WC coverage for those with "Earth TV"

Question:

Have we had it confirmed yet what games will be shown live Free To Air and what channel(s) this will occur on?

And if so how will other games be covered? (ie. delayed full replay vs highlights).

For my own reasons I prefer not to throw my money at pay TV providers.

I think TVNZ will have some of the games, normally they have to show a portion of them live and the big games do tend to be shown live.

I have a feeling I read somewhere (or I could be making this up completely) that FIFAs rule is that if the all games live rights go to a Pay TV channel then a free-to-air channel has to be given a portion of them to also show live? (Could be complete rubbish and it is just the way it has happened in NZ last 2 WCs)

Most likely Prime will be the free to air broadcaster as they are run by sky who have the live rights.

Its no longer a problem.

Yeah all the NZ games will be free to air I reckon, plus the big games towards the money end of the tournament. Will also have highlights I presume.

Sky will once again offer great coverage though I'd imagine, with replays at good times for those that work etc.

This could well be true actually. Like the Winter Olympics coming up.

That sounds about right.

TVNZ had the qualifer though and I think had Confed Cup replays? I have a feeling the negotiation is done with FIFA and not with the host broadcaster in the country

I'm hoping they'll put up huge screens in all the big centres around NZ and all the footy fans can watch the games there.  That way it won't really matter (with regard to NZ games anyway).

I know they did it in Aussie and it looked awesome.

The Winter Olympics (and next Summer games) were granted to Sky by the IOC on the basis that a minimum level of coverage will be provided by Sky FTA (ie. via Prime).

That was a specific agreement and as already mentioned Prime is not always the FTA partner when Sky is the live broadcaster.

So are we all guessing here or has anything been formally announced?

I can't see Dunedin doing that but hey great idea. I should get onto the council.

Isn't that the year the world ends? Fitting that Dunedin has something to do with it.

Three for me, and two for them.

Slightly off topic I know but, does anyone know if Sky will be setting up a temporary channel exclusively for the World Cup. They did this back in 2002 Korea/Japan and I thought it was brilliant.

I am thinking about installing satellite TV to get this "free to air"

An old article, so not sure if there has been a new deal following our qualification.

"Under the agreement with Australasian rights holders SBS, SKY will provide full LIVE coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, hosted by South Africa."

I remember reading this some time ago, and it makes sense here - SBS TV Australia is the 'chief' TV supplier for Oceania. Countries in this region negotiate with SBS Australia, rather than FIFA, for World Cup rights.
