Thanks Luis - this weekend should be a good test for newly soaring Falcons - DF park, Vs Welli. I pick a 2-1 win to the birds....

I'm going to say 2-1 to TW.

Hearing some, shall we say, "less than positive" comments re Cantab possession football style of play as dictated by Danny Halligan. Somewhat reminiscent of Waikato/Edge discussion. Comments?

What discussion needs be had??? All under 19 teams must be assessed on their ability to confidently  construct passages of possession football when appropriate.  If our under 19 teams dont have this as a performance measure - we are are freaking doomed as a footballing country.  Having said that - there was not much evidence of "possession football" from Canty in their two all draw with Nelson Falcons.....

I'm thinking the youth game is Sunday, but could be wrong??

Yes the style of 2013 is a little disappointing after the positive style of the CU Academy on recent seasons under allan Walker, when the team looked to get forward when they had the ball, now we seem to be happy to play backward when the ball get over the halfway line. With two home games in the coming week, YH Manawatu on Waitangi Day and then the Nelson Falcons on the Sunday 10th if we do not pickup all six points, and this looks to be an impossible task on what we have seen so far, the season will be over.

The loser of the weekend's Nelson vs Canterbury game will pretty much  be out of contention. Manawatu should be a walk in the park.

So AW82, based on your experience, what's your personal view on how this crop of lads are doing - or will that depend  on results of next 2 games? I know over half the squad are considered to be "Danny's boys". I guess my real question is two-fold; 1) is Danny developing these boys to become better all-rounded players who can kick on to higher levels? How is he going on this key task, as surely that is the only priority for the CU coach? 2) what is the quality and potential of this lot compared to previous years?

Only just remembered the baby dragons game - dang.

Can't say I'm overly impressed with the squad this year tbh. From what I've seen its a step down from last years team.

Nelson Falcons lose 2-1 to Canterbury after leading 1-0 at half time with just ten men. So that's the Falcons' season gone..

and Otago defeated YH Manawatu in Dunedin so Canty go to the top of the Southern Conference but Team Welly have played on game less.

Think Northern U17's easily defeated Waikato, 4-0 I heard.

That sucks Luis.  Who got sent? What for etc? Result aside, I think you could call Nelson's first foray into ASB Youth League a solid success (results, actual quality football, squad depth, crowds, organisation...)

Hal Fish got sent early on for a studs up challenge. Sam Maxwell scored the goal for Nelson.

Yeah I think Nelson would be wise to remain in the ASB Youth League and not try get a senior team for the next few years because it would severely weaken the young side.

Yup , I think a little bit of patience is wise too.   Senior Nelson ASB team does seem very likely based on the effort on and off the field with the youth team but seniors need to be rock solid sustainable and competetive like youngheart.   I've really enjoyed watching the falcons and the crew behind them too.

Drove to Taupo and back for the Waikato FC vs Hawkes Bay ASBYL game yesterday. Yes - I'm quite mad.

You going to Auck City YL v NZ U-17 2moro Enzo? And if so, are you interviewing? Some interesting candidates on show.

Can't unfortunately... Pity, it will be an interesting game. Looking forward to the semis though!

Does it go to the semis? I thought I heard somewhere that it goes straight to the final.

Saw the first 45 of TW yoof and Canterbury, very average half of football unfortunately.

 Straight final.

Auck City Yoof 3 Northern NZ U-17 2. Excellent game. Lots of passionate, direct footy.

Looks like Auck v Canty final.

The southern conference is still tight canterbury, wellington, nelson and otago could make the final

Permalink Permalink

no they can't. Team Welly and Nelson can't reach Canterbury.

Permalink Permalink

By my count, it's pretty simple for Otago. Win last 2 games, make the final. Simple as that. Canty won't be easy based on what I saw of them down here, but Otago weren't far off and it's certainly winnable.

Nelson drawing 1-1 with Manawatu is slightly embarrasing. First half of the season and Nelson looked for all money to challenge for the top spot. That loss to Canterbury was the turning point.
