigmund comes on he'll blow a fuse in the pressure. Remember Australia recently got thumped 6-0 by both France and Brazil. I fear that sort of humiliation.

But if we threw caution to the wind it might be 6-3, now that would be something!

I kind of agree with the attacking philosophy. Under Craig Levin, Scotland employed the most defensive tactics I've ever seen including a 6-4-0 formation against the Czech Rep. or some such. They lost that particular game 1-0. Now under Gordon Strachan and playing more attacking football they have recently beaten Croatia both home and away and had a 3-2 loss to England at Wembley...

Hopefully none of the All Whites playing on Saturday in the A-League get injured. Surely the Reid situation has made people realise what a dangerous situation it is to play 6 AW.

Anyone else see on last night's TV1 news Brockie berating (Cunningham?) for going in hard at training yesterday?

True and true. You need about 2 weeks to adjust, and yeah the players aren't released early enough for that to happen. The best way is to get in and out as quick as you can. 4,3 or 2 days before isn't going to make a difference.

Would like to see us play 4 at the back at least, maybe a 4-2-3-1. By all accounts Mexico's defence looked shaky against a 2nd string Finnish side and without Reid our attackers are actually our strength so we should play to it. I really doubt Ricki will deviate from his 3 at the back though

Jamaica and USA used a 4-4-1-1 formation with a speed team, at least from the midfielders, tried to move the ball around from right to left and overlapping to avoid the pressure,  without reid is the best formation.,  Mexico is playing with the advantage of a team that knows each other they are no world beaters, they are average , ad some defenders are 33 and 35 old like el maza rodriguez and rafa ,  the best way to work is to play the more wellington phoenix players available for team cohesion and chemistry, because is hard to get an understanding when you just met your team mate, specially at the back, dont see the youngsters there , like a baptism of fire

Sigmund is faster than Lochead. Clapham may be marginally fast than Vicellich, but not by much. Bertos is far from the slowest of the bunch, would be one of the quickest (more or less by default). Smeltz is slow.

YES, but thats up to the tactic , if you wait dont need pace but positioning and grit,  that's up to herbert's tactics any way, if you go  for it, you need pace to cover up their fast forward counters,  this Mexico team is there for the taking because they are not sure about it and the public is against them and BIG RICH MONEY FROM TELEVISA AND FRIENDS,  they just defeated a local based Finlandia with players taking their firsts caps 4-2, but the main issue here is the altitude, and the mexicans will try to take advantage of that, so how do you cope with it, since this team is use to the altitude, just wait and play your fastest, MORE MOBILE  and more experienced team, and play , the first half you wait, and made it hard to break and play a mind game with the tiem clicking , second half you can bring young legs with kosta and rojas,  i would like to see  3-4-3 kosta, brockie and wood up front but could be too risky...because of their 2000 mts
