The right hand side has zero pace.

YES, but thats up to the tactic , if you wait dont need pace but positioning and grit,  that's up to herbert's tactics any way, if you go  for it, you need pace to cover up their fast forward counters,  this Mexico team is there for the taking because they are not sure about it and the public is against them and BIG RICH MONEY FROM TELEVISA AND FRIENDS,  they just defeated a local based Finlandia with players taking their firsts caps 4-2, but the main issue here is the altitude, and the mexicans will try to take advantage of that, so how do you cope with it, since this team is use to the altitude, just wait and play your fastest, MORE MOBILE  and more experienced team, and play , the first half you wait, and made it hard to break and play a mind game with the tiem clicking , second half you can bring young legs with kosta and rojas,  i would like to see  3-4-3 kosta, brockie and wood up front but could be too risky...because of their 2000 mts

I agree, this under-fire Mexico team is there for the taking but only if we attack. Let them get confidence by the AWs just sitting back in defence and they will eventually tear us apart. I'd much rather Roux than Lochhead, he has shown enough composure and ability for CCM to warrant it and he's fast. Bertos is no good in defence because he's not a good tackler. Love the idea of three attackers as their back line is shakey.

But this is Ricki Herbert we're talking about - we'll have a lone frontman and try and park the bus. It's not going to be pretty.

i think he is not taking one for the 1st leg, with vicellich and sigmund as replacements, but then there you have an 18 years old youngster purchased  by the most popular team in la France, but still a kid,  should be between Boxall and Fitzgerald, or a different type of player with Howieson, i always knew  there was no room for both,  it was between rojas and howieson in the squad, both very similar only rojas 4 years older, and  deserves the spot injury free.

The mexican team is very slow at the back   "sledgehammer" rodriguez is very tall and slow and rafa marquez is a butcher , like terry butcher, some name there for a defender anyway!

Aaron Scott thing was a piss take. Can't see Ricki bringing in a RB.
Obviously we all want Fitzgerald but who knows whats going on there.
Boxall is obvious 2nd choice and that's probably about it unless you call in someone from midfield to replace Ivan who thus becomes defensive cover?

BREAKING NEWS: Tommy Smith out too

Aaron Scott to slot into defensive roll for All Whites vs Mexico

Auckland City defender Aaron Scott is likely to lead the All Whites in the World Cup football playoff series against Mexico in place of the injured defensive duo of Winston Reid and Tommy Smith

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert told Fairfax Media that he spoke to an "incredibly disappointed" Reid yesterday, and Smith this morning, and the centre back could be out for "six to 10 weeks", the latter for "4 weeks or so"

Herbert said Ivan Vicelich or Marco Rojas would now take over as captain.

"Aaron has recently been involved in that position and we would like him to step up at this stage," he said. "He was incredibly disappointed to miss out on the last World Cup after being heavily involved in qualifying, and I made a gentlemen's agreement with him this time around ensuring that should we suffer losses through injuries, he would be involved in some capacity or another".

Herbert went on to elaborate "Sometimes you just need to go with whats worked in the passed [sic], as opposed to what may or may not work in the future. In this case the future holds Mexico, who are very good. Aaron has done well domestically this year and hes ready to step up."

When Stuff went on to confirm rumors of explicit images being sent to players mothers, and whether or not this was the true reason behind Reid and Smith not being involved, Herbert was immediately whisked away by Red Badge security. This comes as unfortunate timing for Herbert, in the wake of the Roast Busters sex scandal.

Pace is irrelevant for us at altitude. Even if we had it we would blow our lungs trying to use it. If we are going to attack the only way is to play the long ball and spare the midfield. They will need every breath just on defensive duties.
By the second half you can expect to see us sitting back simply because there's no other choice - the lungs and legs will be gone.
A key part of our overall game plan has to be for every player to run the shortest total distance possible and run as few sprints as possible. Obviously a lot of the running they have to do will be in defence, which greatly limits our attacking options.
From what we know of this Mexican defence the long-ball probably isn't a bad option anyway. They will mop up plenty but there's always the chance Wood or Fallon will manage to turn (or clatter) their marker and get a shot away.

hi i'm from mexico , this game is going to be exiting for both teams , in theory this game has to be easy for mexico , but NZ in his last world cup doesn´t lost any game , Mexico is not callling great players like dosantos(villareal) ,   aquino(vilareal)   chicharito(Manchester U) ,      carlos vela(real sociedad) , guardado(valencia) , Hector moreno (español) but Mexico's team have exellent player that play's in the local league .

these are the players, that are going to play versus New Zeland

striker's

oribe peralta http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAljvBwXsXI  (peralta is better than chicharito)

raul jimenez  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfdvg5PAhSk

and the real power of mexico , the aztec stadium

OK, had me fooled after only reading the first couple of sentences - but then read on & found the link was a false one...
Things are getting pretty surreal with the AW's though back in the real world - though not on the epic scale of for example Scotland World Cup '78.
Sheet! You had me almost sinking into outright despair by suggesting Smith was injured too!
Naughty!
We need a bit of humour. Mexican media and fans have been having a field day with their team in recent months of course.
So, it's really one major Mexican train wreck up to now (by their standards) vs. the little handicapped guy in the class trying to fight the big toughs after just having another leg amputated this week (us).
In other words, Thursday am in the Azteca will be fascinating and wouldn't want to miss a second!!!
Here's a recent Mexican TV cartoon "The Tritanic" -  Mexican "El Tri" team steer into various obcstacles, wrecking their ship and leaving everyone floundering in the sea, until  a dirty big US ship passes and washes them ashore in NZ:

Mexico DF is around 2000 mts,  we played in Quito, Ecuador last June or July drew 1-1.   This may be useful for the fans of NZ nat team, because you can have a dimension of what is to play at altitude, even though in SOUTHAFRICA most games were at altitude, dont know hot the all blacks and other rugby teams prepare to play at altitude.   In football you are correct, you have to use your energy in a sensible way,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dWBw5FWnL4  link to first half of ecuador 1-argentina 1, at altitude  argentina 5-3-2

We parked the bus but we didnt quit the idea of speedy counterattacks with pace and direct play, and we played 5-3-2 against them, 3 tall a bit slow center backs, a young speedy right back with pace,  20 years old Gino Peruzzi, as for the left back Marcos Rouge,  3 central midfielders banega, mascherano and di maria  and aguero and palacio up front,(messi was recovering from an injury and played last half an hour for aguero) ,  The tactic if you watch it was simple, long passes to the empty spaces for palacio and aguero to run free,  supported by the skinny , speedy  Di Maria and 7 men behind the ball,  Ecuador players are stronger than the mexicans they are like an African team playing at altitude, tall, speedy, physical, and  powerful , they are really athletes like Usain Bolt.  The ball has different rebounds because of the air is not so heavy at altitude,  it is really hard to bend it  like beckham to take the curve, while shooting, and any simple shoot is stronger at altitude.

If you take a look , we went for it, we tried to cope with the altitude,  we got a penalty and then we tried to slow down the tempo, hold on the pressure and we didnt play it nicely  at some dangerous places, we put  aguero and palacio to run around from left to right to complicate the back 4, and the passes were at empty spaces at the backs of their  right back and left back that made their 2 center back to cover it ,  so we tried to put our forward in a situation of one on one with the last defenders.

Butler joins All Whites squad

Waitakere United midfielder Jake Butler was added to the All Whites squad on Friday ahead of the New Zealand side’s FIFA World CupTM intercontinental playoff with Mexico beginning next week.

Butler replaces the injured All Whites skipper Winston Reid in the squad after the West Ham United defender was ruled out of the playoff after damaging his ankle in club training.

The 28-year-old Butler earned the second of his two international caps in the All Whites’ last competitive outing against Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain in October.

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert says Butler’s inclusion is just reward for the midfielder who was set to lead Waitakere United in the club’s ASB Premiership opener against Southern United on Sunday.

“Jake has worked very hard to earn a place in the All Whites squad and he now gets an opportunity to impress in the lead up to the first leg,” Herbert said.

“He joins a group of players who are excited about the chance they have to make their mark internationally in the coming days.”

The opening leg of the playoff tie kicks off at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday 14 November at 9.30am (NZ time).

A number of people talk up the lack of foreign-based players in the Mexico team selected. I only have two points to offer to this:

1) Mexican foreign based players are crap this time around and nearly cost them the WC entry so far; their local league team is well-drilled, cohesive and coached by the current national team coach;

2) their local players have neither the jet-lag nor the altitude acclimatisation issues, which would be a problem for their foreign contingent.

I expect the plan for them is to win handsomely in Mexico City, due to the factor in point 2) if nothing else.

Then they simply have to park the bus and not lose in Wellington. They will be jetlagged, but only as much as the All Whites.

This is the lesson that was learned from the first time Australia (under Frank Farina) played off against Uruguay in 2002 and failed to go to the finals, after Uruguay selected a domestic team at home and overcame the first leg disadvantage. Lessons learned by Australia were put to a very good use four years later, when the Socceroos qualified to the 2006 WC at the expense of the same Old Enemy.   You could argue that to win this battle Herbert should select quite a few guys to play the second leg; people who do not go to Mexico.

Maybe this is why we see no Boxall or Keat on the park. But maybe I overestimate Ricki.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days
