Does anyone know how he ended up over there?

Normo's coming home

Apparently through a guy named Morris Pagniello, who set him up with a youth contract at Vicenza, and from there he progressed to the full contract at Ascoli last European summer.

Pretty good, considering how often guys make British youth squad teams then never push on.

I hope they stay up - he's doing well to be there

Yeah, Pagniello runs the GISS.

Ascoli remain in the same position on the table.

With the main difference now that with two games to go they're 5 points away from the 18th, and if it stays like that they'll get directly relegated.

THey go into a relegation play off don't they?

In the relegation zone, the three last-placed teams (20th,21st and 22nd) are automatically demoted to Lega Pro Prima Divisione. If the 18th-placed team is 5 or more points ahead of the 19th-placed team, then the 19th-placed team becomes the 4th and final team to be demoted, otherwise the conditions for a playoff more commonly called playout exist.

If the playout is necessary, the 18th and 19th-placed teams are paired in a two-legged series with home-field advantage in the 2nd leg going to the 18th-placed team. The team with the higher aggregate score remains in Serie B while the loser becomes the fourth team relegated to Lega Pro Prima Divisione. If an aggregate tie exists at the end of regulation play of the 2nd leg, the 18th-placed team is saved, and the 19th-placed team is demoted.

That's the most convoluted relegation scheme I've ever come across - things are much more straight-forward in England.

Also, seems tough that four out of 22 sides are relegated (18.18 % of the sides or not too far off 1/5th) - in the English Championship of course it's three out of 24 sides (12.5 %).

It works the similar way at the top - if the third placed team is 10 points ahead of the fourth placed team, they get promoted directly, if not, then there's a playoff. Guess it's an attempt to keep everyone interested as long as possible to reduce opportunities for shady deals.

Surely there's no chance of that in Italy? :P

Ascoli finished 20th (3rd last) and have been relegated. 3rd division (Lega Pro 1) is split regionally, si?

Could benefit him as Liam may get more chance of a run in the Third Division? Similar to Winston Reid only getting a run with West Ham when they were relegated to the Championship?

Liam Graham is negotiating a new contract at Ascoli, now playing in the Italian Third Div., the "Lega Pro 1" but is currently injured and is looking at options. Ascoli's season commences September 1. They were knocked out of the Italian Cup a couple of weeks ago.

Liam’s Italian Job

Published August 1, 2013 |

"...Ascoli were relegated at the end of last season but will be looking to make an immediate return to Serie B but the question is whether the  right back will be a part of that or not.

“That is definitely Ascoli’s aim (to get promoted) but I’m still in negotiations with them over a new contract and there are also a few Serie B options, like Carpi who have just been promoted from the 3rd div into Serie B.”

Complicating matters though is a knee injury picked up 2 weeks ago in training.

“Unfortunately, I need to see what’s wrong with my knee before signing with anybody for this season. I might be out for a while but I’ll know in the next couple of days about my knee.”

Video profile of him on a magazine program from the club's You Tube channel in January (starts at 44 min.) visiting his apartment etc.:

Probably quite interesting for those who speak Italian. Liam seems completely fluent. Some of his Italian mates drop by.

That's great for Liam. Hope he gets his knee sorted. I think he's had problems with his knee before so I hope he can get it sorted, otherwise it could affect his career.

Hard to know what happening with L. Graham - but there's an article about him dated August 1 posted above where he says he's injured and negotiating a contract.

But he's on FIFA13:  http://www.fifa-almanac.com/player/fifa13w/211530#attributes-tab

He's a good player but has an ACL injury and will be back in March/April. For the coaches like Milicich to mix european based players with New Zealand ones is difficult because of the difference in their technical games. Never played with the U20's or Olympic teams in official competition because of an ankle injury.

Yes, I am his brother. He played in Japan before GISS in the school academy system playing against J-league academies. It was Seiritz school.

He was going to sign at Carpi before tearing his ACL on the first day of pre-season. So he is currently without a club but will be going back to Carpi on trial in March. It is more of a formality than a trial just to make sure he is still at the level he was. His rehab is going well so all is looking good at the moment.

Carpi - cool, a  Serie B team, so up a level from Ascoli.

A rapid rise for this club who were still in Serie D in 2010 but have gained successive promotions.

Nah mate all g. Just wondering if he'd had any senior caps though. My understanding was that he has only 1 game off the bench for the senior team last season so wasn't 100% sure if he actually would be being chased by another Serie B club is all.
Did he start for Ascoli this season before injury?

Hmmm that's very interesting Aidan. Michael Fitzgerald went to Seiritz in Japan and was signed from there, I also believe the Australian player Jason Davidson went to Seiritz, and he is now playing professionally in Holland. I didn't realise Liam went there.

Yeah the same school as Michael Fitzgerald, I'm not sure about Jason Davidson because I don't know him but they have had a lot of boys from New Zealand/Australia play there so it wouldn't surprise me if he did.

He was never contracted to Ascoli this season. On the first day of Carpi pre-season he tore his ACL. But at the moment he will be back on the 14th February.

You're correct that he only played once off the bench, however that's due more to Italian football politics rather than his ability. That's why Carpi and some other Serie B clubs are still interested in him.
