I hope their Club World Cup squad heavily resembles their National League squad for next year

I kind of get why Gillion and Howieson being loaned back temporarily makes some sense as they at least helped ACFC qualify but I'd hate this to become a sort of 'Players plying their trade in New Zealand Invitational 11' - It feels a bit like gaming the system to bring in players who have no intention of staying on after the Club World Cup. I kinda feel that I would like it to be legitimately Auckland City competing at the tournament as they did legitimately qualify.

I don't think it really matters if they get well beaten or not, it's just a true reflection of the fact that OFC clubs are amateur - no point pretending to be something you're not.

I get what you are saying and it all makes sense. But i think if they can make their team stronger then why not.  It's professional sport, so the best players available to you should be picked.

I'd rather watch them give it a go. Than defending like Samoa vs the all whites.

Not really Auckland City any more if they go and sign half a dozen pros just to become slightly more competitive.

Takes the piss out of them being there in the first place, and the entire qualification process.

ACFC has already set a precedent in this. They have had loads of short term signings for the CWC in the past.

Eg: CWC 2014.

What did they do for that again?

If by that statement you mean "excelled" then yes I agree. My point is the NZ and PI sides at the CWC have already set a precedent of bringing in pro ring-ins for the comp. So no surprises if ACFC do it next year.

In fact, given I plan to go to these games, I want Oceania's top team to do well and not get spanked every CWC game next year.

Nah literally I am trying to remember who they got, their status, length of their stay, and  how it worked with transfer windows

They are not names, however, that are likely to resonate with their opponents, international media or the Japanese public. Auckland will be more curiosity factor than a factor.

They guaranteed some coverage, though,
when they signed former the Japan midfielder and celebrity Teruo Iwamoto on a short-term contract for the Club World Cup.

Iwamoto is likely to court most of the attention, and his new team-mates were given a taste of it when a handful of
Japanese media travelled to Auckland for his NZFC debut.

Interesting to see Albert Riera taking a year off coaching and to be replaced by Paul Posa for the upcoming season

MILLIONS OF FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP MONEY COMING TO OFC & NZ CLUBS

New Zealand to benefit from $1.73 billion prizemoney at FIFA Club World Cup - Friends of Football

Millions of the $NZ 1.73 billion revenue from the Club World Cup will go to NZ and Oceania representative Auckland City and to club football in NZ and Oceania generally.
“All revenue generated by the tournament will be distributed to the participating clubs and via club solidarity across the world as FIFA will not keep a single dollar."

Mexican side Leon ejected from the Club World Cup due to breaching the tournament's rules on multi-club ownership by sharing the same owner as another Club World Cup side, Pachuca:

  • Chelsea will face Flamengo of Brazil and Tunisia's Esperance de Tunis in Group D
  • But Mexico's Club Leon must now be replaced following their removal by FIFA

Transfer window about to open, who are ACFC getting in for the CWC?
31 May 02:47
Gillion & Howieson two obvious targets if Auckland FC agree.
Both should be relatively fresh, as only bit players really in the ALM season. Both ex ACFC.

Skipo Ukich another ex City player, if his Croatian club Istra agree on a short term deal.
31 May 02:55
Rojas if fit?

Auckland will rise once more

Riera has got a coaching gig in Vanuatu.
Presumably Galaxy are going to be in the new OFC Pro League.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360708842/auckland-city-leave-fifa-club-world-cup-without-coach-due-personal-circumstances

Posa was appointed as City's coach for 2025 in January, replacing Albert Riera, who was said by chairman Ivan Vuksich to have "neither resigned nor been dismissed“, but to be focusing on developing as coach and spending time with his family.

While his step back was described as a temporary one when it was announced, Riera was this week unveiled as the new coach of Vanuatu club Galaxy FC.

Man Auckland will be happy to keep these games anywhere close to 5/6 goals against..  tough draw for anyone!
04 Jun 02:06
Feels like it's going to be a bit of an inglorious final CWC for Auckland City.

Could be some ugly scorelines, depending on how serious the other clubs take it - especially being so close to the June International FIFA window.

Still it's a very nice financial windfill for Kiwitea St.

And will we just see Auckland Football Conglomeration FC just be Central/ACFC version III and into the new OFC Pro League? So meaning an iteration of ACFC could still feature at future FIFA events. Ivan Vuksich seems a common thread.

It's a bit stupid really...   You have an amateur side against some of the best clubs in the world. What is that going to prove?
04 Jun 06:55
Well.... what does any football game prove?

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

04 Jun 21:54
Reckon it should be fun watching ACFC lads have a hit out with some heavyweights. Bucket list stuff for some of the team I'd imagine.

It may not prove anything but to my mind any comp that makes football just a little less euro centric is a good thing.

Aside from Auckland there are some banging matchup for the tourny that is usually only the sort of thing you see selecting random teams in FIFA. Should be fun.

Knew it'd be against their second team, but a good confidence boost nonetheless given MLSNP teams are still fully professional (albeit laden with lads in the 18-23 age range).

Results like this help show us all how decent our national league is. I wish them luck the next few weeks!

The MLS Next Pro comp (MLS reserve teams) is a massive level below the MLS.

Still early days as a reserve team league (only into it's 4th season), but at the moment you ain't getting that many guys progressing up to senior MLS squads.

The MLS doesn't have a max 5 visa player rule like the ALM. Scouting from Latin America and even Europe, Africa, the ALM is still the major source of new talent. Some teams start with very few Americans or Canadians. Inter Miami have just 3 Americanos in their entire 23 man squad!

To be honest I would be disappointed if ACFC with it's number of very experienced CWC stalwarts didn't beat an MLS youth team.

The Club World Cup has become a personal project of Fifa President Gianni Infantino, who has built close ties since 2018 to Saudi Arabia and its Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the chairman of PIF.

Doesn’t sound like fertile ground for conflicts of interest at all, even with a few billion sloshing around. After all FIFA surely has rock-solid governance processes in place to keep everything squeaky clean.

ACFC's next football game, Bayern Munich.

10 Jun 03:20 · edited 10 Jun 03:21 · History
Sorry next game for the ACFC 1st choice XI.

One deals with Harry Kane, the other with some Argentinian backpacker.
10 Jun 12:18
Its difficult to think of anything other than a thrashing playing Bayern. But City have been in these situations before and have done OK.
10 Jun 21:18
Anything under 6 goals I think you'd take. Probably likely that Bayern blow out to a decent lead then give their stars some rest.

They’ve never played anyone remotely as strong as Bayern Munich though.

Three for me, and two for them.

I imagine BM will play a weakened side as there will be no need for the big guns who are nodoubt gagging for a holiday.

This I expect a better result here them most are giving AFC credit for. It will likely still be a loss but certainly not by a rugby/cricket score.
