Brilliant feature on Canterbury United in the current June "World Soccer" magazine from the UK (p. 40):
-by Paul Moon, the magazine's Oceania correspondent since 1986 (who used to live in Oamaru but may have moved to Christchurch since the 90s when he sent me some football memorabilia)
-full page feature article focuses on Canterbury United's return to form this season: reviews Canty's season, the NZFC Final, Keith Braithwaite's influence, Aaron Clapham's sensational form etc.
-Nice large photo of Canty and Waitak players trooping out for the NZFC Final; smaller photo of Clapham.
Probably the first time this mag's carried such a large feature on an Oceania club side. Such attention usually reserved for major clubs like Man Utd, Milan or Barcelona. A sign they're taking our football more seriously, although this mag deserves credit for always covering Oceania over the years. It used to piss Aussies off before they left Oceania that a Kiwi was the correspondent!
"World Soccer" is the most prestigious English language international football magazine. Covers and is read by the whole globe. I know Premier League managers read it: saw an interview once where on being asked how he came to sign a certain player, Sir Alex said he'd read about him in World Soccer. Also saw a copy on Sam Allardyce's office desk when being interviewed once.
The "World Soccer" annual international team, player and manager awards carry a lot of weight.
This article is in the June issue which can be found now e.g. at Whitcoulls in central Christchurch, Cashel Mall (air-freighted ed.: $19); the cheaper surface ed. will arrive in a few weeks.
This ed. came out in Britain June 14. July edition isn't out in Britain until July 16.
