I thought she did really well with what she got. A couple of hairy touches here and there and then a couple of really nice touches as well. Worked her arse off pressing high and getting back to be available for passes. Hope she starts in the next game.

I think your taking my comment too personally, we need a critical minds and opinions to keep things in check otherwise fudgeit lets have a parade over this draw.

Considering the amount of possession France had the entire game the defence was awesome and we had more shots on target but that is just a stat. France would be pissed at this result which is credit to the Ferns. I sure hope we keep improving, maybe nick a win the next game.

Did you actually watch the game?

"Considering the amount of possession France had the entire game the defence was awesome and we had more shots on target but that is just a stat."

This is weird you use one stat as praise but then dismiss another stat as just a stat.

We had 3 or 4 players who would not have looked out of place in the French side, in fact you could push that to 4 or 5.

Steinmetz was one of the best players on the pitch, Grace Jale also played well. Paige Satchel  wouldnt be out of place either. Hannah Blake is good enough as is our keeper.

I don't think I took anything at all personally? Just thought your comment was overly critical and needed some evening out. The 0-0 draw deserves the praise it is getting and we will likely be punching up for the foreseeable future so should give credit where credit is due.

No one is proposing a parade, but you seem to think we shouldn't be happy about a 0-0 draw against one of the greatest footballing nations in the world. So no, no need to knight any of them, but you shouldn't be annoyed about praise over that result and that performance either.

Interesting game to watch France was clinical, felt nz was good at keeping in the game however some players I question how they were even selected, Turnball plays it safe. Bunge had an excellent game and a number of others but at least 3 were off there game, I would have expected this fdp programme would have produced better players. Well done for the draw tho, good performance. Turnball did have his best team on I believe

I understand that some of last years record breaking under 17's squad have  not made any of the recent under 20's camps. Personally I'm amazed by this. I've seen one of those not selected who seems to have taken her game to another level. Seems to have worked so hard to improve her game but been discarded. We can't afford to lose players like this.

ridiculous score,  wouldnt it have been better to select developmental players for this squad for the future of womans football? This makes absolutely no sense, so many more talented players missing out and not given the opportunity to play, we know by experience u19 Ofc isnt challenging, It does make coaches wonder why, furthermore pushing players to move to Auckand to do FDP is also wrong, we need to make sure main centres do the exact same thing so players are going offshore or being not scene. I don’t agree with this Coach telling players to relocate, but some will get sucked into this as its happened before

What are we trying to acheive with a scoreline like that?

Seems like a big waste of time. OFC need to look at the format of the competition, have NZ team play against the winner if a the qualifying tournament. NZ play the game away to the winners.

Its not NZF's fault that this score happened. They dont know for sure how weak or how strong the opposition will be, they do know they will in all likely hood win games but they dont know if they will score so big. They also have to send teams that ensure qualification, sending a development side entails  risk. I remember the Aussies making that same mistake years ago by sending a domestic picked mens team to Mt Smart to play the AW's in an Oceania cup final, the one where Ryan scored the winner and set NZF up for the next couple of years.

Our job is to qualify, its not our job to even the playing field and sending b teams to these sorts of competitions is asking for trouble.

Understand NZ beat Samoa 30 nil. No team or coach should indorse such a humiliation of any team regardless of the competition. Surely when New Zealand we’re comfortably ahead they could have played more of a training game and given the other team more time and space so the score does not blow out.

As if it wasn't tough enough for them anyway. Samoa had a player red carded just before half time for deliberate handball.

6-0 over Tahiti the other day, played last 15 mins or so with 10 after Mackenzie Barry got taken out and dislocated elbow.

Another big win today, 12-0 over American Samoa. Could have easily been much more if finishing was a bit more clinical

...and repeat.

Scraped through the Semi with 11 unanswered goals vs Vanuatu.

Another 5 to Kelli Brown, taking her to 20 for the tournament. Might just hang on for golden boot since she has a 12 goal lead with 1 to play.

These girls really need a bigger challenge. They get nothing from OFC qualifying tournaments.

Saw some of the games on YouTube - the opposition's conditioning is questionable.

Player numbers in the Islands - especially in the women's game, need to be increased.

Looked like they were playing beginner club teams, score lines reflected this.

As said, we are off to WC - but maybe we can help Oceania develop?

Camps in NZ - tours, coaching clinics? May already be happening.

We're delighted to confirm our Women's U-20s side will play a two-game series against Australia Women's U-20s as part of their preparations for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2022

https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/newsarticle/114084?newsfeedId=1253682
Match details vs Australia U-20s
Game 1
Wednesday, 6 April 2022
Venue: Deakin Stadium, Canberra
Kick Off: 6.30pm AEDT/8.30pm NZT

Game 2
Sunday, 10 April 2022
Venue: Viking Stadium, Canberra
Kick Off: 2pm AEDT/4.00pm NZT

To kickstart preparations for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2022, a two-game series with Australia’s U-20s has been confirmed for the Junior Football Ferns on April 6 and 10 in Canberra.

The series is hugely important for World Cup preparations, says New Zealand U-20s head coach Gemma Lewis.

“Due to COVID-19 we’ve been unable to play since the World Cup qualifiers in 2019, and this will also be the first time this group have played teams against non-OFC opposition,” she says.

“It’s important to get that range of opposition ahead of the World Cup in August. Australia, having come through the tough AFC qualifiers and recently being confirmed to go to the World Cup themselves, will certainly be approaching this series as key to kickstarting their own preparations.”

In November 2020 FIFA confirmed that both the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, initially postponed from 2020 to 2021, would be cancelled due to the challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic around preparation time for age group teams, as well as for finalising qualification tournaments. The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2022 will take place from August 10-28.

“It’s been a tough cycle with there being no World Cups for the U-17s or the U-20s over the last few years,” says Lewis.

Lewis has named a 23-player squad for the series, with a heavy A-League Women’s influence. It includes a seven player Wellington Phoenix contingent in Alyssa Whinham, Ava Pritchard, Brianna Edwards, Charlotte Lancaster, Kate Taylor, Te Reremoana Walker and Zoe McMeeken, who were all part of the club’s inaugural A-League Women’s campaign, as well as Melbourne City’s Marisa van der Meer, who was also part of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 squad.

“We’ve got a good mix in the group,” says Lewis, also Wellington Phoenix’s inaugural head coach.

“There’s a large contingent who have now had a season playing professionally, some are coming in from college in the USA, while others have been in FFDP full time.

“With the World Cup being a few months away now, this tour is particularly important in terms of getting a better understanding of the playing group. It’s an opportunity for us as coaching staff to see more of some players, narrow down the squad, as well as engraining our playing model and identity with the group,” she says.

Most of this group, seemingly not ready for jump up to the Ferns just yet. 3 starters I think from Nix Women team. Few more on the bench

Young Matildas are too good for the Junior Football Ferns, winning 5-1 in their opening match in Canberra.

Watched the first 30. Actually thought we competed well, given I think it was a 2nd 11 starting side.

First two goals were avoidable. Corner clearance fell kindly to a Matilda who scored 20 yards out off the post. The 2nd a penalty because of some niaeve defending.

Admittedly a lot of these girls haven't played much football of late, as a result  we didn't play our strongest XI giving game time to a lot of players that needed it. So a good hit out against strong opposition no doubt.
But it was like watching some of the early Nix womens games. Must be a Gemma Lewis thing. Insistent on passing out from the back no matter what, which Australia clicked onto early and put us under immense pressure. Resulting in us invariably giving the ball away in our own half. Back passes under pressure straight to Australian players lead to at least 3 of there goals.
A bug bear for me. Nix women did this as well. At attacking corners we stack the 6 yd box around the goal keeper. But the corner delivery is generally not good enough, so all our players end up running away from goal trying to gain possession of the ball. If they do manage to get a touch they are back to goal. If the opposition get possession they are in a very good position to counter attack.
Early days, and in reality it was only a training game. But a lot of work for Lewis to do. Enjoyed watching it and glad they made the effort to put a stream up.

Much better showing in the second game, with a 1-1 draw.
Looked like we started with a stronger XI and they competed well in a pretty even game. Walker had a strong game at CB with Taylor. Sheraf in goal also had an assured game. Nice goal by Clegg, and we almost won it with last kick of the game, but Taylors touch off a free kick went just over the bar. Much improved, compared to the first game.
