Seriously the only "winners" in this one are well paid businessmen in suits feeling great about themselves.

Please someone tell me what has been done so far to promote junior football in NZ since November 14?

I've been looking around for examples but have not seen a single bit of difference in Dunedin when it comes to the profile of football since our qualification. No big campaign to get schoolkids into this football season. Nothing.

Registrations have already been taken and our club email hints at the surge in numbers expected this season - seems that we are content to take a "if we qualify, they will come" approach to building the local game.

Poor poor effort IMO but Dunedin may be a basket case.

In auckland. Can only win tickets.  see front page.

I dont know how to interpret that as it doesnt say tickets can only  or exclusively  be obtained through the competition, it just mentions that there are some up for grabs. So i would assume that there will be other ways for other people to view it? Further details to be released perhaps?

f**k OFF !!!!!!

it has it's own private FIFA plane, that can travel anywhere at any time (it's not an airliner)

it is a Mcdonell Douglas MD-83

Japan (rjaa) - welly (nzwn) IFR is not a f**king challenge. Although it does have to take a few legs. Maybe it will stop off in AUS / New cal to refule.

it has to stop off somewhere to refuel on the way to get to Auck anyway (Auck is an extra 2miles away from the cruise range)

or at least nzaa-nzwn a 45 min flight to have it at the capital for a few hours.

the only thing i'm not too sure on is if the runway at welly will be able to support it.

but if a 747 can land on it a bloody md can perform a short field landing at least.

anyway, It's not coming so we have to deal with it.

The Small Whites coaching courses have been paid for, allowing parents and other volunteers to get free coaching education. It's a start.

well even the private FIFA plane is currently grounded on some tarmac in europe for at least a few days then trying to clear out the masses will be given priority as far as flight routes go so if they havent scheduled any spare time to travel it around then someone is gonna miss out.

actually it wd make a great heist movie. the cup has to travel overland due to volcanic particles risking the plane falling frm the sky and instead it gets hijacked and held to ransom and eventually we all discover the glacier was set off by a bomb and clive cussler helped with the plans

As a Football loving Aucklander, I have supported Wellington as the home of NZ Football and backed the qualifier being played their to the hilt as I would rather travel to somewhere where it would be done well.

In this case the argument is slightly negated by the fact that only 500 people can see the trophy personally (which is the real tragedy here) Even though the Knights crowds where abysmal, they at least served to prove that we can muster more than 500 genuine Football fans (heck I'd love to know the actual numbers of Aucklanders that travelled to Wellington for the qualifier and nix playoff games) so in this case demand will exceed the (pitiful) supply. In fact, Auckland will have to work dam hard for this one to flop

Anyway, the point I am getting to is that the limited public access proves that this is a glorified press junket, not a chance for the people to connect with the cup. 500 in that case is a good number for that purpose, the event will always look busy but not too big to manage and 500 should provide the right assortment of mixed races/ ages/ etc for the montages/ photo galleries.

Since Auckland is where the bulk of the nation's media is situated, it is the best city for the cup to be based in for the trip to successfully complete it's mission of buying an extra newspaper column and another minute and a half on the news.

You can argue until you're blue in the face who deserves it the most but unless they change the motivation behind the visit I think that whoever chose the location has it right in this case.

To be honest the fairest way to have done this was for the first 500 in attendance to be there.

Hype up the event with huge long queues of people, disappointed (real) fans.

I for one would have seriously considered flying up and queued a day in advance for this.

Would have been fun to brave a night in Auckland with some of you guys.

This just really stinks.

Wonder if they will get loads of entries? competition closes at midnight 22nd of April (Thursday).

woohoo!  off to see the trophy!

Upon arriving at the SKYCITY Convention Centre you will have the chance to relive the All Whites journey to the tournament and meet current All Whites and wish them luck for South Africa. You will then have the opportunity to get up close with the actual FIFA World Cup and have a personalised photo taken.

Same, I didn't know there was a player meet involved. My mate won tickets and invited me along so I haven't seen the details yet.

Apparently he finds out times etc on Monday.

Hopefully I haven't counted my chickens and I don't find out that not all the competitions for seeing the cup include the meet and greet.joachim2010-04-24 11:09:47

my tickets were through the NZ Herald competition - received a notification email on Friday, and the tickets via courier on Saturday.

I've got the 2.30 to 3.15pm time slot, so looks like I'll be having a "meeting" on Tuesday afternoon...

very much like me hoping for the bus competition, not that I can make the world cup with exams.... Trust me though if I win that I'm sure exams can wait a year.

Yes, it will be a room full of suits, little kids and ignorant meda.
But I couldn't give a toss because I'm going to see the great trophy and all those other t**sers don't count.
I'll bring back a photo.
And it won't be of Hayley Holt.

The fine line will probably say that the conditions for the winner is not to sell the car until after six months later . . .

But if you get a bank loan and then sell the car later to compensate, there that may be the only real way around that.AllWhitebelievr2010-04-27 01:27:57

Why do they have clauses to prevent you from selling? It's a prize and up to you to do what you want with it surely :)

Man I'm going to sound like I just whinge and moan (which I do, admittedly, but I also am quick to heap praise where it is due).

Honestly the ONLY place I've read/seen any information about this trophy, both in the leadup and on the day itself, is from Yellow Fever/forums.

Either I'm reading and listening to the wrong media, the media just don't give football the spotlight, or football promotion in New Zealand is arse.

Not surprisng from the Herald (they were involved in the competition).

But what's the point of reporting the "hype" on the day of when it's already too late to get involved?

NZ knows about rugby events weeks in advance.

Did Coca-Cola have any TV spots to accompany this tour?

If not that is surprising given that the ads tend to sell Coke "explicitly" rather than being a football ad with Coke on the side.

They will be happy to hear that I know that Coke now comes in a new 430ml bottle though!!

It may have just been me but I read about it plenty beforehand and you say we hear about rugby events weeks before hand. The William Webb Ellis trophy was in Wellington at the train station this morning, I work for an organisation where it could be reasonably expected I would know about that yet first thing I saw was in the paper this morning.
