Eluding a solid defensive structure is quite difficult.
New Zealand Women's U-17s
Definitely what Heraf wanted to do.
I disagree. I thought the girls played a really good high pressing game. Most of the shots we had were from turnover ball in there half of the field. We were well structured in defence but it wasn't a 10 players behind the ball mindset. We did lump the ball forward a fair bit, but you got to remember these girls are only 16 years old. And sending the ball forward regularly allowed us to deploy the high press without giving away possession needlessly in front of our own goal. Looked like there intention was to get the ball forward quick and be direct in attack.
Isnt that how Heraf wanted us to play?..
Good defensive shape, minimise risks/mistakes, keep ball in the opposition half and force them into mistakes
Yes see your point. But possession based tiki taka type football doesn't always work either. You look at the last world cup. Spain and Germany exited early trying to play that style, Possession is not always king if you are constantly passing the ball backwards and not creating scoring chances. Quick counterattacking teams like France or set piece specialists like England did better. But in the end I guess you have to play to your strengths and have the ability to vary your game depending on the opposition.
I was eluding to a solid defensive structure, high pressure style of play that Heraf seemed to like. Not possession based football

Yup - he highlights the fact they had prepared to have limited possession and needed a solid defensive structure

I think he is alluding to your spelling.
NZ girls looking strong at 2-1 up at half time. Uruguay dangerous on the ball though. NZ have to stay focused and disiplined. Shame about the ref standard. Some very soft decisions for most of the game, then to scared to give an obvious penalty at the end of the half.
NZ win 2-1. fantastic result.
and knock the hosts out of the tournament
First NZ team at a FIFA event to get to the quarterfinals? Also the 8th time a kiwi team has made it out of the group stage at a FIFA event but this is the first time with a game in hand.
Should the girls try to win the group? I think Ghana might play there bench warmers in the next game.
It's not really clear who they will play and where if they do win the group. My money is on a changed line up with those on yellow cards in particular being rested. There's plenty of depth in the squad so why not give the non starters a hit out. Agree that Ghana will probably do the same.
Terrific effort by the girls yesterday. Extremely hot day and Ghana are very strong and athletic.Whilst NZ made several changes to their line up Ghana stuck with most of their regular starters. The squad now moves to Colonia for a quarter final vs Japan.
Very pretty Spanish colonial town Colonia, that often gets swamped by Argentinians seeking a muy romantic weekend escape.
It’s only about a 3 hour ferry trip from downtown Buenos Aires and its 10 million odd inhabitants.
Great little country Uruguay, though expensive by South American standards. Get into the asado (meat) and mate (an acquired taste).
Good luck girls.

Ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia is about 45-50 minutes. 3 hours is Buenos Aires to Montevideo.
Tough draw with Japan but there's no doubt they've done extremely well at this torny already. I'd expect a number of this squad to form the heart of the Football Ferns the way the 2008 side has done for the past 4-5 years.

Apologies you are more correct than I remember. Ferry websites say 75 mins BA to Colonia.
Cool part of the world, with a bit of a NZ connection. HMS Achilles a NZ crewed warship, was one of 3 Royal Navy warships that defeated the German battleship Graf Spee in Battle of the River Plate (WW2). The German captain scuttled the crippled Graf Spee just off Montevideo. There are a couple of NZ sailors buried in the British Cemetery in Montevideo. A history tragic I visited it, and lay some flowers. A local musician enjoying a spliff gave me directions.
Gay marriage, abortion & marijuana are all legal in Uruguay. So different to most of conservative South America.

I think this age group is too young for statements like that... and not so sure your comparison is correct either:

Maybe 4 of these 21 I can spot in the ferns today?
Don't get me wrong - they are doing fantastic! But at U17 level they have still got a long way to go :)
1-1 at half-time vs Japan.
looked good most of first half.
Equaliser stunned us, but shouldn't have, it was a bit one of those things.
Looking a little less confident second half so far. Need to keep pressing well like we did first half
Gone to penalties!
Congratulations girls, first ever WC semi final appearance for a New Zealand side!

Pretty sure more than 4 have played for the Ferns at one time or another though.....
But anyway woohoo, amazing result.
Wow, a NZ Women's team beat Japan? Ummm....

Nobody tell Heraf!
Semi-final vs Spain at 8am on Thursday.
So cool, great effort
Great game, fantastic result! Congrats to everyone involved.
Our keeper was excellent - her penalty save was top notch as was her coming off the line.
Must be pushing for a case of being the goal keeper of the tournament. I feel a little sorry for our #9 - has a very good touch for a tall girl and looks to link well, but is constantly not being hit when we play direct.
Also our RB looks very good, not technical, but wins every challenge and quick.
Yes Leat was terrific, stepping up to take the 5th pen shows her confidence.
Womens football in NZ has been for a long time now showing the male side of the game how things can be done. Wish more people understood this.
Our right back is Mackenzie Barry from Central. Taranaki girl I think. She has had one hell of a tournament. A star of the future but I believe there will be many of those from this group.
Result! Is this the first semi final apparance for any kiwi team? I'm sure it is, well done.

Agree but with one major caveat. The strength in depth of the international men's football, compared to international women's football is still poles apart. The FFs scorelines at the OFC Nations Cup in Noumea continue to highlight this.
Also travel through somewhere like South America, and you can't help but note the huge resources & money thrown at men's sport ie football, in comparison to women's sport.
It seemed pretty much the same when I travelled through Africa (admittedly 20 years ago). Then you have some Muslim countries, where it's very hard for women to participate in any type of sport or exercise.
Thankfully the world is slowly changing, and situation for women & girls is improving for the better worldwide. But at the moment the men's international game is still far stronger in depth.
Well done girls, awesome result against Japan and good luck against Spain.

I wasnt really thinking about the things you are talking about. I was thinking of how the womens game has been an earlier adopter of player focussed coaching systems than the mens game, an earlier adopter of processes the AB's use (for example) with respect to leadership, responsibility and accountability being something the players are more involved in. I was thinking more along the lines of coaching methods being more in line with guided discovery learning principles which have long been proven to result in retention of knowledge and understanding much better than the old school " stop, stand still, demonstrate ideas. Also the club v school thing not being an issue with the schoolgirls playing on Wednesday afternoons and how this doesnt have anywhere near as big an effect on players training and playing pressures as the boys game experiences. Not everything is perfect but there is more of a general movement to improvement rather than the relentless and mind numbingly stupid egos in the male game pulling in different directions because everyone thinks they know better than the other person. The womens game has a better level of cohesion with respect to the most important aspects which is simply moving forward with coaching systems and philosophies.
less ego, more smarts.

Pre-work footy brekkie :-) any ideas on venue anyone??
