"City were hoping that the NZF would allow Wood to travel after the clash with Forest at the King Power Stadium, but the All Whites will not compromise.

City boss Nigel Pearson said it was disappointing for Wood and City, but stressed he understood New Zealand's tough stance.

"Unless New Zealand's Federation alters its stance, I think it is probable that we won't have him available," said Pearson.

"It was possible only if the chartered flight was available and we are not in a position to do that.

"The scheduled flights don't allow us to get him there in the time-frame.

"It is unfortunate because he has just forced his way back into the side and scored a goal. The player is really disappointed."

I'm pretty sure he's not disappointed at all. What a ridiculous thing for a club coach to come out with.

where will the temporary seating be in westpac stadium? Right around the whole thing?

I don't think there was any behind the goals last time, just on the sidelines around halfway. There's a good panoramic photo of the stadium last time which should give you an idea if you google for it

Can't find it. Hows the view going to be from row NN now?

To be honest TV, they probably don't even give a shite as they both have professional careers. It's not like they need to try and find a club, although it's always good to get on the world stage.

All I can say is there are four Major League Soccer teams into the next round of ten and Arabe Unido (no, I'd never heard of them either) - but Club America weren't good enough to make it.

There are 3 MLS clubs, in the next round of eight.
I also think Club América is a shit team with shit players, but a Club América + Club León midfielders and Oribe Peralta, is a totally different beast.

this

I think everyone is hoping for a miracle. That the pressure gets to Mexico and they seriously choke. Reality is that with the coach and players we have we have little hope over 180 minutes and it could get seriously embarrassing. I just hope it stays close so that the media can say they did us proud considering all the obstacles and afterwards we can get on with the A-league.

High-scoring draw would be jolly good. Keystone cops stuff. Bring it on.

On a positive note NZF have sold the TV rights to the home leg playoff for a couple of million dollars so at least we'll come out of the whole debacle with a few extra millions in the bank.

Which is about a couple of million more than selling the TV rights to AW games against new Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tahiti in Oceania. We really need to get into the Asian WC playoffs. Home matches vs Japan, Korea, Oz etc = TV money.

If Smith picks up a yellow he is out of second game. Ricki's failure to provide CB cover is almost criminal.

Latest report is NZF will trouser $5 million for the home playoff and selling international TV rights, so that's it then. Frank and co will be happy with the lolly and Ricki can play Christie, Lochhead and Butler and it doesn't matter. Forgetting that our international reputation could be shredded by lop-sided scores, the fact we ended up playing Mexico has turned into a cash cow anyway, regardless of the result.

The pity is Mexico is in disarray and are there for the taking. If only we had incisive experienced leadership. Oh well, it brings back memories of those days when the AWs expected to be thumped and it was just a matter of keeping the score down.

Also nice to know a bumbling Oceania served us a curveball by handing the yellow-card clearance to Samoa, rather than holding it for the All Whites. Now a number of AW's go to the Azteca knowing a yellow card means they're not running out at Westpac. If you're cynical you'd think Oceania doesn't like NZ dominating its profile but then that would hint of racism, wouldn't it?

It might hint at political interests rather than racism.  I think your post suggests how racist you are.

I had the 'privilege' of being involved with OFC 10 years ago. You have no idea of the politics involved and how every dog protects their own kennel.

I can tell you with certainty, there is a reason OFC get no leg up from other confeds and that's because of the politics involved in running ours. When it comes to voting lines, there is a very definite trend. There is a reason Australia got out and left NZ to it and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why. That's nothing to do with opinion, that's fact.

In this case I can tell you it's a political decision on wiping the cards having spoken with the men who made that decision.

I keep having this reoccurring dream that Mexico win 4-0. God, I hope I am wrong.

Ricki could always continue his usual defensive mode and play this new formation: 1-9-1. We defend 99% of the time, try and score on a break then defend to the hilt.

105,000 Mexicans wont love us.

Then one has to consider if any of the Cartels have got any money riding on the result. This could get ugly or I could be just talking bollox.

Perhaps I'm just talking bollox as per normal.

If cartels had money on this game it would be on us. Nobodies going to put $1m on Mexico winning only for it to pay a relative pittance. And nobody will take that either. NZ on the other hand, well ...

A number of people talk up the lack of foreign-based players in the Mexico team selected. I only have two points to offer to this:

1) Mexican foreign based players are crap this time around and nearly cost them the WC entry so far; their local league team is well-drilled, cohesive and coached by the current national team coach;

Except their "local league team" Club America which provide ten players to El Tri have also been crap recently - they lost at the Azteca to Costa Rican club Alajuelense (yes, "who?") last month which eliminated them at the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

There has been some discussion in Mexico and the US that Club America lost on purpose, because they are eligible to participate in the  Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League) and the Copa rules state that no team can participate in both the Libertadores and CCL in the same season.  It does appear now though that the rules were misinterpreted by the masses at least and that Club America will not be able to participate in the Libertadores next season anyways.  Just some food for thought.
