Today I witnessed along with another 1500 or so fans one of the worst Auckland City teams put out along with one of the worst performances that I have seen in a while.

ACFC

Spoonley - 5:  Made the standard saves that he should have made of shots from outside the box, however, he should have came of his line for the Pearce goal.  I'd expect more from NZ's number 3

Hogg - 7:  Best of the back four.  Made tackles when he had to and kept the ball the majority of the time.

Campbell - 3:  One word... WOEFUL!  He did not keep the ball at all offensively and could not connect a single pass.  At times Mulligan would show short for the ball, but he decided just to pump it long to Waitakere.  Defensively he gave away too many fouls and is so far out of his depth at this level it is not funny.

Edgington - 4:  Only slightly better than campbell.  Reasons are 1.  Scored 1. and 2 won balls aerially at the back.  Apart from that he was the exact same as Campbell

Pritchett - 4:  Got roasted all day from Devries and it appeared that Waitak focused on attacking him as the weakness of the back four.  As a captain I expect more leadership.

Mulligan - 5:  Fantastic service from dead balls.  However he was ineffective with his passing and was looking to play long far too often.

Corrales - 6:  Looked threatning when he ran at players on  occassion and had some very good footwork in the corners.  In saying that he did not get involved enough and the Waitkere defenders took care of him relitively well

Feneredis - 3:  Won the odd ball in the air but did not appear to want to get involved at all and was a ghost in the midfield.  Have no idea why ACFC continually put him in the team let alone the squad.

McGeorge - 4:  Didnt do much today either and didnt get on the ball.  When he did though he did ok.

Thomas - 5:  Was used as a scape goat i think by the coaching staff as was dragged early in the 2nd half but did ok

Koprivcic - 2:  Did not get the ball or get involved the entire game.

Subs

Dickinson - 5:  Tried hard
Avendano - 3:  Ineffective

Waitakere

Robinson - 8:  Apart from the goal was very solid and put a stamp on the position of number 1 at Waitak

Rowley - 8:  Solid at the back and gave nothing away

Scott - 7:  Did well against Corrales and dealt with him well the majority of the time

Myers - 8:  Same as Rowley

Pelter - 8:  Commanding presence and always tried to play positively

Bullock - 6.5:  Kept the ball regularly however he now looks a little bit passed it

Bale - 6:  Did not really get involved offensively but did nothing major wrong

Pearce - 6:  Apart from the goal did not do much.  He did not run at players enough as that is his strength as a player

Krishna - 7.5:  Did very well and looked strong.  Creative and too skillful for the ACFC defenders. He will be waitak's best attacking weapon this year and looked dangerous every time he touched the ball

De Vries - 8:  2 very well taken goals and will be giving Pritchett nightmares until next week when he will probably do the same to him again.  Does look a bit soft at times and was waiting for an Auckland player to go through him as this usually shuts him up but they didnt.

Subs:

Butler - 5:  Did ok - lost a lot of weight.  Kept the ball for the team
Gwyther - 5:  Lots of energy and wanted to play with the ball on the ground
Lovemore - 4:  Not enough time but looked like he is a hard worker

Yip makes me laugh take off Thomas when he at least was contributing, others so called high profile, as average as normal and left on too see how they go, ...more like make sure egos arent bruised, Auckland 2nd best how they will be all season if they play like that - well done waitak

I don't think anyone in Canterbury rates Spoonley as NZ's 3, that is unless you rate him ahead of Paston or Moss.

Talked to a few people at the game and the majority think that AC are going to struggle to score this year.  They have scored 4 goals in the league this year - all of dead balls.  With three of them coming from mulligan (2g, 1a) then what will they do if he is injured.

Also I do not think that De Vries is all that he is talked up to be - he has great footwork but is far too soft.  He listen's too much to his old man and his old man's mates.  If he is going to do anything in football (and i hope he does) he has to lift his work rate and be 'harder' on and off the ball.  He has a reputation of if he is kicked early doors he will go hiding.

Waitakere looking good though

He's really young though, give him some time to get some experience and harden up a bit. Work rate and going missing, yeah, fair call. But he can play.

Can someone please tell me how feneridis continually gets a game?  the kid is off the pace in the winter league - let alone the summer!

Auckland were woeful. Poor players on the pitch and couldnt get away with it this week against a decent team.

Centre Backs woeful and i said this in another thread prior to the game.

Thomas - even his biggest fans will probably now admit hes off the pace.

Spoonley was awful in his decision makings led to confusion and 2 goals.

Federidis - has he ever had a good game for City? Politics involved.

The Chilean i dont think will be on the pitch again this season, out of his depth.

Danko people are saying is well past his best but i believe maybe give him a bit more time to prove this idea wrong.

Waitakere just took their chance and Robinson was great in goal.

Corrales and Hogg got man of match for City and Waitakere gave it to the team.

I think if you look at the quality players Auckland City had in the first 3 seasons of the NZFC you will see a massive difference to what is being rolled out now.  In those first seasons Auckland were made up of the best of the best nowdays I think several winter league sides would give them a run for their money.

I see on the website there was no Stu Kelly. Whats his story? He was touted as a big signing...

Grumpy old bastard alert

Not another paddy throwing and walking away surely? We had 3 seasons of that in Canty...

I let my guitar speak for me

I saw Stu Kelly standing on the sideline looking a little podgey... if he is being talked up as being a good signing then the city team is in trouble.

I think that there could have been a better squad put out from the players that were watching the game than what City put out.  I saw the three Mathews there along with Stu Hogg, mitch healy and you could throw Tris Clark in goal.  Makings of a far better side than what ACFC had.

Is there a reason that you forgot to rate Zane Sole??? Since you forgot I will rate him for you.

Z. Sole: 20. You may ask yourself "why would the clunge be rating him as a 20? He wasn't even that good in the weekend was he?" No he wasnt that good. The rating is for the amount of weight he needs to lose (kgs) before he takes a step onto a national league field!!!

Id say between 15-20 kgs...that lad was certainly carrying a bit. Lucky Citys midfield were just as awful on the day. But i dont think you have to be overly fit these days. The playing standard has dropped since the early years.

Also why do nz soccer not give the best referee the job for an Auckland derby?! For once in my life i agrred with terry madaford in the herald when he said the referee tried his best to ruin the game. Ive said it before Chris Kerr is just deadset out of his best and the funny thing is he thinks hes bigger than the players and the game itself. (im not talking in terms of weight i mean attitude). I hope NZ football can adress this so  both the fans and the players can injoy a good game next time.
