seeing the nz under 17s playing in the world cup qualifiers i did'nt see much players who could progress to the first team.who in the team do you think can make it??

best player for me in the team was the boy from rangers andrew milne, he was outstanding and for me is the future of nz football. Also i think blackburn rovers cameron lindsay did'nt shine as much as i thought, had high expectations for him and he had a weak tournament for me but still think he must have a future in the nz first team aswell.

how far do you seeing this squad going in the world cup and who do you see making the first team??

Have heard from Players who played at the Qualifiers that new players are coming in ever week don't know the reason for this but apparently another left back and other players. When does the squad get chosen for the World cup? and it seems pointless to me if you have been playing in the Qualifiers have sacrificed to move up to Auckland and then may not even make the final squad but i guess its how much you want it.

Yeah I know their are 2 players from Whangarei that have just been invited to train with the squad. A striker and a midfielder/defender.

Love this from wikitravel:

Get around>: By car

Lots of aggressive street sellers surround the car when you get to crossroads. You shouldn't have a problem if you keep the windows and doors locked however. Armed ambushes are pretty common.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Groups A,B, and F seem a little rough compared to the others!  Obviously hard to tell at age group tournaments though.

Burkina Faso are traditionally very strong at age-group levels. Turkey should be very good considering they qualified from Europe, not sure what to expect from Costa Rica.

that will be because the team will be aged between 17 and 31 years old.

Hey guys, seeing as how the youngsters are playing at the World Cup in Nigeria in October, does anyone know if any more friendlies have been organised for the boys?

Don't for one second think the U17s haven't kicked a ball in anger since qualifying for Nigeria.

What they've been up to is following the blueprint which the U17 girls employed last season, in terms of playing matches against local teams, and training regularly together throughout the week.

In the case of the girls, they competed in the U-15 Metro boys league, while the boys have been pitting their wits against the various North Harbour senior men's teams.

This Saturday, for instance, they're up against North Shore United at Allen Hill Stadium from 2.45pm.

I'm not aware of any international activity which has yet been scheduled - certainly none has been announced. But now that the draw has revealed their opponents in the group stages, you can guarantee that the powers that be will be working on sorting out some pre-finals action against opposition of similar calibre and style of play to that being faced in Nigeria.

Cheers,

JR

Its good to hear them playing together but I hope they get to play a number of games overseas against a good variation of teams as the style of play they will meet will be very different from what they will have experienced in Auckland.

Yeah I agree but that would be a little expensive to expect sending over these teams for friendlies in the eyes of NZF.  And might be disruptive to the players schooling too

Looks like an Auckland and Hamilton team to me - how do they get to be called New Zealand?

I think a number of the players from around the country have relocated north to be part of the squad.  It's the way NZ football have been trying to do things lately.

2 Birkenhead players plus 2 more on reserve standby. Oh, and a Birkenhead captain.

Three for me, and two for them.

No one good enough from Capital Football region.

I dont think that would be the case with next years u17s as we have a number of promising players in that age group.

Isn't it a sad indictment of NZ Football that kids have to uproot themselves and their family to be considered to represent their country. Does it reflect the fact that NZF do not consider that there are any good coaches capable of delivering their programme(s) outside of Auckland? I just feel that you won't get necessarily the best kids, but rather the ones whose families are in a financial position to move. Yeahright2009-08-26 19:44:19

I don't think anyone missed out on the squad because they were unable to relocate Yeahright.

I think it's just a case of the coaching staff preparing the squad the best they can.  We often compain that our teams are poorly prepared, and there are a limited number of ways to improve that preparation.

I can understand it, with schooling on top of training, it would be difficult to get everyone together often enough in the lead up to tournaments to build a side when coming from all over the country.  Don't particularly like it, but I can understand it.

I also understand the mind set of the preparation model but I still find it sad that there isn't a way to include players without them relocating. And yes I do believe that there are kids in all the squads who have missed out because their families are unwilling or unable to move.

I agree, but how would you achieve that realistically?  These lads are playing in a weekly league and training regularly.  I don't know how you could accommodate a commuter in that sort of set up.

Obviously they've made exceptions for those playing overseas, but there's a big difference between them and someone playing for their local high school outside Auckland.

are all the poeple out there complaining about kids having to relocate also the people that were complaining when our U20s missed out to Tahiti recently? Seriously, these squads have to be based somewhere to prepare, and this is one of the best prepared teams for a long time - copying the model used by the Womans u17s last year.
Get over the anti Auckland nonsense, all the other teams at this impending World Cup will have moved the kids into a base and developed/pushed them for a long time.
This is a great step towards world class preperation, and the only way we have a hope of making the second round.
Good on them, all the best!

I guess if the coaching staff and half the players are going to be out of Auckland then majority rules.

i agree Wellington is currently the home of football in NZ and good on you for it. Auckland had its chance and blew it with respect to the professional teams - and I could never see a forum such as this taking off if it was Auckland based so good on you all.

What I object to though is complaints about this or any national team being based here - population spread suggests we will have a large % of the players from this area, and lets face it from our NZFC teams down to schoolboy level and youth age group reps you will find Auckland to be most successful over a long period of time.

Lets all get behind this U17 team and hope the media does too - ive seen them play a few times and played agaisnt a number of them and they have considerably more potential then previous teams at this level I believe. The draw they have helps too. All the best lads.

Some of the thinking expressed in this thread is a bit of a worry...

The reality is that if we want our national teams to progress, and actually succeed, then we need more of this type of arrangement, not less... prior to Australia's departure to Asia, our U17s only ever qualified for the WC once - 1997, when the vast majority of the squad was based in Auckland because the boys involved were expected to relocate... this allowed them to train daily, and it paid off... sure the results at the WC weren't flash, but the preparation at least got them there.

Same thing in 1999, when the squad was again Auckland based... would they have got the result v Poland etc if they'd stayed spread round the country and gathered the fortnight prior?

Likewise the Women's U17s, most based in Auckland last year and look how well they did.

Personally I don't care whether they're Auckland-based or not, it can be Wellington, Christchurch, Gore, I couldn't care less - as long as they're all in one place training and playing to become a decent side.  This HAS to be the basis for future age-group international preparations... and let's be honest, all regional bias aside, Auckland probably makes the most sense in terms of resources etc.

And at the risk of upsetting Hillary Commission-types, if a certain kid doesn't have the mental strength to handle a move at age 16 to further his footballing career, will he have the mental strength to handle the pressures of international football?

Does it really matter where the kid hails from?  should this side contain the best players, or be some equal opportunity regionally representative love fest??  I mean saying it's "not fair" is like saying France has it all wrong by making promising youngsters move to Clarefontaine from their home cities... and Australia's Institutes of Sport sure haven't worked... even England have recognised that canning Lilleshall backfired...

And seriously, if there's a major financial or accommodation issue that prevents a youngster relocating, then I'll be the first to chip in and help out.  I never ever had the ability to play at that level, but if I'd been offered a chance and it meant moving cities, I would've crawled to get there if I'd had to.

Focus, people...

NZF cannot win, there will always be critics

Yeahright, it comes with the territory.  It's like saying that you want to live in Auckland and play for the Phoenix, how are they actually supposed to prepare the team unless you are advocating these guys chucking in school?
