GOULD: Stay or go?

This question will be being asked by football fans all over the Hawkes Bay. Woeful home form, not just in results but in the manner in which they played at Park Island, will have many calling for his departure. To many times,in my opinion ( for the first 5 home games), HBU lacked fight and desire. There was a feeling that 10 (MITCH O'BRIAN the exception) partiipents in HBU colours were more akin to a display of headless chook racing rather than a game of footy.HBU lacked ideas in the penalty box and home games became a yawn. They stepped up vs Waitakari and I thought they were the better team but went down by the one goal.Missed the Otago match so can't comment.
HBUs away form was clearly in a different league.I had the fortune to be present at Palmerston Nth to see them play very well and snatch a last gasp win.
Who's to blame? Should Gouldy go?
  "NO"
Jonathon Gould is doing a great job at HBU. the team is improving each season and he has the ability to attract some very good players. He has some very sound contacts on the otherside of the world that he can tap into.If the NZFC continues, HBU must keep GOULDY at the helm.
The area  at HBU that needs 'tidying up' is the admin side, not the footballing bit. Room for a huge improvement there from the publics perspective.

Maybe off topic but Gouldy has done and is doing some great things to help young Kiwis further their careers.

HBU haven't been awful this year so seems he's doing a good job there too.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I saw HBU play twice this summer.

I thought they had the spine of a very competitive team and were generally a tough unit.

However, I wasn't convinced by the big lad at the back, and the fullbacks (not Davies) could be rabbits. Finally, the striker Sorormon, tended to be mercurial, but a 30-minute player.  But the rest were pretty steady.

On the positive side, Peverley looked a whole lot better than I recalled in his time at Waikato and Fyfe often caught the eye.

it is a game of fine margins and you could throw a blanket over five of the eight teams in the league.

And a lot of teams lift their game at Park Island (I've always wondered why it isn't called Island Park), simply because it is a nicer place than their own back yard.

Is there anybody else potentially in the frame to challenge for coach?

Good posts and agree with your summations Bruce. I agree the Gouldy is good for the game and has helped a frew kiwis. I do have to ask this question purely to play devils advocate.

I think we agree he has had a better team this year than others, yet still only finished 5th (in a tight comp sure). Why would you keep on a coach where in 4 years, they haven't cracked it, yet the HB team seems to improve every year and the standard of the comp dropped this year? Not suggesting he should get dumped at all, just asking purely for feedback.

Anyway Richard Gillespie lives in Napier now so you might have a better keeper next year with Dan Robinson in Waitakere and playing out of his skin.

I would say Mitch O'brien is a quality goalie one of the best playing in the NZFC

Dan Robinson & Richard Gillespie would certainly be better i think
Greg Walters, Chris Marsh and Liam Little would be of comparable quality

You must sack gould. Four years and not even a playoff spot! He is not a good head coach. He would be valuable to keep around as an assistant but I don't think his ego would allow that. As a HB fan his dugout bahavour is c#@p and embarrassing. His man managment is poor and he seems to be driving good young players away (Jason Hayne, Sam Jenkins) The only reason he has stayed in the job thiss long is because he spends his spare time buttering up the board at park island and nz football.

Gould is good at luring players to the bay. Agree his dugout antics are quite bad but are quite amusing in other ways. But the bay will make the playoffs next year if there is one.

Just to clear a couple of facts up.
Gouldy has only been incharge for 3 full seasons. He took over when HB United had played seven and lost seven in 2006 !

Since then, they have finished 6th, 4th and 5th.
Please note HB would have made the play-offs last season had the format not been changed.

Last season HB won 8 games from 21 and finished 4th, this season they have won 7 out of 14 and finished 5th, work that one out ! As for Tony Cottee's comments, his performance on the touch line can be a little over the top, but at no time does he use foul and abusive language, which is more than can be said for other visiting coaches and players.

With respect to Jason Hayne, he wanted to move to Auckland and was offered another deal, he wanted to leave but has been tremendous this season. Sam Jenkins was also offered a contract this season, but was keen to play in Wellington where he is at University. Sam considers Gouldy as one of his closest mentors.

Mr Cottee, I would suggest that if you have any issues with Gouldy you take it up with him instead of hiding behind the made up name.

HB United currently run with one of the smallest playing budgets in the NZFC. The Academy is now producing players going on to play for New Zealand, the average gate has increased since last season and they have the best away record in the league.

Yes the continuance of his position should be considered, but at least try to be a little more open to the good things that have happened in this region.

Great comments.
I believe Gouldy shouldn't go as he a straight foward coach and expresses what he thinks and how he feels. Thats what you need ok the touchline stuff is not the best but its fair enough the referee needs to know what he's got wrong even though they won't change there decison its part of the game.. Why just pinpoint him, the players give the referee's a serve up aswell.

The club is on the right track and in no means going backwards. Good academy set up one of the 3 franchises who actually have this and have a team in National Youth League.
There is a lot of talent to filter through and this gives them the chances to step it with the so called "big boys" of Auckland.

gould does well with the players he has and has the ability to turn this team into a very good side

every coach needs time in the job... and at least he doesn't have a dreadful record like terry phelan at otago (they are minging by the way) and if johny goes you can kiss bobby good by as well. if it wasnt for bobby players like sam messam wouldn't have improved and gone on to play for their country so i think at least one more season is a must...

Nice propoganda there Johnny Gould but
its 3.75 seasons (I've done my homework)
Last year before the playoffs changed when they finished fourth, how did that qualify them for the top 3??? Slap yourself son.  They finished 6th when it was a top 5, 4th when it was a top 3 and 5th when it was a top 4????? hmmmmmmmm. Lets make it EASIER this, and still fail. Yup lets reward that.

His performance on the touch line outrank anyone elses and although Phelan can blow a seal, its not to the same degree as Gould.
Rufer - Stoned
Tua'a - quiet
Milicich - not too bad
Edmondson - behaved this year
Monsef - Can someone return his voice box
Sova - a peep is louder
Posa - um guys, please can you do this, guys??
Jacobs - why break a sweat.

Yeah he does some great things for NZF. No questions about it. But his team have not achieved. So why not keep him on as an NZF regional coach (like Aaron McFarlane is in Auckland and he is not NZFC) and take his NZFC duties off him??'

Thanks for playing one man army. Epic fail.

Odds on there will be an NZFC next season.  I guess Matt Chandler is in the box seat to step up to the premier league.  He's a good man.
