New Zealand Football: ASB Premiership draw confirmed
October 21, 2013
AUCKLAND – The draw for the 2013/14 ASB Premiership launching on November 10 has been confirmed.

New Zealand Football (NZF) Competitions Manager Chris Kemp believes the tenth season of the ASB Premiership promises to be the most closely contested yet.

"The ASB Premiership is an important vehicle for player development and elite club competition and we're satisfied the tenth edition is going to be one to watch.

"There have been no less than 29 All Whites play in this competition since it was launched in 2004 and we may yet see a 30th selected this season," he said.

The league opens with defending champions Waitakere United travelling away to Southern United, the new name of the Otago United franchise, while another club with a facelift - WaiBOP United - welcome Canterbury United to Rotorua International Stadium.

But the feature match of the round sees Team Wellington host Auckland City. The capital men have recruited wisely in the off-season with Cole Peverley signing with the Matt Calcott-coached club and face an Auckland City side readying itself for another tilt at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Wanderers SC takes the place of YoungHeart Manawatu in the competition and is a vehicle for the Junior All Whites as they prepare for the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.

Wanderers SC has a brand new logo, playing kit and is coached by former Waitakere United assistant coach Darren Bazeley but won't be in ASB Premiership action until the conclusion of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE.

Wanderers SC provides players eligible for international selection for the Junior All Whites an opportunity for regular competitive action leading into 2015.

Canterbury United travel to Auckland on November 16 to face Wanderers SC in its ASB Premiership debut.

Hawke's Bay United start their season on the same weekend when they face Southern United at Bluewater Stadium.

The Bay have been active in the transfer market signing All Whites defender/midfielder David Mulligan.

As for the last three seasons, the ASB Premiership will be contested over two full rounds with two-legged semi-finals and a one-off grand final on March 16.

Waitakere and Auckland will again fight on two fronts also representing New Zealand in the 2014 OFC Champions League with an eye on qualifying for the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.

The traditional season opener, the ASB Charity Cup, is scheduled for Sunday 3 November, when grand final winners, Waitakere United, take on Auckland City, last season's runners-up, at Fred Taylor Park.

Waitakere United won last season's Charity Cup defeating Auckland City 2-1.

The league kicks off on the weekend of November 10.

SC???? Whats SC stand for? Considering they market themselves 'The name of the local game' you'd hope it does not stand for Soccer Club.

I have it on good authority (heard it from Cordwainer Bull) that the SC in Wanderers SC stands for "Special Circumstances".

It's a subtle nod to the anarchist utopian works of author Iain M. Banks.

For those not so erudite, Special Circumstances is a covert organisation with a morally ambiguous role best explained by Diziet Sma: "... in Special Circumstances we deal in the moral equivalent of black holes, where the normal laws—the rules of right and wrong that people imagine apply everywhere else in the universe—break down; beyond those metaphysical event-horizons, there exist ... special circumstances... That's us. That's our territory; our domain."

Brilliant. Respect to NZF.

Why?

2 home games when the Phoenix are playing elsewhere in NZ, as well as the games at Westpac which clash with drinking at the Bencher. I know that's not a great attitude, but I just don't believe curtain rasiers are necessary in football and part of the whole game day experience is the atmosphere at the Backbencher.

Pretty excited to be able to make more games this season, as I don't generally work on Sundays as I have in other seasons.

Am with Marshy, not so keen on curtain raisers, and don't really fancy spending 3-4 hours at the stadium. So that's a shame, though I understand the television coverage potential (and will be keenly watching at the pub if it is on tv).

I enjoy the ASBP (as much as the knitting circle are going to narrow mindedly say that clearly I don't) but when two of my Wellington teams clash, I'll watch the professional one that more of my mates are at, over the amateur one from Miramar. Would prefer to be able to watch both, but such is life.

I've always thoght they should alternate home games with the Phoenix. So you'd get Nix home game one weekend, Tee Dubs home game the next.

That may not suit Auckland City.

Alternating the draw with Phoenix quite possible.   Perhaps no one asked for it or thought of it

It's happened (possibly by accident) in previous seasons.

There is also some appeal in watching the Fever turn up desperately hungover for a Sunday game after the Phoenix play on a Saturday night.

NZF would never think of that and ACFC would cry foul at favouritism...

It is a bloody common sense move. You would think if it could ever be arranged, that the players not travelling would be able to be loaned to TW (yes its not possible) to play the home games similarly to Warriors/Vulcans arrangement.

I do like this new concept of having every home game in Wellington though. Be interesting to see how that works out.
