Surprising odds at the TAB but it looks to me like an even money contest
Auckland City have not been extended much this year in the Northern League
And don't forget that Olympic have a number of ex Tee Dubs players that are used to playing at Kiwitea Street and have beaten City before so not likely to be intimidated.
Tasty clash. Hope the weather improves !

Maybe the fact that ACFC played the OCL final midweek has an influence?

Good cup tie at Kiwitea Street today in front of a good crowd in excellent conditions.
Auckland City 3 Olympic 1 .(HT 2-0)
Key moment was Citys second goal in first half injury time.Never really saw what happened so someone there or having viewed the live stream might enlighten me.
Could argue that score flattered Auckland but they took their chances better.Olympic certainly went toe to toe for the fill 90 minutes.
That would have been a far tougher game for City than the O League final.
For Olympic JHS was disappointing and looked a frustrated onlooker most of the time. Bouzoukis was anonymous - ball just didn't go his way. Thought Gould was outstanding and Randell exciting. Mata and Pazlevic solid.Gaul amixture of the sublime and ridiculous.
For City Howieson excellent and De vries and Mamikum always dangerous.Defensively well organised.
So its taken until late august to see a competetive game up north.
As an aside there was no charge. Always thought that semis had to have a charge with the proceeds going to NZFA to cover travel costs.
I guess they wouldn't have been able to charge at madills farm
On the subject of the other semi be interested in anyones views as to the Suburbs penalty.Have heard it described as controversial. i saw it on the You tube feed.Certainly was a foul but the doubt seemed to be that the foul may have started outside the area and finished inside the area.

I agree, that game was a real step up from any Northern League game I’ve seen this year (as would be expected). Olympic are a tidy side and definitely could
have gotten some more goals on another day.

JHS was very disappointing (given the hype and how exciting he has been in past Team Welly games I’ve seen). Gould was very exciting and in general Olympic had there moments.

For City, Howieson was class all day, rarely giving it away. All the big players like De Vries, Ilich and Tade were good as well. Joe Lee was pretty frustrating but nicked a scrappy goal at the end of stoppage time in the first half after a sublime De Vries outside of the boot pass.

Hard to see Auckland city not picking up every domestic trophy on offer with performances like this. What other team can bring on quality like Tade, Drake and Gillion off the bench.

Auckland City vs Wellington Phoenix [3-1]

Entertaining match this afternoon. Olympic the underdogs and City riding high off OFC success. Sunny, good pitch and a good turn out especially from Olympic supporters who credit to them travelled north to get behind their boys.

Recap
Right from the get go, Wellington Olympic pressed high with Kalin Gould #9 leading the line, Auckland City showing class to comfortably play with the ball in their defensive third. Olympic were set up in what seemed to be a 3 back. Sustaining pressure City put a calculated ball forward and were awarded a foul 25 yards out. A training ground set piece of multiple runners caused havoc in the Olympic box and Dylan Manickum #10 poked the ball home to give the hosts an early lead. It was a feisty encounter with City controlling the position up until the 41st Minute when Olympic’s T Davenport Petersen #6 beat Cam Howieson #7 to the ball and gave it the K Gould #9 who ran at the defence and slipped it through to Jack Henry Sinclar #14 who shot goal wides from just outside the 6 yard yet a fantastic sliding tackle from Adam Mitchell #2 put the ball out for a corner. In the 45th minute Ryan De Vries #11 showed technical brilliance with an outside of the boot through ball finding Joe Lee who got on the ball and put it goalwards, with the help of a deflection it caught the keeper heading the wrong way and put City 2-0 up at the break.
Olympic came out firing in the second half and were rewarded in the  48th minute when Jesse Randall #34 received the ball just outside the box, pivoted goalwards and found the bottom corner from outside the box, a great strike. In the 65th a perfectly weighted ball caught Olympic CB J Gulley #5 off guard and E Tade #20 latched onto it inside the box, S Basalaj #1 was caught in no mans land, Tade lifted it over him to seal the deal. 3-1 City.

Match Notes
  • Good turnout for a game
  • Auckland City looked understrength in Midfield
  • Wellington Olympic at times tried to make it look too pretty. Just shoot.

Player Ratings
Auckland City
- Ryan De Vires 8/10 Was kept quiet by Ben Mata, lovely assist for City’s 2nd
- Adam Mitchell 8.5/10 Commanded the City backline all game, goal saving slide tackle.
- Cam Howieson 7.5/10 Not very influential today. Always composed, would say fatigue setting in with many games recently.
Wellington Olympic
- T Davenport Peterson 8.5/10 Workhorse playing CDM, Kept Howieson overall quiet and If it was purely tactical shouldn’t have been bought off the park.
- Ben Mata 9/10 Standout today. A rock at the back and a  true captain, should be given a shot at Phoenix.
- Jack Henry Sinclar 7/10 Was excited to see him play today, looked a bit off the pace and timid. Showed signs of quality and can see he’s got some pace. On another day could’ve been a game changer.
- K Gould 8/10 Pressed like mad for 90 minutes straight, thought he would tire but credit to him worked his ass off for his team. Needed to be a bit more selfish in front of goal though.
- Jesse Randall 8.5/10 Composed on the ball and scored a beauty. Reminds me of Dylan Manickum from City, looks like a futsal player with first touch.

Enjoyed the game and the crowd.  I was Impressed by Olympic and it proves that the top Wellington Teams would not  get relegated and can compete in the Northern League.   Also, I think NZ Football should have a trophy of some sort for the top non Northern League team in the cup.
Looking forward to North Harbour!

Yes, in 2019 and 2021 that trophy was called the Chatham Cup.

In the Australia Cup, the preliminary rounds coincide with the local state knock out cup.  The teams that qualify for the Australia Cup also playoff against their state opposition for another trophy.

Easy when the State has 1 (Tasmania, Northern Territoty, ACT), 2 (West Australia, South Australia), or 4 qualifiers (NSW).  For Victoria which has 5 teams qualify to Australia Cup, they need a match to whittle 5 to 4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Dockerty_Cup

Nothing stopping something similar happening in our regions. ie the two south sides playing for a trophy, the 2 mainland sides playing for a trophy, the two capital/central sides playing for a trophy, the 4 northern sides playing for a trophy.

Canterbury already has the English Cup which is a separate cup competition, obviously the Southern League and Hurley Shield. I don't really think there needs to be a trophy for the team that gets knocked out the lastest, cause at the end of the day they were still knocked out just like the rest.

Why do you want them to hand out participation trophies in senior men's football?

Also that's an incredibly low bar you are setting if the top Welly teams proving they wouldn't get relegated in the Northern League is satisfactory.

Very interested that the Chatham cup final is scheduled for the same week as the U19 World Cup Qualifiers. You will have to think this affects suburbs quite a bit with Aaryan Raj , Joe Knowles , Jackson Jarvie all being regular starters this year  and likely to get named tomorrow when the squad gets announced.

What is the cup that no one playing in the Chatham Cup final wants to win ? It is the Bob Smith Cup awarded to the losing finalist. It is as far as we should go in awarding trophies for participation.
From memory Bob Smith was a Canterbury footballer (Western ?)  who played in a number of finals and had a distinguished period as an administrator

Yes that's the one - Bob Smith memorial trophy
not sure he played in a number of finals, maybe 1 (1955) but the Smith family was quite a big one he had 3-4 brothers and they all played as well.
Bob's grandson is Ryan Nelsen

Did,'t think it was that bad a game.Crowd was announced at 2800 although some left after womans game .Atmosphere was not great I agree.I did a count this morning and this was the 27th Chatham Cup Final I have attended in person and have been to plenty worse.Maybe the keeper could have done better with the goal but Manickum did well to create a shooting chance.Suburbs might feel a bit unlucky in not equalising late on.They certainly pressed hard and got in Citys face and disrupted them.Got a bit testy late on .Question for Anoraks ?Can Central add this win to their tally ?Legally no .morally yes ?

Central still exist as a club in their own right, they're in NRF Champ this season, and went out of the Cup to Birko, so it'd be pretty (very) dodgy to add it to their tally.

I thought Joe Knowles should've done better with the shot but he's a 17 year old kid, so will be better for the experience. He joins the U19s in Tahiti now so he's not terrible (though it can be argued whether some keepers who got picked deserved to go over others who didn't).

did you miss the mass coverage from NZF promoting it?
so did we

pretty poor that they only showed it on you tube - my twitter feed seemed to be full of people who would have watched it watching the Australia Cup semi final between Sydney United 58 and Brisbane Roar instead

If you were an early arrival (ie before the kick off of the womens game) there were no programmes available and I only realised there actually was one when i saw someone with one during the mens final. Small point but important.

The Wikipedia page for the Chatham Cup has been updated to show the tiers of teams consistent with how the various other cup competitions around the world are shown. (a good thing)
Interestingly the teams that qualified for the National League are marked (1) whilst those that did not qualify for the National League are marked (2).   Same logic is on the KS Cup page as well.

For the Chatham Cup this means the final appears ...
 Auckland City (1)        1–0            Eastern Suburbs (2)

To me that gives the wrong impression that a second division side made the final.

I agree it's misleading. I'd suggest starting a discussion on the Talk page for the article.

Yeah that’s not right. Second tier would be Northern Div 1, Cap Prem etc…
