Steven Old: hows he going in Aussie??

Hoggs trial, did he go well or fail?

Brockie, is he heading overseas?

No idea about the first two, though with regards to Jeremy Brockie, people have been saying he is soon to be signed up by an A-League squad.  I also read elsewhere that after his Olympic performance a Danish club wanted to give him a trial.

Jeremy Brockie is of course with the Team Wellington and then off to the new A-league franchise North Queensland Fury FC, he recently signed up.

Nothing came of Hoggy's jaunt in England although there was some interest and I believe he has plans to give it another whip after the U20s qualifiers.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Also Daniel Keat, I remember thinking he looked pretty solid a couple years ago before he did his knee.

Any clues?

Also are any of the college boys finishing their time soon and looking to go pro, Henderson and Boxall etc?

Don`t think Michae Whitel is at Rhyl any longer, his name doesn`t feature in any squad lists or game reports.
Young 17 year old Sam Heenan from Auckland  plays for their reserves, has featured in the first tesam once this year. Was originally at Shrewsbury playing in their youth team
Rhyl are currently top of the Welsh Premier leauge

white finished in wales some time ago.

was training (trialling!!!??!!) at canterbury, but wasn't keen to play and miss registration with an aussie club.  no aussie offers came in, but he decided not to register with canterbury just in case something australian came in later.  abit embarrassing for the press who ran a massive article and huge colour pic of him one saturday stating that he was lining up for them the next day...  i think he's over in oz now training or trialling.

I recon that we have more of idea of how players are doing then NZF.  I know alot of quality kiwis playing around the world who have never been mentioned in any NZ team, junior or senior.  Maybe NZF/Ricky should start using Football Manager as a scouting tool just to discover some quality leads etc.

Not that many of you rate the J-League but I know that Michael Fitzgerald has been re-signed by the J-League team Albirex Niigata and they are loaning him out this year. Rumour is Niigata is looking at processing his Residency so they can take him back in 2010 as a Japanese Resident rather than a foreigner.  Apparently he has a J2 Team who are interested in loaning him and they will be looking at him over the next few months.  (Just to put some perspective on the J-League, Joel Griffiths played for a J2 team in his off-season.) It will be interesting to see what happens to this player over the next few years and if we'll see him emerge. It seems at this stage, he has managed to keep his J1 Team  interested - something that neither Leo Shin or Kayne Vincent were able to do as they were both released by the J2 clubs that signed them.

I haven't seen anyone bagging the J League on here.

Are you his mum?

No but if he makes it, I wouldn't mind being his mum.
As I said when I commented on the forum "Politics picking sides" (June 2008), my son played with Michael and managed to catch up with him when he was back over Christmas, they're quite good friends.
Anyway if I remember rightly in the forum "Politics picking sides" there were a few comments which I interpreted as punters not really holding the JLeague with much esteem.
People are entitled to their opinions but it will be interesting to see how this lad's soccer future pans out. He's one of many that seem to be always under NZ Soccer's radar but I thought I'd just make a point that this lad was still out there. The other two boys I mentioned (Kayne and Leo) are the same age as Michael and my son, hence I know about them as all the boys were playing schoolboy soccer and club soccer at the same time. I've always taken an interest in my son's age group when it comes to soccer.

I wouldn't take it too personally, people questioning the level your son('s friend) is playing at.

Is it any higher than that of the kids playing College football in America?  Who knows?  At the end of the day good on him for giving it a whip and cream will rise to the top in the end so even if he's not on NZF's radar at the moment if he's good enough he will be eventually.

Has he sent in tape (or even an email) to try and force his way in?  People like Stu aren't omniscient, and Japan's a long way away.

I can't imagine there are any/many who are likely to have fallen through the cracks of the All Whites though.  NZ is just too small for it to happen.  News and his FM mates might disagree with me on that - and I'd be interested to hear it.

I don't take it personally and not sure why you think I should - Do you know something that I don't - I'm pretty sure I didn't father the boy!

I've never liked the way things are done in NZF and this forum gives me a good avenue to vent my frustrations. Your comments endorse what I said at the start, that not many NZers put much stead in Asian Football. The Australians however knew what region they wanted to be a part of in order for their football to progress.

It's funny that you say that Japan is a long way away - England is even further, however it seems that if a lad manages to get into an English club (Doesn't matter what level ie: 3rd, 4th Divn, non-divns, small leagues ie: Welsh League), they automatically come on to the NZF radar.
It's also interesting that you automatically compare the J-League to US College Football - I should point out that the Top A-League team lost to the J-League Team "Gamba Osaka" TWICE. So obviously you must be saying that the A-Leauge level must lower than the US College football level, if their top team couldn't beat the J-League team. (It's also interesting to note that a lot of the players that play in the A-League, make up our National Teams.) Take from that what you will. Incidentally, Ben says that Michael isn't concerned about NZF as his aim is to be playing in the J-League next year.

As far as others who aren't on the radar go. Do NZF have the Rufer boy and Collucio boy on their radar? Do they have Lewis Black (US College football) on their radar?

But he's still never played for the first team hasn't he? That was the point that was mad on the last thread, peopl can't go over and watch someone train.
The fact is YOU haven't even seen him play so how can you call for him to be in the side?

NZF know who all of these guys are, butfinances are what they are, let's be honest.   james dean2009-02-03 23:06:32

If you are part of a first team squad in a J league club, then you are good enough to be in any New Zealand team.
You will soon see the major difference in standard in a couple of weeks, when the NZ under 17 go over to face Japan under 17. There trainings involve 6 days a week and is there life over there. By comparisons our trainings are soft, soft , soft. After training 3 days a week over here, half the team is injured and can not handle the pace.

NZF know who all of these guys are, butfinances are what they are, let's be honest.

I am Michael's mother and a friend told us that there was a discussion involving Michael.

You are quite right, he has never played for the first team. However there is only one first team squad so when you're signed, you're signed as a first team member not as a Reserve Team member but a First Team member. You all train together and it's not until the end of the week that the coach decides who his squad of 15 for a game will be, so every training you have an opportunity to potentially play for the first team. Michael made the 15 man squad 4 times but unfortunately did not come off the bench.

We've had lots of people ask us why he wasn't considered for the NZ U20s or the Olympic Team but we aren't concerned and neither is he. (It's quite laugable because in his second year of High School the Japanese U20 coach was interested in him and asked his soccer coach if Michael had any Japanese heritage but of course he didn't, so wasn't eligible to attend their training camp.) At the end of the day he's living his dream and that's all that matters. We know how hard he has worked to get where he is and people here will have no comprehension of his achievement because they know so little about Japan and the J-League. This year Michael is on loan and his main focus is to be a playing member in 2010 when he returns to Albirex.

That's great to hear and I'm certainly not having a go at Michael, it's fantastic that he's doing so well in Japan.  As a common theme on the site I've asked that people who see fit to recommend a player to others on here that they have actually seen that person play, and thats the only reason that I made those comments - in no way was I knocking him.  Thank you for taking the time to let people know how he is going.

I'm sure that his time with both the first team and with New Zealand teams will come and I'm sure everyone is hoping for the best for him this season.

Unfortunate that he hasn't been able to get a gig in the football league, having not played a lot of football in the last 12 months he'll need to get somewhere soon to stay on the radar.

Agreed JD. I was thinking about him again last weekend when another centre back was needed for Charlton's relegation dog-fight. Not being in one of the higher leagues you just drop right off the radar when emergency loans are required in the Championship and L1/2. I hope he stays fit and gets noticed when recruiting season starts again.
