To be fair, people on the forums here went crazy when the Aussie commentators used to refer to us as New Zealand Phoenix or the team from New Zealand rather than Wellington.

They were talking about it on the radio saying they were all sent an update as well and that its not wise to alienate the media.

The club could have worded it a bit less antagonistically.

John Helm, the TV commentator supplied by FIFA sometimes said "Western Sydney Warriors"

But then Helm is 72 and well past it. No excuse for getting basics like that wrong though - no excuse for FIFA employing such a dinosaur either.

Cheapskate TV companies like Sky in NZ take the FIFA feed rather than provide their own commentary to the pictures as more developed football nations do.

To be honest, the sports "media" in this country are generally pretty mediocre and uninformed about everything except rugby.

People would massively ridicule any media person who got the name of a rugby side wrong.

If the poor darlings feel "alienated" then they should stick their nose out of thier rugby mud pool occasionally.

Yeah though you didn't see the official nix account sending a petulant tweet etc about it. I cringed when I saw ACFCs tweet.

Auckland City don't have a show of winning in the team category of the Halbergs against the six rowing "teams", the All Blacks, Warriors, the croquet team etc.

Many of these rowing "teams" are two person.

Similarly, Ivan in the sportsman category up against Richie McCaw, Shaun Johnson, Brendon McCullum and Steven Adams.

Still, being nominated is nice recognition.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/64409079/auc...

You can vote in January for "Favourite Sporting Moment" here (but I bet it won't have a football one as an option):

http://www.halbergawards.co.nz/nzs-favourite-sport...

I see Wynton Rufer was nominated for Sportsman in 1991 and 1992 and the NZ Women's Football team in 1992:

http://www.halberg.co.nz/about-the-awards/archive

There are no records for several years on the website - were there no awards held some years?

e.g. for 1993 when Wynton won the Bundesliga and was one of the top Bundesliga goal-scorers - no record of any awards held.

1994: When Wynton was joint top goal-scorer in the UEFA Champions League  -no record of any awards.

They probably didn't want soccer to win anything so canned the whole idea. Remember the stink that was kicked off when AWs won Team of the Year after the world cup? haha

That was not a dig at your club 'tard. In fact I think it's rather shameful. Yeah we'll give you a civic reception, at 5pm Sunday after the game when everyone is leaving. That to me, lacks respect.

True, but do you remember the stink the rugby and other sporting communities created after it was given to them.

Still angry about this. Adam Parore, that rowing wanker Drysdale (fairly sure that's a high participation sport, not!) and plenty of others...

Ramon now nominated for "Coach of the Year" after the Halbergs people realized he is a NZ resident and so eligible.

Quite right too if someone like Ramon shows that sort of commitment to NZ to stick around so long and want to live here.

https://nz.sports.yahoo.com/news/article/-/2584542...

"Another late nomination for the Halberg Awards following Auckland City's feats at the Club World Cup.

Ramon Tribulietx will now be considered for the coach of the year award.

After consultation with New Zealand Football and Auckland City, the Halberg Trust has been able to confirm that Tribulietx is eligible for the award, as he is a New Zealand resident.

Auckland City's achievement means judges will now re-cast their votes for coach of the year, team of the year and sportsman of the year."

To be fair to the Council and all concerned, it's a difficult time of year to organize anything over the Xmas and New Year holiday period with city councillors etc. away on holiday.

Auckland City players and officials would be away on holiday too - some perhaps overseas to be with family over the ASB Premiership break until 10 January.

Auckland City have their next home match January 10 but I'm guessing it mustn't have been possible to get council officials etc. along then, so they arranged it for the next home match on January 25.

A reception this week before Xmas (Tuesday or Wednesday) you'd think would have been preferable while the news of Auckland's achievements is a hot item.

Still, I'm sure Auckland City will get bumper crowds when the ASB Premiership resumes and true fans will stick around for the reception.

If it was Canterbury United instead, I'm sure a lot of us would stick around after the game to honour the team.

Another reason for the timing of Jan 25 is that it's the 175th Auckland Anniversary Weekend.

BTW, Peter, Auckland's next home game is on the 11th, not the 10th.

Cheers,

JR

Why does John Helm sound like a School teacher talking to 7 year olds during his commentaries?

That's understandable with no UK clubs involved.

I get the impression that the tournament isn't respected much in the UK either.

Different story in other European and in Latin American countries - especially Spanish-speaking countries where the TV networks used their own commentators.

There are of course many more Spanish-speakers who are football fans (about 415 million people have Spanish as their first language) than English speakers (of the 335 million who have English as their first language, the vast majority live in the USA and don't follow football so much).

Here's the full Auckland City vs. Lorenzo game from Fox Sports Latin America on You Tube with their own commentators:

Also, I saw in the news that coach Ramon didn't return to Auckland with the team but went to Spain to spend Xmas with family, so I guess he won't be back until the first week of January to prepare the team for the game on the 11th..

And you can't have a reception without the coach there.

Be interesting to see how many people turn out for Auckland's next home game on the 11th.

Canterbury Utd had about 780 at the last home game compared to about 400 at the previous one.

It is largely Fantasy land that a player will get plucked from obscurity at these Tournaments. probably aside from Winston Reid, and even then he was playing at a reasonable level in Denmark.

Even U17 world cups it very rarely happens.
