I was watching the news tonight and heard that NZ football were thinking about organising a 3-match series against Australia at the end of the A-League and make it a regular fixture.

That would be mint. A bit like the tri-nations league matchs?

I suppose if it happened it would only involve players from the A-league. Would a pretty good end to the season, although we'd probably struggle.

If it only involved players from the A-league then we'd not have enough for a full team.

It would be way better if it was Australia's best versus NZ's best.

Apparently, it is actually going to be a quadrangular series involving Brazil and the 1966 England World Cup winning side

Chuck the South Africansinto the mix and have a Football Tri series I say!  This was mooted some time ago but never got off the ground.

Now you're talking.  A Southern Hemishphere Tri-series of footie. SA, Oz, NZ.
Not feeling generous enought to add Argentina.
What about a Southern Hemisphere Games, with Brazil to get the crowds, Chile, Argentina, Oz, NZ, SA and maybe somewhere like Angola.

I think alot of players would get released from other leagues with perhaps the exception of Ryan Nelson and a few others.wellyphoenixfan2007-09-11 16:08:37

No one would be up for it except nz and mabe angola. Or they might all be up for it and decide to include us.

A tri series with Aus and Sth africa would be mint. But we dont want to be seen to be ripping off Rugby ideas.

Who cares what Rugby thinks we are doing. League has a tri-nations aswell.

Rugby copied the Football World Cup, but its not as good a fit for Rugby because there aren't enough rugby playing nations to add depth to their competition! Only gets interesting at Semi Final time!  So why can't we copy the tri nations concept????

Overseas clubs would not release their players for what would essentially be friendly games, especially if they're not scheduled in the FIFA window. So that would pretty much only leave the A-league and NZFC players for us.

Simon Elloit and players like him I would think would get released as their teams do not need them.

But they also pay them. The clubs are also reluctant to release players they don't really need because of the potential they may sustain an injury and become even more of a deadweight. They also may need them if the situation in the club changes through injury, suspensions, etc, so that serves as another disincentive for the clubs to release the players unless they really have to.

El grapadura good point. Maybe they could do the series after the EPL because I think that the A-league isn't on at that time. However they it would be fair if they did it straight after because some of Australias best players play overseas aswell as ours but it would make it more even I would think.

Hes not going to be injured to the end of the A-League and I didn't mean him directly just meaning players who don't play regularly.

Don't mean to be a kill joy but we used to have a series against the Aussies but this was dropped and for those with a bit of memory, every couple of years, NZ Football raises the idea but nothing comes of it.  They talked about it in the 90s, the early 00s and even the game in 05 was supposed to be the start of it.

They did a shoddy job of it then seeing that the game was played in England! Hows that supposed to get more Kiwi's behind the team?

Nah. dont think it would happen. FFA (f**king football in Australia) would know who to organise it and would f**k it up anyway.
