Alan Walker - youth coach and Sean Devine - assistant coach.. Either of those would probably have first choice

Not based on the youth team's performances!

Sean Devine? Is this serious? Classic case of nutter in charge of the lunatic asylum but then considering he has had to learn from mental Mickey at Metro and then Keith.......

Haha. I saw him play for Barnet a coupla times, when he was probably at his peak - and Barnet is still well known for once being the home of London's largest and most notorious lunatic asylum!

Gotta laugh at the people pushing lee Padmore for dragons coach. Don't think he played at a high level & has coached kids and university level, plus just now selwyn's first team in the 2nd tier. Give him 5- 7 years coaching men and he might be worth a look then.

Yes nothing like having a successful coaching record at senior level to put on you CV. In the ASB all about winning and reaching the play-offs. In the past Canterbury United went down the path of using younger players rather and experienced senior players and the results spoke for them selves.

Over the years have asked many players why the want to play for sides that Keith, both the Mainland level and ASB level, has coached and all have said that Keith is one of the best man managers they have played for, wants to win every game and has a nack of building a team that can complete when they have a poor record in the past, i.e. turning Nomads around in the MPL - they had not won a game in two years and within two years Nomads had won the Mainland league and had 3rd 2nd and another title before moving on to oolston Technical and winning a couple of title there.

After Canty United finished rock bottom twice Keith took them to four play-off's out of five, with one Grand Final, but no O League play-off place.

I know Keith is not everyone's cup of tea but neither were the likes of Terry Conley, Alan Jones, Kevin Fallon, Ian Marshall etc, but they also wanted to win every game.

I have known Keith since he first arrived in NZ way back in 1982 - was not a bad player in his day - holds the record of the most goals in a game in the old National League, with 6 goals, and consider his a friend so my comments may be a littled cloud. but give me a winner anyday.

Whoever is the next Canty coach Keith and his team have set the bench mark over the last five years for other's to match and hopefully better in the coming season's.

i wonder if steve sumner ever fancies coaching again.  he could have been all whites boss if he really bothered i'm sure

i agree with what all whites 82 has said about braithwaite.  i used to enjoy watching him play in the national league for christchurch united, he was pure class.  in fact, that whole team was awesome for along time

So you put him on your list then slag off others.
Tom Saunders coached school aged kids for about 15 years didn't stop him being part of the best.
It's how good you are as a coach not the age of your players.

The list was what some people on here were saying. I don't know the fella from a bar of soap. I'm sure he's a good kids coach but he has nowhere near enough experience coaching senior footy to take on the canterbury united role.

Sad to see Keith Braithwaite depart the ASBP, he has been a great coach for Canterbury and a fine competitor. Hopefully his replacement will keep CU as title challengers as the competition needs it. Ian Marshall wouldn't be a bad pick.

Perhaps, but coaching kids is a lot easier than adults. Kids tend to listen and learn.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Keith went to the Canterbury United board/hierarchy and said to them to compete with Auckland City, Waitakere and to give us the best chance of getting into the O-League more $ would need to be spent on getting better players into the team. The board then promptly decreased his budget.....so Keith told them to get stuffed (or stronger words to that effect in typical style). Who would want to step into that......?

Permalink Permalink

Wow. Isn't it a stated objective to make O-league? If no experienced coach steps in - broonie you reading this? - and less $ around and the youth team hardly setting the world on fire the last 2 campaigns, could canterbury be heading into a very tough era? Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. With Pitts and clapham coaching a young guns trying squad over winter are they in line to take on Youth next season?

Very unlikely as heavily involved with several over high profiles sports sides including the Canada Women's Footbal side.

Fundraising effort for former Canterbury United player Ben Hall who has motor neuron disease and is confined to a wheelchair. Needs help to buy specialist equipment:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/MNDMachine/240314519366394

FROM BEN:

Hello everyone,

As you may or may not know my good friend Matt Lear was a huge catalyst for fundraising for my van over two years ago. By running 620km's he got a large chunk of funding for the van for his efforts. Well he doesn't do things by halves so he has signed up to run the Auckland Marathon in September to raise money for my ongoing battle with MND i.e Tobii Communication software & computer (see link below), bathroom conversion & a possible treatment.

http://www.tobii.com/assistive-technology/global/products/hardware/tobii-i-series/

Here's a word from Matt:

"Hello all I have entered the Auckland Marathon this year to fundraise for my friend Ben Hall who most of you know suffers from Motor Neuron disease. We are looking to raise money for Ben to buy a computer system that will help with communication, this little guy costs 30k so hopefully can make a dent in that. Even if you can donate $1 it all helps. People like Rob Spence however I expect a decent amount. Similar to last time below is what you will get if you donate

1) You will be helping out a good man and if your friends with me chances are you could do with doing a good deed
2) Knowing I'll be in pain for over 6 months while training and knowing that I hate running so double rainbow
3) Knowing I'll be in a lot of pain on the actual day and you can feel free to pelt me with pillow cases filled with bars of soap on the way round the course
4) Invite to exclusive after party/BBQ, my house holds twelve so first twelve in win
5) Biggest donation can choose what I wear (No Liverpool kit)

Feel free to share with others"

I have created an account for funds to be donated into.

Matt's Running Account

I thank you in advance for your support.

Are all clubs fully committed to canterbury united - as administered by mainland football - as the sole canterbury representative in the ASBP? Just wondering.

Today's NZ Herald

'Mercedes Using AB's shrink'

"Mercedes Formula One team have enlisted the services of sports psychiatrist Dr Ceri Evans, 50 [ who made more than 100 appearances for Oxford Utd. in the early 90's as well as gaining 56 caps for the All Whites] on a consultancy basis ... etc, etc.

I wonder if there is a want to involve him more in a national role but he is not able to give the time to it. With all his performance and intelligence, that's another great resource that NZF do not use at the moment.

Sure JV, but I'm also sure the fees he can command have an impact on availability - even if he's doing something on mates rates for NZF.

Maybe NZF have never asked him.

Ceri worked with John Herdman and assisted him with the Canadian Womens team at the Olympics (Bronze Medal). Rob Sherman also involved.
