Classic comment from someone who still supports a team even though they are full of Canty players.  You'd think he'd be cheering on the Canty A squad?!?!

Oh well, shame about the send off, didn't think it was that bad.

Cheers linds, great goal from Tom Lancaster, didn't look like a red card foul to me....

Agree welshbairn - ruined the spectacle unfortunately. As I said earlier, Sykes should have had a red if the Canterbury player deserved one

How was that not a red card to Dirou. Studs up in the thigh - hardly ball playing height now....

Didn't look intentional or even particularly reckless to me. Ball was bouncing and Dirou was going for the ball, no indication of deliberate intent to harm other player. I follow Scottish football and am a bit ignorant about kiwi refereeing culture, but if that decision was standard in the SPL we'd be down to 5 a side by the second half of your average game...

So because he was going for the ball and had no intent, we should just smack him on the hand and tell him he is a naughty boy? I wonder how Commins Menapi would have felt if that was the case when RVS flattened him.... No thats ok Ricki, you were going for the ball and that was your intent....

Every player always goes for the ball, doesn't mean its not worthy of more than a telling off now. If that doesn't get dealt with, we'd be down to 5 a side by the second half of your average game due to injury and players getting red carded for retaliation....

If there's no recklessness or intent then it's not even a foul, far less a yellow or red card. If his foot was at head height, it would have been dangerous play, but it wasn't...

Studs up and extended leg pushing at the ball at knee height or above is both reckless and dangerous when its in the direction of another player. Clear red.

Only saw the incident on the news as was watching chatham cup, so have no idea whether any other incident was better or worse.aitkenmike2010-04-25 01:05:52

Well if thats the benchmark then apparently I've yet to see a foul in a game of football yet

Riki on the receiving end DV, not the other way round as you state?!?!?!
Menapi red and ONLY a one match ban for...........brain fade. Worst football 'tackle' on youtube.
Waitakere have friends in ALL the right places don't we know.
Very disappointing for Canterbury who would have provided  better balance to the NZFC.
Just wasn't in NZF's script for Waitakere to represent Oceania this year and not be involved next. Perhaps if Braithwaite could lose his scouse accent Cant may get a fair go next year.

That was as clear-cut straight red as you're ever likely to see.

Sykes' yellow was also a good call.

Intent has absolutely nothing to do with foul play.

This incident consisted of a player using excessive force in a dangerous manner, which resulted in serious foul play. Red card.

Several points of view with Red card. I agree and said at the time of watching it was a red or he was going to be the luckiest player on the park.
A couple of people watching took the other view as both players failed to play the ball and should be only a yellow.
Case is when the whistle had gone well before Dirou made the lung why did he need to go full tilt for the ball?
A bit of brain fade.
Never going to be a Canterbury win from that point on, just a matter of time before the 24 degrees and extra running by each player told.

Looks like the Dragons will be curtain raisers for Nix v. Adelaide. Love it.

Yep. In order to keep it amateur, all Waikato FC players will be given jobs as cleaners at Waikato Stadium.

What's the deal with playing at Linfield park? Is it due to earthquake damage?

I haven't been to Linfield for a couple of years, but from memory, it was a crap surface, not worthy of club football let alone NZFC

Decision was made before the quake. English Park is having artificial turf installed so is unavailable for the first three home matches IIRC.

Well they timed that pretty miserably. Why not do it in the off-season?

Also, why not use QEII stadium? better pitch, better facilities. Canterbury Utd should've been based there from the start. Pouring that much money into the re-development of English park was a waste of rate-payers money.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/sport/4102092/Quake-could-close-season

"[Canterbury United chairman Craig] Rhodes said Canterbury had chosen the Linfield Park rugby ground because it had "a more footy-like atmosphere".

"It has the best playing surface," he said. "It is enclosed with a closer environment for spectators, creating a more footy-like atmosphere."

He said the Linfield administration had "a football focus" with Coastal Spirit Football Club one of a number of sports under the Linfield Trust umbrella.

"QE II is too big a stadium with the ground a long way from the stands and the [QE II No2 pitch] on the back ground is unavailable.

"Rugby League Park could not originally support us through the entire campaign and its facilities and amenities are under doubt, particularly in light of the recent earthquakes," Rhodes said."

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure no rate's money was used for English Park as it's not owned by the council. But like I said, I could be wrong.

New rule is that two youth players must be included the matchday 15.

Keith Braithwaite requested to speak to Nelson Suburbs players Adam Smith (18), Gagame Feni (18) and Richmond Athletic player Jordan Yong (19), formerly of Norwich academy, after the tech vs Suburbs game. Sounds like all three are likely to feature in the ASB Premiership at some stage this season.

I'm pretty sure money did come from the CCC for the new turf at English Park. And EP is the place for football in CHCH, perfect size and shape for the 300 people that go to these matches. QE2 pitch is 100 metres away from the closest fan in the stand and there isn't a lot of atmosphere in a 20,000 person stadium.

Linfield Park is a 100% rugby club so yes it will be interesting having it there, however probably a good surface and venue all things considered. Lovely bank for some summer-time beers and sun!

Linfield Park is the home of Linwood Rugby Club.
The pitch will need some TLC over the next six weeks or so but im sure LCRSC will do a good job in promoting the facilities they have there.

Linfield Cultural Recreational Sports Club is the administration base for at least six sports clubs including Coastal Spirit Football Club, Linwood Rugby Club, Richmond Keas Softball and other clubs involved in Hockey, Squash and Netball.

Keith Braithwaite maybe about to agree a 2year contract to coach Canterbury United and give up the WoolstonTech coaching position.
Would be good for both Canterbury and help Keith recharge the body and mind. I'm sure he will still be at a game every Saturday but with a bit less presure on him.
