tl;dr, Michael Burgess = Numpty.

Nelsen stepped down as captain, he was not "dumped". He's coming towards the end of his career in the premier league and it was a mutual agreement between him and Allardyce that Samba, being a relaively young, but senior player, should be primed for the job. It is to my understanding that admiral is pretty much mentoring Samba through it.

Smeltzy profited handsomly from the campaign, as did Reid. Apart from those two, who was there in the squad that was supposed to move onto bigger things?

Nelsen, Smith, Killen and Wood have already got themselves established at big clubs. Vicelich and Elliotttt and arguably Paston are well into the back end of their careers. Bannatyne and Barron retired. So who does that leave as potential movers? Lochhead, Bertos, Christie, Brockie, Clapham and Brown.

The Latter 4 did not get anywhere near enough gametime to create an impact on world cup scouts. And as for Bertos and Lochy, anyone with more than one eye can see that anything above the A-League is well out of their depth. Werder Bremen? you must be kidding.

p.s Chris Wood is still 18, not 19.

You've pretty much summed up why some changes haven't happened and as for Elliottt being a ASB Premiership marquee player?  He could have probably got a short term contract with any A-League club. I spoke with Glen Moss after the GCU game this season and he said he even recommended Elliottt to Miron Bleiburg as he was without a club. Elliottt has made it known though that he wants to stay in the US due to his wifes job.

His comment about Christie is pretty misleading too.. "The Rockies currently sit third from bottom in a league that is destined to be scrapped after this season."

The league is actually getting merged with another one.  So a bit less doom and gloom than indicated.

Are you thinking of the USL1 & USL2 merger? The USSF D2 is currently a forced temporary merger between USL1 and NASL (Tampa Bay being a member of the latter) - so technically the comment is correct in that USSF D2 is most likely not returning next year. That being said, NASL is expected to still exist next year, and likely FC Tampa Bay with it, so you're right then on the less doom and gloom.

Also - Tampa Bay Rockies? WTF?  Robb2010-09-29 21:04:41

Yeah, spotted that as well. Tampa Bay = Florida. Rockies = Colorado. Couldn't get much further away.

Yer might have got a bit mixed up there.  Anyway, the point is the story implies he is at a team that will disband next year.  Which is pretty far from the truth.

Is there a mention of Vicelich actually going to a higher league? prolonging his career. The whole story is a bit of a beat up, I mean there's a lot of us on here that could write a more accurate paragraph on Nelsen without talking to a spokesperson from Blackburn. Nelsen is club captain, and this started at the end of last season anyway! Smeltz is in a significantly higher league and so is Reid. Smith is now getting regular game time. Three games at the world cup doesn't mean as much to overseas scouts as it used to.

Btw It's Elliott! not with only one tLuis Garcia2010-09-30 09:32:44

Also, Rockies = baseball (and ice hockey if you go back far enough)
