I have to disagree, sadly I think the girls were let down by a long ball game plan. In Annalie Longo and also Betsy Hassett we have two world class central midfielders who can play beautifully with the ball at their feet. I mean world class in their age group within the womens game and overseas among their peers that is how they are viewed. Rosie White and Hannah Wall are another two who are technically very good but sadly the game plan looked like bang it long and bypass the ball players.
We have reached a point in our football where we need to be braver on the coaching front and start to put faith in our players abilities on the ball, especially on the girls/women side of the game.
I saw breif glimpses during the games where we passed the ball around beautifully and looked dangerous doing so but those moments were far to infrequent as the ball simply got launched long too often.
Players wont get better at the passing game whilst we continue to avoid playing that way and on the womans side of the game we have enough players capable of playing with the ball at their feet. An absolute shame really, we could have done better if we had a bit more faith in our players abilities.

I have been on courses that the coaches have worked on and know them and my own experience is that they are really good coaches. The weird thing is I recently did the new version of our level 3 coaching course and it was inspirational and the ideas being taught to us were great. I cant quite work out why the team banged it long so much knowing what I do of the coaches. The way the team played doesnt fit with what I was expecting to see considering the ideas doing the rounds in the (local) international coaching circles. I do think we have good coaches for these teams, Im just a bit confused at the style of play.

New Zealand Football: Readings and Temple land age-group Ferns roles

AUCKLAND � Paul Temple has been appointed as the head coach of the New Zealand U-17 women�s football team for the second time while Tony Readings has been reappointed as head coach of the U-20 side as both team build towards World Cups in 2012.
Temple was head coach of the Young Football Ferns when New Zealand hosted the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women�s World Cup in 2008 and then served as Readings� assistant in the U-20 set-up for the 2010 campaign in Germany.
Temple says the experience across both camps will serve him well as he builds a new side for the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women�s World Cup in Azerbaijan.
�We�ve had a conveyor belt of young players coming out of age group teams into the senior environment in the last five years, and the main focus of my role is to make sure that continues,� said Temple.
�Working in both the U-17 and U-20 environments certainly helps in identifying the type of young player who can step up to higher levels.�
Temple�s first task will be assembling a pool of players � drawn largely from NZF�s National Talent Centres � to work towards the OFC U-17 Women�s Championship pencilled for early next year.
The road to the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women�s World Cup in Uzbekistan, which also begins with Oceania qualifiers in early 2012 will be Readings� second campaign in the lead coaching role although he previously served a three year term as U-20 assistant coach and is the current assistant to Football Ferns coach John Herdman.
�The integration between the three women�s national teams has been vital with the number of players graduating into the Football Ferns in recent years,� Readings said.
�At age group level my role will be develop players capable of representing, and winning games for, New Zealand at senior level.
Readings will have six players from the 2010 campaign eligible to compete again and will add to that core from the last U-17 group as well as casting a closer eye over some standout performers from the ASB Women�s Youth League.
NZF board member Fred de Jong, who sat on the interview panel, said the calibre of applicants was very high.
�Ultimately the campaign experience of Tony and Paul shone through in the interview process and we now have the opportunity to pair them up with other candidates who shown they have the experience or skills to complement those head coach appointments,� de Jong said.
New Zealand Football has begun the process of appointing assistant coaches and would not be seeking new applicants.

Can't believe TEMPLE is back what a joke. You read HERDMAN'S sum up of the loser performance from Cyprus. He says he now knows the format for the team, who starts, who comes on and when what a t**ser. NZ Women's soccer is dominated by these two clowns and they continue on the same path. Go to AK suck up and kiss up and you get looked at. Also Lesbian antics placed on young girls is unacceptable. I got no problems with it but when 17 year olds are put in that environment that says it all.
