Nelson Bid 2012-13

The Nelson bid will officially be processed by NZ Football this week. If accepted, it is intended the team will be up and running ahead of the coming season.

ASB Premiership level players have returned to Nelson for 2012 - whether that is to play national league or not..

Paul Dirou, Mike White, Mike Bothwell, Mark Johnston, Erik Panzer, Jordan Swaney and Coey Turipa all have ASB Premiership experience. Unfortunately Gagame Feni is returning to the Solomon Islands this month when his visa runs out. Nelson will probably need a few out of towners to add some quality to their squad, but it is helpful already having a base of ASB Premiership players.

Very exciting for Nelson & will be great for all players and supporters in the region Luis. The politics in terms of Mainland connections are very interesting, to say the least.

Erik Panzer out of the equation as will be in the United States playing college football Quinnipiac University

Posted this on the Mainland tread but best suited here.

Yes it will be interesting to see if there is an increase in the current 8 teams, 2 round format or do they stay at 8 and go to 3 rounds. Will the existing eight teams all throw a entry for the next ASB Premiership. I hear there is strong bids from both a North Shore team and on from South Auckland as well but cannot see both Aucklands bid getting the nod if all the current teams are back, however four teams from Auckland would make sence for travel costs extra. Would also break down the power base of both Auckland City and Waitakere but maybe the dealt nail for Waikato FC.

Long team finance will be a bid factor for any new entry, there are stories about an off-shore backer for the Nelson bid but it will be money in the bank that is likely to seal the deal.

Does anyone know the Mainland Federation's opinion on the bid?

I still laugh that NBF regional development officer for the past decade says there isn't enough talent in the region.

Instead of embracing the fact the Mainland Fed could now have 2 ASB entries => more South Island footballers getting more opportunities at a higher level, I'm sure the navel-gazers in Cranford St are worrying about a) Canterbury United losing part of its player base and b) inevitable comparison of Canty United (for all intents and purposes, run by Mainland) with the privately funded start-up/up-start? Surely the Nelson entry will develop it's own academy/player pathway leading into its Youth team entry, effectively making the Mainland development officer role somewhat redundant. Also, there will be money issues around the amount the regions/clubs are levied to fund Canty United. Presumably the Nelson component of this will be under pressure - but I cant imagine Suburbs not wanting to play in the Mainland Premier League, so they will want to remain on good terms. The real question that no doubt concerns Cranford St is - does Nelson need Mainland? If so, for how long?

Ill tell you now, it's no secret that Nelson Suburbs heiracy are keen to move to Central Premier League

What are the pros and cons of such a shift?

Pros: Less travel. Potentially cheaper. Better quality opposition. There are a number of former Nelson Suburbs players currently living in Wellington. Wellington seems to be the hub of all things professional football now, so younger players could be seen by Wellington Phoenix coaches. New opposition could draw new fans.

Cons: If Nelson does not get an ASB Premiership bid, would a move to Wellington would also piss off Mainland Football and probably end its relationship with Canterbury United. Can't think of anything else..

Would it really be a smaller cost to cross the strait every fortnight than to travel down to Christchurch? (Plus the occasional trip to the Hawkes Bay, + potentially Taranaki/Manawatu/Gisborne?

I think this would be an excellent move, providing you had the sponsorship (or funds from somewhere) to pay for travel etc.

Nelson Suburbs seem like an alright club, but you're rotting away in the Mainland League.

Three for me, and two for them.

By 15 games I suppose they are referring to the inclusion of a youth team.

Does anyone know what other bids are in the pipeline as alluded to at the end of the article?

Strong bids from North Shore and South Auckland and still talk of Wellington Phoenix 'B' team. If the 'B' team gets the nod then it may count against the Nelson bid.

Phoenix B?

But aren't all their finishing school players going to be with Team Wellington? So other than them, will there be enough players to make a Phoenix B?

I heard things wrong about Phoenix 'B' being in the ASB Prem. Looks like the talk is maybe a 9 team Prem with the team having the bye then playing the Phoenix 'B'.

Meeting next week with the current ASB clubs, so looks like the final make-up for 2013-14 not that far away.

I hear that it looks like the eight ASB Prem teams from the season just completed want to be back in action this year so will there be an increase in numbers, if so likely to be a ten team league as also heard that the Phoenix 'B' team idea is not a dead duck.

Interesting to read, the story in the Nelson Weekly, not that is says anything one way or the other, basic PR as not going to show up to any of the clubs wanting to enter and say bad things.

Will still come down to finance which with two teams - ASB Prem and Youth will require at least $150K and with confirmation not likely until near the end of July (NZ Football were meant to be make the announcement in May) it does not leave any new team allot of time to secure players, coaches, finance etc.

After all this it would not surprise me if NZ Football put off any increase until the following season.

Sauce?

From several people that were at the meeting. If there is and increase looks like will be between Nelson and teams from Auckland region but I cannot see Waitak or Auckland City being that impressed if it is the latter.

Personally before there is any increase I think Football NZ need to take a hard look at how the whole ASB Premiership is promoted, basically it seems to left up tp each club to do their own promotion (or not), lets have a co-ordinated effect.

Will be easier to promote if the O League is not being played as should be able to have clubs playing week in week out without the stop start nature of past seasons.

Any news out of Nelson as heard from a party that is likely to be involved with the Nelson francise that there was meant to be meeting today with NZ Football.

Heard that a Nelson franchise unlikely to be involved this coming ASB season 2012/13, more likely to be 2013/14.

As I commented earlier NZ Football's own time table teams for the coming season was meant to be announced in May, so the clock is ticking for any new franchise to be up and running for the coming ASB Prem.

Does not give much time to find coaching / support staff and the 30 plus players needed for the two teams - senior and youth, and of course the finance which would be $150k plus.

Nelson Mail reporting that the Wairarapa bid has been declined by NZ Football. NZ Football have made the draft draw for the coming season so an announcement must be close. If Nelson aren't in until 2013/14 don't be surprised if you see them get a youth team for the coming season.

Would imagine Rapa got turned down for not meeting the stadium/facility requirements.

What would really be the benefit of a team from Wairarapa? They can't even field a team in the Central League without heavy input of international players and players from around the Country.

I agree. Would only dilute the the strength in that lower NI area. HB, Manawatu, Welly is already stretching it, but another from around those parts would be stupid.

Also may be a bit of a mission for travel arrangements.

Seen the draw on the Waitakere United website - no new teams for the current season. No surprises, just wait to see what the Youth League draw throws up.
