Recently in the latest games in the NYL there have been appauling displays of referee.
There are 2 senior National League referees either being the 4th official or a Linesmen in each game when really they should be in the middle controlling the game and giving the younger ones experience on the line.. Because the younger referees have had no balls to make a decison and look scared and intimadated to tell the least from the players.

Just my opininon. Anyone else who has witnessed this whats yours??
Anyone who has been too the games what do you think the standard is and who is the best squad?

You've got to give the young refs a chance somewhere.  Youth League is the perfect opportunity really.

Can be frustrating as a player I'm sure, but remember it's a development league for everybody.

By the way isn't it a bit of a piss take that it's being called the National Youth League this year.  Really it's the Auckland + Friends youth league...

I agree that is the case.
And The standard isn't as good as last year. NZF needs to have a youth team for each franchise i reckon. Im not a player.

Worth it?

Obviously most franchises thought not.

In Wellington now though there are a lot of good 16 or 17 year olds who are really only playing high school 1st XI football, which is rubbish.  A lot of them will be getting time off the bench for senior teams, but not meaningful minutes at a good level.

Probably a nice to have rather than a must have in the current economic environment.

yea id have to agree there has been a slight drop in the quality of some of the teams.

its a shame, but its still such a great comp for up and coming players. it really is a great stepping stone, and works well to give young players an opportunity to experience playing, getting coaching, and training at a level that they simply do not receive at school or under 19's level and even at some mens teams.

and you wonder why nz youth teams have struggled in the past?? because of the attitude of some! a nice to have rather than a must have? of course its a must have! its all about getting the right set up at the franchises, volunteers who get off their arse help out and find the required sponsorship money... to be a good club you need a good youth set up jst look at manchester united of the early 90's!

I would argue that NZ youth teams have struggled equally whether there has been a National Youth League or not.

You're right though.  In an ideal world it would be an automatic part of being in the NZFC.  Fact of the matter is, though, that it's not.

Does anyone know or heard anything about this years "NYL" or "Auckland + Friends YL"?
Who's involved?
A draw maybe?
Any players to look out for?
All I have heard is that Wellington beat HBU 3-1 in a pre season game and a small amount of info on the HBU squad.

Or is this such a shambles it's not worth talking about anymore?

Fuck this stupid game

Is there any website that could at least list the players in each franchise and which club they are affiliated too, as would be good to see the next level of player coming thru

TW youth team trial is this Sunday. The comp kicks off on Feb 21. Have to be born 1990 or 1991 to be eligible.

You're a wee bit early, Top Left. The league doesn't start for another six weeks, so to expect that sort of info at this stage of the year ... there's more chance of Portsmouth paying their players for December and January before the info you're after materialises!

However, there are a few pointers to assist. The below info is extracted from the Competitions Review media release:

There are major changes to the National Youth League and its integration with the national league, with the number of youth development players in national league squads to be increased to a minimum of five (currently four) and at least two youth players included in any NZFC matchday squad. Conversely, up to two overage players will be permitted to play for their clubs National Youth League side on any given matchday.

To bring the youth league in line with two-yearly FIFA World Cup cycles, the age limit (currently U-19) will alternate between seasons and be linked to eligibility for upcoming the next FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Number of participating teams to mirror national league
Regional conference competition (Northern and Southern)
Top two teams from each conference play in finals series
Age limit to vary depending on FIFA U-20 World Cup cycle
Up to two national league (overage) players can play in NYL
Closer alignment with federations, franchises and clubs to ensure consistent development between the three groups

The latest news story on the Auckland City website gives the info you need from their perspective, Fat Controller:

They look to be the only club who are in any way organised to this extent so far. Others will doubtless get up to speed once they're out of summer holiday mode for another year.

Cheers,

JR

I had heard of the new changes to the league but I wasn't aware they were to be in place this year??

I may have jumped the gun a bit but I know that HBU have already selected their team and are well into training (since November) hence my interest in the other goings on around the country. As I said previously, I am aware of one pre-season game that has taken place, so I would think there must be some gossip going around in regards to teams/players.

I understand that the teams competing this year are:

Northern group - Auckland City, Waitakere United, Auckland Manakau, Waikato FC, Hawkes Bay United.

Southern group - Wellington, Youngheart Manawatu, Canterbury United, Otago United.

Wellington has its first trial this Sunday, although word on the street is that it may be pushed out another week to allow more players to come back from holidays.

I believe that was a trial game for Capital Football's team to head to the Dallas Cup in April.

Those boys are younger (mostly 92s) than the NYL players (90s and 91s).

Oh right. I think HBU has a big age range throughout the squad. Lacking depth up there I suppose.
