NZ all time domestic top scorer?

Was just being my usual tragic self and reading wikipedia pages...

Came across this;

New Zealand is not there!

I have to fess up and admit I've never got in amongst NZ domestic football, so know very little about top scorers over the years.

But it looks to me like someone with the passion and resources needs to get us in there 

*ahem* *cough* *bigpete65* *ahem* *cough*

From the last ten or so years I'm guessing these guys would be there abouts:

Kieran Jordan
Graham Little
Benjamin Totori
Roy Krishna

Probably missing a couple obvious ones

From the 1950s-60s there was John Wrathall who played for over 25 years, and recorded his 1000th goal (all levels) playing for Eastern Suburbs against Mt Albert Ponsonby in the 1971 national league.

Meant to add, Earle Thomas (grew up in Hamilton, but mostly played for Mt Wellington) scored 97 national league goals between 1970 and 1979

Way before my time Bruce but those seem like big numbers. The ones I've mentioned were strictly guesses as top national league strikers

Wrathall's goals were over a whole lifetime -obviously made possible by having an anorak Dad who kept count... not just national league.

Iain Ormond scored 90 national league goals from 1970-79 with Blockhouse Bay, North Shore and Stop Out.

And a special shout out to Waikato United's Darren Fellowes, who scored 87 goals (league and Chatham Cup) for The Bulls from 1991-96.

(NB, his tally traversed the Superclub era where the competition was in 3 regional leagues for the first round, then a national round for top 8, then a top four, then a final)

Other big scorers in national league were Bill de Graaf (Eastern Suburbs, Mt Wellington, North Shore) with 77 goals up to 1979.

I don't have figures for Brian Turner (Mt Wellington0 but suspect he would have been into the mid-60s.

Gary paddison (WDU, Stop Out, Blockhouse Bay), 60 goals, 

Derek Gibson-Smith (Stop Out) would have been 50-60 goals.

Wouldn't mind seeing their numbers though

Darren Fellows is a blast from the past! My dad was good mates with him during his playing career. Always told me he was a headcase!

I remember beinging told/reading G little scored 50-60ish national league goals.

Darren "Dash" Fellowes, with 87 goals in 130 matches for Waikato, was understandably a legend.

And he didn't score simple goals, just wonder goals, miracle goals, solo goals and rat up a drainpipe specials.

Ran like a scalded cat. Even on one leg he was quicker than most. Real character. On the day before one way match to Miramar in the early 90s he was thrown down the stairs at Victoria's Tavern after about 15 pints. Waikato had to pick him up from the police cells on the way to the airport.... Dash still did the business on the pitch.

NZ Players Player of the Year, 1992. But in other respects, yes, arguably a head case.

Leggy would have played with or against most of these guys except Fellows & Gibson-Smith.

Legg was with Eastern Suburbs (and a year with Courier Rangers?), from memory... same club as noted goalscorers Bill de Graaf, Mal Bland, Gary Jenkins and Thomas for some of the time (and earlier Wrathall). 

Paul Urlovic scored 51 goals in 115 appearances for Auckland City FC across all competitions (with many of these coming off the bench as a second half substitute during the Young/Jordan era). He had also scored an astonishing 136 goals in 137 matches for Central United's first team up until the end of their 2012 Golden Jubilee season (no doubt he netted a couple more last winter also). He has thus scored in the vicinity of 187 goals in approximately 252 matches for the Kiwitea Street clubs (plus whatever he did last winter). With the change in National League structure in 2004 not all of his Central United first team appearances were at "national" level, however still a very handy goals/games ratio from one of our best ever home grown goal poachers.

Keith Nelson from 70s/80s, Hamilton and Mt Wellington

Darren McLennan and Noel Barkley both scored loads of goals in the old Northern League before they started playing National League. Even Mark Cossey was very prolific I think, and Aaron Burgess as well - no doubt others outside of Auckland who have great local records

This thread doesn't have enough Kevin Thompson.

I was thinking Noel Barkely and Cossey actually.

Blair Scoullar used to knock a few away from memory.

Loving all the chat. Would love to see them all stacked up goals to games etc but guessing there's a lack of records on NZF/whoever's part? Pretty hard to keep track of I guess but cricket do it well

Mark Cossey scored 56 goals (league and cup) for Waikato United. He also had spells at Mt Maunganui, North Shore, Mt Albert Ponsonby (golden boot in the superclub era, 1994).

Of Keith Nelson, I do know he scored 15 apiece with Hamilton in 1977 and 1978 - and a further 15 in 1981 with Mt Wellington and 14 in 1982.

Noel Barkley (Mt Wellington) got 24 in 1989, and 18 the following year.

Single highest season effort in the old national league (pre-Superclub era, 1993-95) I'm pretty sure was Tony Laus (Waitakere) with 26 in 1990

The latest stats  I have is that in senior football John Wrathall  played 392 games for Eastern Suburbs and scored 360 goals, A truly remarkable achievement. I doubt that there is anyone that will come close. 

I just found info for stats for Hungaria from when they were formed in 1962. Andy Polyansky is nowhere near 360 goals but his ratio of is better he got 192 goals in 127 games (1.5 per game) - and I'm missing stats for him from 1965 and also 1963 when he played for Waterside! So he will easily have over 200 goals

From 1962 to 1966 Hungaria were playing in Wellington's lower leagues. In those years he was probably scoring a hatrick or more every second game. Still a wonderful player of course.

True, but even when Hungaria got into the top division he was still scoring a goal a game

And I saw all of 'em. At home any rate.

Was my hero when a young teen.  Was super stoked to work with him in my first job (he was a tobacco trade rep at the time).

What sort of career did he have in the UK before coming over?

Aaron's not head coach at Tech, and still makes the odd appearance for their senior team (although primarily plays 2nd grade these days, gives young defenders grief  and still bangs in a truck load)

He still has the best instinct for goal I've seen in a striker. He was someone I thought would genuinely break into being a top-class NSL level player but never quite panned out that way.
