When you say he goes missing most of the game, you're not wrong, usually 90mins.

Those under-17 caps gets his foot in the door, so his CV might look impressive but in reality he's just a Balotelli

Unfortunately yes, when he was dropped to the Green Island second team, the firsts wouldn't have him, poison!

I'd be worried if he was my defensive midfielder...

Hopefully Bertie will do a job there. All depends on what formation he decides to use

If he really is just a lazy sod, then I can envisage him staying until December then quietly buggering off back to the islands.

If he works hard and doesn't disappear, welcome to the team, Scott!

What do you think is a realistic goal for Tasman this season? Are we trying to avoid the spoon or pushing for a midtable position?

If its the former, I don't mind the signing. Experience at a decent level and squad depth at the very least. If its the former and he turns out not to offer anything more than Bertie its a waste of time.

Do we know what types of contracts these guys are signing? Just 1 year contracts, with maybe an option to extend for another?

For the young ones, are they signing Amateur contracts to ensure they are still eligible to go to USA Colleges once they graduate high school if they wish to pursue that path?

I'd imagine all contracts will be amateur right?

I'd expect them all to be Semi-Pro to be honest (most teams in the league are), apart from the young guys who want to get overseas but even then they'll probably work a way around that.

Is there such thing as a "semi-pro" contract? I'm pretty sure a contract can only be Amateur or Professional....

That's different to what my obscene number of hours in football manager tell me. Part time contracts are definitely a thing, but probably count as professional for the NCAA.'s purposes.

If a contract isn't enough to live off but still pays, that's what I'd class as semi-professional - most of the teams in the league (if not all) would fall under that banner.

Lower mid-table would be what I want at least (7-5), but given the talent of youth and the prevalence of football in Nelson (city's n.1 sport) things would have to improve over the next few seasons.

I think a successful debut season would be to beat Southern United in every game (finish higher than them), not get embarrassed by Auckland City and Team Wellington and to at least once get a win over Canterbury United.

Then long-term, those so called talented youngsters will hopefully form a solid core of established locals that can take them to the semifinals within three to five seasons.

If you are being paid in a contract, it is professional, no matter the amount of funds you are receiving. I understand your point, but for the purpose of my original statement regarding Amateurism to still be eligible for USA Colleges, you cannot have been paid a weekly stipend. That is why I am curious to know whether the registration form/contract states it is amateur or professional.....

The New Zealand League is an amateur league, so all contracts will be amateur. NZF had to declare it so to allow the Phoenix to compete in the A-League otherwise FIFA wouldn't have allowed it as NZ would have been deemed to have a professional league

While it's an amateur league, players can receive a certain amount of expenses each week, I think up to $700 (but don't quote me on that).

Thank you for clearing that up. Very valuable information and is great news for youngsters who get senior team experience while still in high school and still want to go to College in the US

My recollection is that there isn't a set fixture, but you can be reimbursed for reasonable expensive. Of course a player could put on some coaching sessions and get paid what ever the club wants to pay him.

Part time and Amatuer are very different things. Receive remuneration for playing you are professional, now matter how many hours of your time it takes up.  Receive remuneration for "coaching" or putting out the corner flags and putting up nets, that is a different story

I actually think its $300 per week. Its broken down further as $180 to cover training expenses and $120 for match day squad expenses

Yes, but facetiously.

But yeah no that all makes sense. Hopefully guys like Bertie Fish and Matt Tod-Smith aren't throwing away any chance they had at football in America for this, although I know Bertie's had trials in Europe in the past so that may not be his plan.

Toms decent, played most of North Shores campaign and is a good talker from the back and has pretty good distribution.

Looks very interesting signings. Anyone seen these guys play? I didn't manage to catch any NCR games this year, so can't really give an opinion on Pearson.

Can't say I'm sold on the Cook Islander. Looks inexperienced but I imagine Dan Allan is probably in the pecking order before him.

This squad is taking on a very interesting shape, starting to get a nice mix of young local talent and experienced foreigners, with a smattering of established SS Premiership players, even more annoyed I'm not able to make it home for the 24th now!

A few players out of the region being signed. I think this could be a good thing or a bad thing. Let's hope it's a great thing. The coach wouldn't sign a player if he didn't think they could make it.

Cook Islander is rather interesting, can be a real game changer for a team, hard as nails. Can be a hot head at times.
