Can anyone tell me the last time Rugby won a Halberg?

Im pretty sure it would have been 96 when they won the series in South Africa. Jonah may have won a sportsman title since then but I couldn't tell you that exactly. So give up on the it only goes to Rugby BS will ya.

Try 2006.  AB team of the year.  Ted coach of the year.

I would question whether free diving is a sport.  You don't really compete against each other. i.e. I'm pretty sure there are 10 divers out in the ocean and each of them take turns divign down.  Instead there is a world record that divers have a go at at their leisure.  To me that soulds like something that should be in the Guinness world records.

But by that defanition sports also wouldn't consist of shop put, long jump, high jump, all gymastic routines

Trubridge's latest record dive took place during the Vertical Blue Sunnto Dive-Off competition which runs from April 17 - 27 and sees the best freedivers in the world compete to extend the limits in this extreme sport - which is pretty much the same way an athletics meet or olympics is run. Free diving is at such depths these days and so expensive as far as setup and safety costs that its not done at anyone's leisure
ops i had a typo in my prvious post.  Meant to say I'm pretty sure there aren't 10 divers sitting out in the ocean.  Hence my differentiation between diving, and say shot put etc  wasn't very clear.

Happy to stand corrected SK.  Didn't realise they had meets.  From what I gathered from TV was that a diver would have a crack at the world record whenever they felt like it.  Obviously I'm a dumbarse.

So Rugby wins one Halberg in the past 10 years and it always goes to Rugby?

If the All Whites dont win every halberg going this year I will have as bigger cry as the rest of you, as I did this year. Sometimes Rugby bashing comes a bit to easy and unjustified by many of you.

Not a dumbarse... I thought the same until the last few years. The big blue is one of my fave movies and still think it's way more romantic to think of a solo diver pushing his limits but like anything fairly dangerous these days its way more regimented & safety orientated and I'm guessing that like any athletes the divers like the chance to meet up and actually see how each other is doing & having an offical body ensures the veracity of the record. And as far as the Halbergs go I just read somewhere else that this was Trubridge's tenth world record

The fact it isn't a world wide highly participated sport does not matter one bit. It is NZs national sport, whether it will be in 10 years is another question, but at the moment it is NZs biggest sport.
Thats why it gets media attention.

umm... why is it NZ's national sport? this is an actual question rather than sarcasm (tho I also have that in spades re rugby) but what deterimes a countries national sport? particpants? cause I read somewhere last year that in NZ more people surf than play rugby and i'd believe that and I'm sure there are also more people who play pool

i have also wondered about this "national sport" label. Why do we need to have one at all?

CGW was on fire last night. Richardson (who is on the Halberg panel) said that he'd lock in right now the AW's for team of the year, Ricki for coach of the year, but was a little more effusive about Nelsen as sportsman of the year.

Heard somewhere Mark Sorenson said he wouldn't be voting for the All Whites cause we didn't actually win anything at the WC

Mark Richardson, a Halbergs judge, has already come out on his "Crowd Goes Wild" show on TV and stated the All Whites will definitely have his vote for  Best Team and Ricki for Best Coach, whatever happens before the end of the year re Commonwelath Games etc.

Have enjoyed his daily "CGW" TV show during the World Cup- Richardson and his co-presenter are real AWs fans...  they had a lot of cool AWs fan stuff on the show and entertaining segments from James McOnie in SA. Completely positive coverage of Kiwi soccer for several weeks- a refreshing change...

Marky and co are just passionate about anything sport, and manage to look at each sport individually rather than comparing.

It is a very entertaining show, Mulligan is brilliant and Richardson plays well off him too, McConie is great, his clips are always hilarious, one of my fav shows, always MySky it and watch at some stage during the evening...

Even Hayley Holt has got better...

Who plays softball worldwide? It's like the poncy version of baseball, which isn't very global either.

I think football fans should avoid slagging other sports, we all hate the old stereotypes of football in this country and of football in general. We should show other sports some respect, we don't need to belittle other sports to make football look better.

Sorensons arguement in my opinion is flawed. I don't think he grasps the scale of Football worldwide. Being ranked 22nd at the World Cup is a massive achievement and in my opinion is a greater than winning medals that only a compartively small number of athlete's are competing for.

To add a little perspective accoding to FIFA in 2006 there were 265,000,000 footballers of which 110,000 were professional. According to the International Rugby Board there were 3 million rugby players worldwide in 2008.

The old cup is half full response from him. We can counter that with "We didn't lose anything either, not even a 1/4 final"
