It looks like they have some sorting out to do. CG obviously thought he still had the job and that the board were going to look into making it a fulltime role. Meanwhile the board have taken the conversation as because the job wasnt fulltime (and they had no desire or money to make it one) that CG wasnt interested. CG will not be involved in any capacity unless theyreconcile their differences/misunderstanding.

Just reading the HB Today website and a few comments on here. CG didn't want a full-time role, but it looks like the admin set-up at HBU meant that he had to get very involved with the day-to day runnings at the club that he couldn't commit to because of his full-time job as a bank manager. He wanted this sorting out before he said yes to a new contract. He is quoted as aying that he was waiting to hear back to what the boards vision and ambitions were before was back on board. Looks like they've move on without consulting him. an even bigger stuff up thatn losing the points last season by the looks of it.

Sounds like HB have just got their very own David Moyes.

Well, I'm glad someone is enjoying it - I think it is an absolute bloody shambles and I have real fears over the future of HBU if this sort of management continues.  It was bad enough over the adminstrative bungle that cost the points earlier in the year - now it looks as though they can't even get their stuff together over a coach.  It would be very convenient for the Board of HBU and for Central Football to employ Brent Angell as he is already employed by CF so there would be a saving there and there seems to be a real push to make this happen..   However, that move would certainly not be popular with the players and will cause some problems.   I think that Angell burnt his bridges last year.

agree with it being a shambles and yeah id say Angell is most likely going to be named as coach, meaning some players aren't likely to return, based on what we are hearing of their problems they had with Angell last year when he stepped in. Was it said or written somewhere that they would announce the new coach tomorrow?

Media Release From HBU:

30 May 2014

JOINT STATEMENT FROM CENTAL FOOTBALL AND HAWKE’S BAY UNITED FOOTBALL

Brett Angell appointed Head Coach of Hawke’s Bay United Football

Brett Angell has been appointed as the Head Coach of Hawke’s Bay United Football Franchise for the 2014/2015 ASB Premiership.

Angell replaces Chris Greatholder who led the Franchise team to the playoffs in the last two years.

Angell, a former English Premier League player and holder of a UEFA License will share his Head Coach responsibilities with his Central Football Federation Development Manager role, a position he had held since 2011.

Central Football Chief Executive John McGifford, who also shares a dual role as General Manager of Hawke’s Bay United Football said the appointment of Brett Angell aligns with the strategy of bringing the Federation and the Franchise closer together.

“Since July 2013 the Federation has provided a number of administrative services to the franchise and it was a natural progression to expand the relationship to include on-pitch functions.

“Not only does the relationship give Hawke’s Bay United access to more resources, including one of New Zealand’s most highly qualified coaches in Brett Angell, but it also aligns with Central Football’s own personal development strategies for its people,” Mr McGifford said.

The Head Coach appointment brings a conclusion to a process which has involved robust consultation between the Federation and Franchise as well as engagement with New Zealand Football and senior members of the coaching team from the 2013/2014 ASB Premiership, including Chris Greatholder.

“The enormity of Chris juggling full time employment outside of football along with the Head Coach role was something that was seriously considered in our 2014/2015 planning, as was the expansion of that role to a fulltime position. Unfortunately a fulltime role is a financial luxury the Franchise cannot afford, which Chris accepts”.

“Chris has done a superb job during his three year tenure. He not only took the Franchise to its highest ever placings but developed a culture of real ‘franchise pride’ within all he has connected with in that journey.

“Although Chris won’t be head coach, there still remains a very important place for him in the Hawke’s Bay United team and we do look forward to him remaining part of the franchise’s pathway,” said McGifford.

All enquiries should be directed to John McGifford at ceo@centralfootball.co.nz or (phone) 0274 335522.

So Chris Greatholder wsa basically not considered because he was he he had another full time job, but Brett Angell will still do the Central Football Federation Development Manager role, which is presumably a full time job?

I am I missing someithing here?

The only thing you are missing is that rain, hail or shine, Angell was going to be appointed to the role.   I doubt whether Chris G will be interested in remaining involved after the way he seems to have been treated.

I think you missed the fact that Chris took a month off last season because work load banking and coaching on top of a young family was to much! Brett is in the position where his job role is directly aligned with this coaching position. I think Chris will remain in some capacity think bit silly  if he didn't!

Chris could've coached and continued to work full if the admin and set up was organised. Chris had to get involved with a lot of the admin stuff last year, as a lot of the admin people new nothing about the football and didn't have a clue about what they were doing. Chris had to take a month of because he was stressed out because he was doing a lot more then he should've. Bob Patterson had one coach in mind for the past two years and has finally got his wish, in angell becoming head coach.

w_f_f - have you followed any of this story? It is obvious you are a Brett Angell fan, but think about what you are saying! Why in his right mind would CG want to stay with an organisation that have disrespected him so much? To say he'd be silly not to stay is laughable. Bridges well and truly burnt if it was me in all this. I guess we will see what happens next.

I find this hard to belive.  CG has turned that franchise around.  So frustrating, what's the point of caring now if the admin don't listen to the coach, players or fans...

Really need someone from HBU to front up on this one with some facts.

Technically Brett is by far the better person for the job, although it appears that he lacks some man management skills. I think his coaching style may have been to direct for the players and they would not have been used to that. Then again a few seasons ago I saw him lay into Biss about his general attitude towards training so may be that could be the reason, some of them don't like home truths.  I think for him to come in last season as he did and try to change things is stupid. If CG wants to progress as a coach where else in HB is he going to do that? I can't imagine his relationship with Brett is bad, unless i've missed something and it was Brett who made the decision to get rid of CG.

There was an article in HB Today last Saturday [I think] but I can't find it on line. It was quoting John McGifford the HBU CEO and CEO of Central football too as it happens. The more I think of it, it might have been one of those letters that outline an opinion/clarification etc on a news story and penned by McGifford himelf. Anyway.... he basically said that Greatholder had told the board that he wouldn't be reapplying for the job as he wanted it to be full time but it appears he had a change of mind but did not advise them of this. His contract ended anyway and they employed Brett Angel as he was able to do the role part time in conjunction with his job at Central Football. Lots of comment about how great Greatholder is/was and they want to work with him etc etc. Nothing From Greatholder in the media since his initial comments when the story broke, that he found out he didn't have the job on twitter [or something to that effect]. McGifford also spoke of the situation when Angel took over the coaching of the team while Greatholder was on 'stress' leave. He said the job was offered to Perry Cotton who turned it down, Angel, apparently, then offered to undertake the role to 'help out' in the meantime Cotton changed his mind and that is why Angel never appeared on the sideline and the tream was run by Cotton.

By and large, it seems to be a break down in communication, where Central Football have taken Greatholder's 'resignation' on face value but never bothered to double check later on. Maybe because they were reasonably happy to accept it - I don't know. What I will say though, is if I was an employer and one of my staff needed to take a break from his job because it was getting on top of him -  I would probably look at replacing him with someone that wouldn't be affected in that way when his contract expired.

Edit: shocking spelling mistakes

NP - the Article was on Saturday and it was a reply from John McGifford as to the stories that had been in the paper previously.   Has not been on line unfortunately.

It was very much a "try to make things right" article.

The one thing that I would ask - in this modern day of "transparency", touchy-feely PC crap, why wasn't the coaching job advertised?   Methinks that it would have opened up too much if they had and it is my opinion that the Chair of HBU wanted Angell to be the coach.

Don't get me wrong because I don't actually mind Brett as a person. But in his first session during greatholders break, I was there watching and in 2 hours of training, players probably ran around for ten minutes, the rest of the time they were told to Stop Stand still.

Against waitakere first half the gameplan of Brett's was to drop off and waitak dominated at half time Perry and the players decided to go back to how they played under Chris, second half was a completely different game and HB went from 2 nil down to 2 all.

One of Brett's famous coaching quotes is 'Stop Stand Still'. Every 5 seconds this is what he would shout, followed by a 5 minute lecture on what everyone was doing wrong. 5 seconds isn't enough time for every single player on the pitch to have done something wrong

Umm sorry to split hairs as I agree with the most part of what you've said. But I was at that game, HB took a 1-0 lead inside the first 10 minutes or so. It was 2-1 at half time

I'm feeling pretty confused about this now.  Are all these articles an attempted PR onslaught from the HB United board?  Would love to hear an honest interview with CG once the dust settles. I don't think you can blame Angel because if someone offers you a job you take it.  However would be looking for heads to roll on the board.  Sent the club back 5 years.

Permalink Permalink

If true, that would be a little bit silly. If Bill wants to be HBU coach one day soon he shouldn't piss those at Central Football off. If he does, he can kiss any idea, of coaching HBU, goodbye.
Permalink Permalink
Hmmm, not sure if this is true or not, but I'm sure Bill would realise any consequences involved. Playing devils advocate, maybe HBU have let him and the players down by the decisions made in the last 6 months or so. You only get one career and if he has an option to play O-League or stay at a club that lacks ambition, then I'd go. If he ended up at WaiBop or Canterbury for instance, then it would be hard to understand his reasons.
