How is Mario Hoffman working out?

Imo Hoffman is best out of below average group of "imports". Only came on in 2nd half today for Dickinson, as lone striker. He has had some decent performances and at least looks like he is trying, but not up to ASB Prem standard. 10 games (some as sub) for return of 1 goal.

yet he is seen to be better than the locals. devine has ruined Canterburys identity

Seems to be a case of 'jobs for the boys'.  I remember early press write ups about the imports knowing Devine.

I really think the guy has no idea he seems to think you can throw a few individual players together and make a team - there seems to be no structure or plan with no ability to adapt to different attacking/defensive situations during a game.  Resulting in frustrations within the team.

1. Where did he come from?  2. What experience does he have as a coach?

1. Barnet. Knights. Metro.

2. Metro.

'nuff said.

He played at Lynn Avon as well? Or was he assistant to Knowles at Lynn Avon? Mind blank.

I think he was also player coach at Manurewa for a season.

Objectively, for an ASBP coach, his coaching experience gives the appearance of being very limited.

^ Not sure. I've just seen him playing for Barnet & Knights and coaching Metro.

Speaking to a couple of former players the camp is not happy. Seans more suited for a 2IC role under someone, tries to be good cop all the time.

Half a dozen locals most likely won't be back if he gets appointed another year. Not including the Jaffas that won't come back.

(not that we need them)

I hope that goes for better level of coaching also

Good coaches develop teams and know what players they need to add

Something the recruitment this year was clearly lacking

Bringing in better players are not going to make you better.

Time Canterbury employed a coach that knows more about development and club managment and use all the chch based players

Wouldn't go watch a game if there was limited local Cantabrians in it.

the croud numbers would go down not up.

Agree with a lot of this.  The whole Canterbury United organisation seems to have over the past few years adopted a 'knee jerk' approach to anything.

Too many excuses - how a coach can recruit and lose so many players in such a short time needs investigation.  Also a loss is a loss - some of the comments quoted in the paper make him think anyone that was at the game is blind or a complete idiot.

From Canterbury United Dragon's fb page:

Canterbury United are pleased to announce that Andy Pitman has accepted the role of ASB NYL Head Coach for 2015 season.

Pitman is well-recognised in the Canterbury region, representing Canterbury United as player until 2013. Originally from Wales Pitman has a great understanding of the national game.

I thought you said Turnball wasn't up to it.

Yet your needs list seems to pretty well describe what he does,.

what professional coaching club or organisation has Turnbull ever been involved in??

Taking nothing away from what he has done in the past.

He is no where near the coaching qualifications or professional experience that Ramon at ACFC , the Waibop coach or others in the league as a coach.

The ASB like it or not has professional coaches and players from European set ups, especially Auckland and team Welly something Turnbull  has never had experience with

Dickinson another blank? I was struggling to find reason why both Auckland sides hadn't signed him but now I think we all know. Cant wait to see more comical quotes from coach devine in the press tomorrow. time running out for play offs.

question guys who is your player of season so far?

No stand out for me. If was to pick would be from Peers (though limited by injuries) , C Mitchell though not always started this season, T Schwarz when not abusing team mates or Highfield because he played 100 games all up.

Looks like it has started already.  A loss is a loss.  I have never seem a man so desperate to glorify the quality of his team's losses.  This is a man desparate to keep his job and his extra $ per year.

Heard a few things from an insider at the club on the weekend.

-Not a lot of people like Devine, will most likely be out out at the end of the season.

-Also Devine was housing a couple of the non local players in his garage in some weird agreement.

-Clapham is on $30k.

Yep, I was quite surprised as well. To be fair though, it's 30k for like, what 16 games?

Believe that number is somehow connected to the $60k Canterbury recieved from Clapham's WC inclusion.

A few years ago NZ Football announced that the League was to be solely amateur and any clubs found to be paying players could be penalised by fines / loss of points.

This of course was to enable franchises to receive gaming grants for travel etc. I then heard on Radio Sport the coach of Auckland City say that they had paid good money for a particular player so I emailed NZ Football CEO informing him and requesting the process for lodging an appeal.

Never got a reply after two requests so emailed the Chairman. Once again no reply.  Funny that!

Did you factor in the fact of living in a Mainland Football house with no rent, internet, or power to pay for and some of the food and grog allowance included as well.

Mainland and Dragons have had the odd out off towner living there over the years.

May be wrong but have heard that house is no longer available.

How will he react to that?  They will need to invite the security from game day to be present.

Actually why don't you or someone else on the inside go in boots and all.  There must be some more serious disfunction to report.

One question I want to know is why there has been such a big turnover of so called 'name players' this year.  Always a case of next best thing then they leave.  Is this a case of greater fool theory in action?

Funny to see after Xmas Stansfield released because of a bad injury that will put him out, yet can sign for WaiBOP straight after and scored in the weekend.

what's really going on?

if Clapham is on 30k could this be also part of problem. is he that much better that he deserves it. I know bad thing to say but hoping for another defeat just to add another nail in his coffin

From memory it was around 2009/ 2010, as it was the CEO who was in place at the time we qualified for The World Cup who I emailed twice. Shortly after he resigned and I think went to organise the NZ Golf Open

NZ Football made a big noise of the League staying amateur because if clubs were found to be playing players they were then deemed to be professional  and therefore would not qualify for gaming machine grants.

I am sure there are others who were closely involved at the time who will recall.

Doesn't it come down to what they are being paid for.

Most of the "pros" in the ASB Prem are paid for coaching , not for playing.

If they are paid for playing then money from the gaming trusts is not available - for coaching it is fine..

That is a separate issue to reimbursement of expenses.

I know it's a blurred line but the difference is critical in terms of pokie money

The Dragons wanting us to pay $10 to go and watch them on a Saturday when other top sport is on.

Would be OK if they happened to be a team that rated as worth crossing the road to watch, sorry but not even that this season.

there's something called "passion", no matter how bad your team is you'll be there. Seems to be far away right now, maybe in a few years.

"Passion" tell the people running Canterbury United that - they would rather the croud sit and clap and say nothing during the games.  A lot of fans with passion are not even showing up at the moment because of the treatment with the bank close off (you could say they had the passion sucked out of them) - the ones that are are just using up their season passes.
