The new structure will be the first time an entirely club-based national league has existed in New Zealand in women’s football.
NZ Football’s general manager of competitions and international events Lisa Jones said it was “exciting” to be able to release these plans.
“The main feedback that we've received from our stakeholders is that currently the season is way too long, so we wanted to obviously reduce the time that the season goes for. There was a lot of feedback, particularly around volunteers and the load of volunteers operating for 10 months of the year.
“That was a big driving force behind it.
“And there was also a real push towards doing a full two rounds nationally. At the moment, we do those regional phases, and then they only get one round to play best against best. That was a real push from the clubs, to make that a two round competition, so we put those two together.”
