This article seems weird, cos Ben told me himself this time last year that he wouldn't head back to Tasman, due to no OCL. Still, looks promising for a chance to sign him next year.

Looks like Harris is being a bit of a smug asshole to me.

Golden boot winner with ties to the region. Surely they at least approached the guy.

Ben's a great dude, I'm 100% sure he's just poking fun at Stu, Matt and Steve - when Richmond Athletic came up to Wellington about this time last year Ben and I were both invited out for a drink and Ben clearly had no intention of returning to Nelson. I know he's still close with a lot of the Richmond guys who are now involved with Tasman so I wouldn't read too much into it.

He said he'd consider it but I doubt a season at Tasman would have won out over the Oceania Champions League

Tasman probably knew this so didn't bother, but then they made the odd decision not to go with Davor Tavich as coach

Ben Harris & Ben Wright would have been awesome up front for Tasman

Ben Wright would've been fantastic when he first came to Nelson, legs have gone a little now though. Some of the imports Richmond had ~2010 would've killed it in the SSP - Joe Green, Che Wilson, Jordy Yong, Jorge Donoso as well as Sam Mason-Smith and Ben Wright would've made Tasman a National league quality team by themselves.

Harris to play Nelson First Division over winter. Chance to lock him in for THe SSP next year?

what does he mean by "offer"? You can't pay players in this competition.

Exactly, that's why Auckland City attracts players from all over the globe to play  just for  the love of it.

To address a question above, there are a number of things clubs can offer players....

You can offer them direct employment, or contract work (most commonly in coaching roles) in conjunction with them playing for your club. Or you can offer to land them a job in a vocational sphere where they have specific skills or interests, perhaps with a slightly enhanced employment contract.

You can offer them assistance with immigration, including meeting the cost of applications, or assistance with completing coaching qualifications (which do get pricey at the top end).

You can offer them a sponsored car, or a sponsored rental accommodation, sorted independent of the club's accounts.

You can offer to reimburse them for costs associated with playing, etc.

Hope this helps.

As a successful season comes to an end, here are a couple positive points I believe Tasman did throughout their debut season:

1. Engaged the City's football community and created an atmosphere at games, unmatched in the league.

2. Promoted young local talent

3. Competed in the league

4. Successful structure for future

Just makes you think....what could have been if Davor had been in charge from the beginning.

Do you really think any of that (with the exception of getting overpaid for a bit of coaching) is what Ben Harris is talking about?

The getting overpaid for a bit of coaching is an issue for him. He works as a builder in Wellington so Tasman would certainly have to help him out with a job, like Nelson clubs have done in the past for other players that they have imported. He's also likely leaving some Miramar Rangers cash on the table by spending winter in Nelson, but I imagine its mostly to give him flexibility to travel and the freedom to take football a little less seriously for a bit.

He could always get a building job in Nelson. A good trade to have, could work anywhere in NZ.

No brainer of a decision, did a great job last time and can't wait to see what he can do with a full preseason.

I also noted that Ben Harris made a post thanking TW for a great two years - sounds like he's moving on. Possible signing?

Was there something about heading back to the UK to get some surgery on his knee?

There was also talk of him playing for Richmond in Nelson over winter. Knee surgery definitely sounds plausible though.

Plans must've changed then, Richmond announced him a month or so ago. Pity.

He's still going to play for Richmond, then back to the UK. He actually moved down to Nelson a couple of weeks ago and has been doing up the Richmond clubrooms.

Yeah that's what I thought. Saw him involved in some coaching progrmas with Clarkey too.

Returns to England in the middle of June. He will play for Richmond when his transfer goes through until he returns to the UK.

Some solid suggestions and I think all are reasonably realistic. Not sure Mike is still up to it but the rest would be very useful.

Joey Turner - 18 in 5 games! where do Richmond get these players from! What a track record! Tasman sign him up?

Probably a rhetorical question but I'm procrastinating at work.

Richmond has a strong history of English imports in recent times - from 2009-2011 we had guys like Joe Green, Ben Wright, Che Wilson, Jordy Yong and Sam Mason-Smith come over - now that I think about it that 2011 team was nuts and we knocked the Suburbs Mainland team out of the Chatham Cup one of those years, then got pipped by Coastal Spirit. These were through Rick Gower who was the manager at the time - Biggsy (current Nelson Suburbs 1st team coach) was the gaffer though.

Then current 1sts team manager Matt Campbell spent a few months in the UK working as a video analyst for Hampton and Richmond Borough (I think a 5th tier team?). Ben Harris was playing there at the time. Matt found out he had family in NZ and invited him over.

Joey Turner, as well as another Englishman Richmond have at the moment both played with Ben in the UK and I guess he got them over here? The other dude is heading back after the season though (and Ben left earlier this week).

I learnt a lot from playing with those first 5 guys and I think its great for football in the region.

No, that's the other import Tom Hickey.

I've heard similar as shearer9 from a board member.
