New Zealand Football: Junior Football Ferns edge closer to Germany with second win

January 23, 2009

AUCKLAND The Junior Football Ferns banged eight goals past the Cook Islands at the OFC U-20 Womens Championships at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday to take another step towards qualifying for Julys FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup in Germany.

New Zealand posted the same score against American Samoa on Thursday and can now qualify for the 16 nation finals by avoiding defeat in their final match on Monday against Tonga, who sit in second place on four points after a 4-0 win over American Samoa.

Rosie White, Hannah Wall and substitute Liz Milne all scored twice, while Elise Mamanu-Gray and Hannah Wilkinson each chipped in with a goal for New Zealand,  who took over half an hour to break down the resilient Cooks side, before hitting their straps with a crisp second half display.

Youve got to give credit to the Cook Islands in those first 35 minutes, said New Zealand coach Tony Readings, they made it really hard for us but we were just patient, we believed we had the quality and that eventually it would tell.

That patience was rewarded when the Cook Islands failed to clear an Anna Green corner and Mamanu-Gray, herself of Cook Islands descent, headed New Zealand into the lead.

Within 45 seconds Rosie White doubled the score, with a rifled low left foot shot from just outside the box and grabbed her second four minute later by dispossessing one defender 35 metres out, beating another and then the keeper to give the kiwis some breathing room at halftime.

The first half was a bit slow and it took us a while to get going, White said.

But once we found the back of the net it started to feel a better, we started to move the ball a bit more and we began to play like we shouldve from the start.

White was also involved in the goal of the game 12 minutes into the second half with substitute Sarah McLaughlin threading an incisive through ball for White, who in turn picked out Wilkinson at the back post.

A re-jigged line up saw Wilkinson replaced by fullback Liz Milne as Hannah Wall moved up front and the Wellington-raised pair cashed in with a brace of goals each to finish the scoring.

Wall smashed hers in a devastating two minute spell midway through the half and was denied a hat trick only by the crossbar, while Milne sandwiched those efforts with a goal from her first touch of the game in the 59th minute and a long range cross-cum-shot with a minute remaining.

The satisfaction of victory was tempered by the sight of influential midfielder Annalie Longo stretchered off the pitch after a crunching late tackle as the match entered stoppage time.

The 18 year old veteran of a World Cup and three age-group World Cups left the grounds with her left ankle heavily iced, is now in doubt for Mondays decider against Tonga.

That match kicks off at 4pm, with the Cooks Islands meeting American Samoa at 1.30pm.

Yay! Went along to a couple of the games cos my friend is in the team. Unfortunately, I missed yesterday's game and she scored and set one up!! Still, great for the team to get to go to Germany. All the best to them there. They are a very good team (although the opposition was poor!) and I reckon they have a decent chance of getting past the group stages if all goes well. Some of their players are well good.

Abby Erceg is who you're thinking of.

And no, I couldn't believe it either, and still can't!

And that's before one considers the wider implications of her actions - think along the lines of would an overseas club want to take a risk on recruiting a NZ women's international if this is an example of how one behaves when given an opportunity such as this.

Thankfully we've had a couple of the cherubs take up professional contracts in recent weeks, so hopefully Abby's case has been seen by the wider women's footballing world as a case of the immaturity of one individual, as opposed to tarring all with the same brush.

Ali Riley has been snapped up by FC Gold Pride to play in the WPS (Women's Professional Soccer) competition, while Hannah Bromley flies out tonight to take up a two-year contract with IF Flora in Norway.

And their reward?

Being drawn in the "Group of Death", the first time those words and New Zealand have ever featured in the same sentence.

Sweden in Bielefeld on 14 July NZ time
North Korea (2006 winners, 2008 runners-up) in Bielefeld on 17 July
Brazil (semi-finals 2002, 2004, 2006, quarter-finals 2008) in Dresden on 21 July

As Sky hold the rights to show coverage in this country of all FIFA Finals, you can expect to see all three games on the box, along with coverage of all matches from the quarter-finals onwards at Germany 2010.

New Zealand Football: Junior Football Ferns lose second USA friendly

May 16, 2010

AUCKLAND A late flurry of goals has seen the Junior Football Ferns defeated by world champion USA 4-0 today in the second of two U-20 womens football internationals in Los Angeles.

Despite a much stronger showing following Fridays 2-0 defeat, New Zealand fell behind in the 25th minute to a Sydney Leroux breakaway but could have levelled the scores before halftime if the crossbar hadnt denied Renee Leota.

New Zealand were left cursing the woodwork twice in the second half with another potential equaliser, this time from Hannah Wilkinson, also hitting the crossbar, and a Hannah Wall shot crashing off the bar onto the line and out shortly after the USA extended their lead through Sam Mewis in the 66th minute.

Instead, New Zealand faded and goals in the 75th and 85th minutes to Tiffany McCarthy and Sade Ayinde ultimately gave the home side a comfortable winning margin.

With Julys FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup in Germany to look forward to and pool games against heavyweight trio Brazil, Korea DPR and Sweden to navigate, two matches in three days against the reigning U-20 champion was tough but valuable preparation in the eyes of New Zealand coach Tony Readings.

Weve learnt that we can match it against the worlds best teams but we cant do it for 90 minutes, Readings said.

In and out of possession we have enough in our locker to hurt teams, but we have a lot of work to do on our fitness because on the world stage the best teams will get stronger at the end of games.

The Junior Football Ferns open their FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup campaign against Sweden in Bielefeld on July 13, and face former champions Korea DPR at the same venue three days later, before moving to Dresden to finish pool play against Brazil on July 20.
