a relatively easy World Cup group that we barely managed to scrape through to the second round BUT then get thumped by Australia 7-0

OR finish the World Cup with no wins and 3 goals conceded with 0 points?

Thats a bloody good question. Id go with qualifying for the 2nd round. But being smashed by Aus 7-0 will be seen very negatively by people and that may outweigh the positivity of making the next round.

Incidentally it's a question that could/should have been asked in the WC opponents thread.  We've let this place run post game but there are forum rules that will be enforced again soon.

They rarely score goals away from home so dont expect them to be chasing any golden boots. But yip 2nd round is pretty easily the better option

I'm aware they wouldn't beat us 7-0 right now (well, anything happens with football). I picked Australia because they're our rivals and we'd never live it down.

But also using that logic it's quite unlikely we'll qualify to the second round either. It's a purely hypothetical situation

Funny you say that, since Oz's move to the AFC, they've been trying to build up our 'rivalry' with Japan, Iran and Co.

Being in different Confederations has changed the Aus/NZ landscape a bit. To be fair, I'd say that NZ should just concentrate on its team and not worry what Australia are doing.
