It's a bit of a worry when football fans seem to focus on the sexiness of 15 & 16 year olds  instead of the football. I do hope there are no adults entertaining such thoughts. Could this be the real reason why some want the fever zone to be over-18s only? Do we need a Michael Jackson zone!

Let's face it, football is a bit of a sausage fest.

Lets focus on what the issue is here. New Zealand is hosting a WORLD tournament, the first time that there has been a U17 Women's world tournament and we get it. Keep the "comments" about players out of it and focus on what is happening here. The more people that come and watch, the better. After all, 150 coutries are broadcasting the game around the world and it is our chance to be seen. Come and support the ladies. They are great at thegame and you might learn something.

We seem to be ready.. but it was very confusing sitting at the back of the qe2 room listening to the lady speak about where we get car parking and all this other BS.

A couple of them have full NZ caps.  I'm sure JR will be a long soon to tell us who.

That's impressive. I think one of the strikers has a very good rep, but don't know her name.

Just brought tickets to the 8 Christchurch games.  I can definitely make four, and if I get time off work on Saturday I can see 6 (parent's won't let me off the games during school time - think they 'know best').

Can't wait.

Evening all,

Per DRX's request:
Caitlin Campbell - 2 caps, and you can check out her profile on www.sportswebsoccer.com
Annalie Longo - 15 caps, NZ's youngest-ever Football Ferns international, and the second-youngest player in history to play in the FIFA Women's World Cup Finals.

Cheers,

Realistically, do you guys (and girls) think we have much of a chance?  I reckon we could beat Canada, but Colombia and Denmark could eventually prove too tough.
Permalink Permalink

I thought Canadian's women's football was very strong?

I'd probably say Colombia would be the best chance, doubt they invest much in girls' and women's soccer. Unless a daughter of one of the drug lords is playing on the team?

Columbia, old bean, qualified as South American champions ...

Canada finished third in CONCACAF, as did the Danes in Europe, after losing just 1-0 to Germany in the semis.

Coach Paul Temple and captain Briony Fisher talk up their chances of finishing in the top two in their group among traditionally strong nations Canada and Denmark, plus South American champions Colombia, a result which would create history for football in this country.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I wonder how much that actually means? I mean, in senior women's football, other than Brazil, most other teams are pretty average to say the least. So on that basis, I was guessing that their age-grade sides wouldn't be spectacular either, but of course I could be completely wrong...

I'd expect Danes to be very tough, and I thought Canada would be better? Finishing behind USA in CONCACAF is to be expected, but who else did they finish behind?

EDIT: Looks like Costa Rica. That surprises me a bit.el grapadura2008-10-20 09:52:38

No Feverish, it's not just you.

It is the one position in the women's game in this country where there is a dearth of genuine quality.

That this is so is evidenced in today's U20 WWC squad announcement, where two of the requisite goalkeeping trio are U17 squad members, and one of that pair started out the U17s' campaign last year as a defender - she's changed her position, and is now looking at being involved in two WWC campaigns in as many months! Do you think Victoria Esson will ever regret that move? Not on your life!!

In fairness, goalkeeper is not a position which girls are generally encouraged to take up. For someone in a gender which is, in general, very conscious of their appearance, particularly at that age, it takes a special character to want to put self-interest aside and don the gloves, then take the risk of diving at an opponent's feet.

At the top level, Jenny Bindon is far and away the country's best, while Rachel Howard and, for mine, JB's long-term successor in the #1 jersey, Stephanie Puckrin, are next in the rankings. Pam Yates would be fourth best at best, while the 2006 U20s' 'keeper, Aroon Clansey, is the pick of the rest.

Ingrid Bain is a 'keeper who, for mine, deserved more opportunities to step up to national level than were afforded her during her prime, while one up-and-comer with the potential to be the best of them all is Bianca Mori - injuries and, in particular, a lack of self-discipline are and will always be her biggest opponents to realising that potential.

She is her own worst enemy, that lass, believe me, but if she ever gets herself sorted out and focused on her football ...

There endeth the lesson on the state of NZ women's goalkeeping in 2008. If you come across any good young goalkeeping prospects at your club, or at a match you happen to be watching, please alert your federation coaching staff to their potential, because it really is the one area of the women's game in this country where we are thin on the ground, and lacking in depth.

If you're looking at female goalkeepers abroad, the best in the business are Germany's Nadine Angerer and the USA's Hope Solo - that chick is the total package, no question. Featured here:

I dont know if its been covered before but since the womens game in all age groups has progressed very well in New Zealand within the last 4 years, Would a Phoenix W-League team be a possibility?
Also no disregard to the NZFC but most would have hoped to seen womens teams under that banner buy now.

Another thing i notice is China,England and the USA asking FIFA for a World Club Cup made for womens league champions around the world.

As for Goalies, The good ones seem rare to come by - not just in New Zealand but all over the world, I have never really seen any jr level coaching for it in the womens game.

There is/was a New Zealand women's national league, it's federation rather than NZFC franchise run though.

Big call to ask Terry to fund a W-League side, because (like the youth league) the FFA aren't going to pay.

If womens matches were Curtain Raisers they would. Though that defeats the purpose because there is no money to made out of it (unless a sponsor(s) comes to the party and pays more than it costs Terry to fund the team - Can't see that happening though.
