AUCKLAND CITY UNVEIL SQUAD -->

October 2, 2007

AUCKLAND- Three-times champion Auckland City FC have unveiled the squad to defend their New Zealand Football Championship title for the 2007/08 season.

Republic of Korea international Ki-Hyung Lee is the most notable addition this season, although head coach Colin Tuaa has managed to attract a few other new players with representative honours.

Solomon Islands striker Henry Faarodo makes the move north from Canterbury United while Faarodos international teammate George Suri is one of four players signed from Waitakere United.

Waitakere also lose All White Jeff Campbell, New Zealand A player Craig Wylie, and ex-All White Rupesh Puna to their NZFC and O-League rivals.

Three current All Whites Campbell, Ben Sigmund and James Pritchett are included in the squad along with three others Wylie, Joel Mathews, and Sam Mathews who featured for New Zealand A against Fiji and now-Auckland-teammate Salesh Kumar in August.

New Zealand U-17 representatives Lance Heslop and Jake Mathews younger brother of Joel and Sam are two of five academy players to make the step up to the NZFC.

Auckland City begin their NZFC campaign away to Younghert Manawatu on November 4 while their first O-League match is at home to Tahiti's AS Manu Ura on October 27.

That match and Aucklands first four NZFC matches will not be played at Kiwitea Street, but at the Croatian Cultural Society in McLeod Road, Henderson while their Kiwitea home is re-surfaced.

Strong NZFC side, wouldn't beat a good A-League side like the Phoenix though.

Most of the locals didn't make the Phoenix squad and the star import addition trialled with the Phoenix and didn't make the grade.

Should be well up the NZFC laddder again though.

It's good to see the NZFC gaining in strength.

Hopefully crowds will start to improve too. Be nice if YF had a subsidiary Team Wellington group too. A hundred or so singing YF boys would help TW out a lot I'm sure.

Whose TW, YHM, Canterbury and Waitakere signed up this year? Any big marquee players from offshore? All seems very quiet out there? Auckland as usual seems to be charging along preseason but the others seem anonymous, whats happening in the NZFC?

Manawatu have announced most of the squad, including two Fijians, a Uruguayan and a couple of Solomon Islanders.

Waitak have signed most of your side from last year and Totori.

Hawkes Bay are listed in another thread here, quite a few U-20 squad members.

Otago are filling up with US-League players

Waikato are signing anyone with a UK passport.

TW and Canterbury have been pretty quiet.

Funny, but not really true. Waikato's non NZ players are Rob Gill (UK), Dale Williams (UK), Luke Findley (UK), Dan Robinson (though he will have residency) Boomer Kotchin (US) and a bald-headed Yank. For all that, there most influential players may all be kiwi: Che Bunce, Matt Williams, and Steven Holloway. Everyone knows Bunce, Williams is highly respected around the waikato - he's about 30 - and is a lively midfielder while holloway (22) is a gamebreaker and would be much better known by now if he hadn't spent the last four years overseas. I also meant to ask, I see all the MATHEWS boys in the Auckland squad, are any of them any good?

Jacob was pretty handy in the U-17 World Cup, Sam had a good reputation at US College,  and some reckon Joel is better than either of them.  An acquaintance says they have a younger sister who is better than any of them....

Don't forget Arron Scott in the Waikato sides list of influential players.

all 3 boys are good players but it will be interesting to see if they get much game time this year. wolfben's facts are wrong, jacob isnt trailing with aston villa . he should be startn right wing for city and joel should be starting a left back.

well you would say that wouldnt you. I reckon we'll win the league again and the O-league and manawatu will still have an empty cabinet.

yeah, there are some funny ones.  i think they list the country of birth.  robbie deeley is listed as england, liam mulrooney england, etc even though they have nz residency and have probably played here most of their lives.

i would assume then that shane smeltz would be listed as german if he played in the nzfc?
