What about pride in representing your country and club in a prestigious international tournament when you're a highly paid professional to begin with. That should count for nothing? No side has ever threatened this before, it's ridiculous. What's the average player at WSW getting anyway - A$250,000 a year (plus Asian Cup bonus). Maybe only getting 10% of the CWC prize-money isn't generous by the club, but threatening to walk out is like Ashley Cole bleating because he was only offered 120,000 quid a week and others were getting more at Chelsea. In perspective it looks terrible.
Money should not be the sole barometer of everything and I can assure you it's not for the ACFC players going to the CWC. By the way the club hands nearly half of its winnings to other ASBP sides and NZF. It's not being the twit, but there you go.
I know WSW get some extra concessions from the FFA, but that would be twice the salary cap.

Very much looking forward to seeing the games on Sky TV this week in NZ. It was outstanding that Auckland City drew last week in a friendly with the Uzbekistan national team - ranked fourth best in Asia after Iran, Japan & South Korea - and ahead of Australia.
Uzbekistan started with several second choice players but put on many first choice players from the 52nd minute onwards in an attempt to win the game. Sounds from the detailed match thread as though Auckland indeed played very well:

Or ACFC beat the Moroccan team, lose to the African team and WSW lose to Cruz Azul. Then they would playoff for 5th/6th. And ACFC would finally get a shot at that 5th place crown again.

The $20,000+ payment to players quoted was when ACFC won two games at the CWC in 2009 and got a double payment. If ACFC get to keep about 50% of its O league winnings, that makes it about $350,000. If 40% of that goes to the players (the rest goes to cover club costs to competing in the O League) that's about $150,000 which distributed amongst the squad would come to about $6-$8,000 each. So yes, for all the time and effort they put in, they're not there largely to line their pockets. But hey, don't let a bit of reality interfere if you're having fun.
As a Cantabrian, I'm a neutral when it comes to Auckland vs. Wellington arguments such as on this forum thread.
We have a tendency in most sports down here to especially not be big chums of Aucklanders (Wellington have never won many national comps in football, rugby or cricket compared to Canterbury so we historically don't mind them as much perhaps) .
But I'm a fan of both the Phoenix in the A-League and Auckland City in the Club World Cup.
I was born in Auckland but have lived in the South Island since aged five. My parents always had lots of friends in Auckland and we used to visit regularly as kids. So I don't buy into any anti-Auckland stuff really when my local Cantabs become boorish in pubs...
One thing that I find interesting that is not widely known is that apparently Auckland City actually lose money on competing in the Club World Cup because they don't have enough left after paying the ASB Premiership clubs, their players etc. to meet Club World cup expenses:

"Under the rules of NZ Football I don't know how that can change, but it's definitely not an advantage going there. The club that goes is at a serious disadvantage.
"We got $1.5 million the year when we won two games. But three of the four times we have come back with big minuses."
although doing the math there it seems they're up $1.2million overall thanks to that 5th place finish.

Can think of no good reason to doubt Ivan's numbers.

Not if it's a profit sharing % rather than fixed amount. Personally, I think Akl should not come away out of pocket but other than that I'm happy it is shared amongst the clubs. Benefits the whole league. Not sure if NZF are filtering off any elsewhere.
The simple answer then is that if this is such the loss making exercise and such a hardship for you that you need to moan how it makes everyone else richer but your lot poorer, don't compete and go for it! Honestly you see where the ACFC fans get it from.

Spectators are about as far as it is possible to get from the field but at least it's virtually impossible to throw objects onto the pitch.
With no Chinese team participating this year, there shouldn't be the problem with lasers being directed at players that was a sad part of last year's tournament from Guangzhou Evergrande supporters (and as witnessed in the All Whites match vs.China recently).
