Very few.

Quite a number (most of the two Auckland teams?) will work for the club, or the sponsors, but will not be technically full time players.  It is an amateur league after all.

Most players get expense money in the form of match payments.

If I was a young kid wanting a College scholarship I'd avoid the NZFC then.

All sorts of eligibility issues...

The more removed the safer you are.

Clubs who are paying players full time do, 100%, jeopardise the eligibility of their other players.

No doubt some/all will get away with it, but it's a hell of a risk if you're a young'un.

I'm almost minded to delete this whole thread because it could cause all sorts of hassle for (off the top of my head):

Mike Eagar
Mike O'Keefe
Sam Blackburn
Cory Chettleburgh
Fin Milne
Ben Hunt
Tim Myers
Nick Corliss
Nick Robson

Ummm...there will definitely be more.  All looking for NCAA scholarships...

Also players playing at winter clubs who pay full timers...but that's another topic.

New Zealand Footballs official stance is that it is an amateur league. Agent 472009-02-25 17:01:14

The smart ones channel their payments through the Islands, and have good legal representation.

On my piece in the other thread I had a look through the records of the NZFC franchises on the societies website, Otago United for one spend an inordinate amount of money on coaching and wages!!  Smithy go and have a look, and compare to other franchises, you will be surprised!  Understandable I suppose when they are bringing a coach in from overseas but hard to reconcile with their results...

So I'm sure some of their imports must be full time-ish.

Interesting JD.  You're not wrong.

From an NCAA perspective I would think that paid coaches who happen to be playing for an amateur team that pays them to coach kids or some such would be fine.  It's only if their payment is for playing that there's a potential problem.

I think the two Auckland franchises are really the only ones doing that.  But am happy to be proved wrong on that front.

Then on the left select "Other Registers Search".  The one you want is the Incorporated Societies register.

Then search for whatever you're after.

In this case Otago United's IncSoc number is 1489024

Well the money was for coaching, allegedly, so if there was no coaching done then someone should speak to the Department of Internal Affairs...

Some in the game would do well to have a read of this:

So does being a full-time player mean:

1. You get paid enough money that you don't need a second job.
or
2. You train full-time with the rest of the squad on the pitch and off everyday kind of like a 9 to 5 job?
or
3. both the above
or
4. Something else???

Surely if your team has one or two "full time" players they wouldn't have anyone else to train with, thus are not really full-time players?

If we build it, they will come...
