NZFC: the pro-swearing anti-PC thread

Since being in New Zealand, I have really enjoyed going down to park island and watching Hawkes Bay play in the NZFC, I think the island is a fantastic little ground that has so much potential, and indeed I do get people telling me how it used to be packed to the rafters during the 80's and early 90's.
However, I do believe people's opinions are split when it comes to the question of creating a good atmosphere at the grounds or whether to market the league towards a more family orientated atmosphere.
As a member of the bay army, I try to create an atmosphere at park island every week, and most of the people I have spoken to that attend the games seems to think that we are now part of the show, and that people enjoy it. I'm not suggesting people turn up to hear us chant, that would be far off the mark, but I certainly believe that we are part of the atmosphere and we may make the game a more enjoyable experience perhaps?! and on the other hand, i'm sure we annoy plenty of people too.
In the chants I start off, I try to refrain from hard swearing at all costs, no c words, no f words, nothing like that, but we may occasionaly drop in a b*****d, usally aimed at the opposing goalkeeper.
Every week this week, we have had something thrown back at us...the first week we had a referee say he was going to lay a complaint as we said the word b*****d in a chant, last week at Manawatu, some daft woman came over and had a go as one of us uttered the b word.
I am all for families attending football matches, and I would certainly never seek to make it an uncomfortable experience for them to the point that they would never return, but I am also concerned that is often the way rugby is marketed...and what do we get...zero atmosphere at rugby games. I truely believe the atmosphere is what makes football special, and our clubs should be doing more to promote it instead of shunning it. If we were not there at Manawatu on sat, and indeed at park island for home games, there would be more noise in the Napier library. Opinions?

Swear on.  Kids hear worse in the playground anyway.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Wow you think that's bad? Couple years back Dewhurst thought us City fans were so 'vulgar' and 'disgusting' with our chants that he wrote a full page column on it in Soccer Talk.

Three for me, and two for them.

I've heard worse shouted at pretty much every NZFC ground in the North Island just from individuals... (not only me).  She'd have a heart-attack if she was near the Zone.

How's my driving? - Whine here

I think the problem is the NZFC is pretty family orientated...the phoenix is too,but the stadium is much bigger than that of an NZFC one...so the club just hides us in the corner away from the families  thats a bit harder to do in a small park atmosphere

Is a tricky one indeed. But i say go for it!

Yeah, but that's chanting anything, Buffy. Ytak fans aren't used to any noise at all from their fans are they?

....and Dewhurst is a muppet anyway.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Thanks for all your responses, As my friend put it...going to a football match and not expecting anyone to swear is kinda like going to church and not expecting prayers. The lack of atmosphere at games is one of the reason we wanted to start to chanting at games...it makes it so much more interesting...but people writing in and calling fans 'vulgar' and 'disgusting' is too far. I almost felt embarrassed for one of our club officials when he come over and said to me "Tom, can you tell your lot to stop using the word B*****d, the refs finds it offensive and wants to lay a complaint"....the best thing was...we were calling the ref a fat b*****d!!!!! Obviously quite sensitive that chap

Ytak don't have any fans. They have spectators, who watch in sullen silence a la rugbyheads.

Exactly rugby heads that dont actually know how to support a team except for waving stupid banners around or mexican waves or something....I really wanted to tell her to F off....I thought about it but I figured it would have had worse consequences!

FFS!!  It is possible to make witty, loud and let's face it downright hilarious chants without having to swear at all. You're just being lazy you f*****g t*#%ers!!

But seriously: Swearing doesn't = atmosphere. Loud chanting = atmosphere.

I have to say b**t*rd is pretty mild though and Smithy is right about the playground.

From another slant they're just words, who decided theyre 'bad' words? What did said words do to become 'bad'? Did they rob a bank? Or kill a man? Or steal from the church money collection plate?

Seriously, words = letters thrown together to form different noises that constitute communication.

Three for me, and two for them.

I'm not trying to say that you have to absolutely swear to create an atmosphere, what I'm getting at is that it would be nice to get away with the occasional curse word in a chant...for example if one of us happened to mutter b*****d in a chant, not having some jumped up thick as two planks woman telling me her 5 year old sister heard it and that i have ruined her life.....P.S...why has the name of the thread changed? I didn't call it that, sounds good though lol

I sympathise deeply with you stockportcounty. At the end of the day, there's nothing wrong with a bit of swearing at footy - it's always been that way. My dad used to take me to Chelsea (or a non-league game) as a kid and there was always swearing. It didn't mean I had to come out with it as a kid, in fact I knew I'd get a strong clip round the ear.

The games I went to in NZ lacked atmosphere of any description. Even if there was a chant it was only ever about two blokes coming out with some cringe-worthy American-style cheerleader melody. I was even taken to a Warriors rugby league game and, save for a couple of chants of "Warriors! Warriors!", there was nothing - no passion! Don't let the PC brigade ruin creating an atmosphere - all footballers will tell you that they thrive on a decent atmosphere.PSG552008-12-03 21:41:22

Er..... and there you have the crux of it. I guess it depends what you are trying to communicate to other people.

Personally I will swear like a trooper when things aren't going right on the farm but I won't swear in public because I think it is unnecessary and I am quite capable of conveying my message without doing it. If the only way you can convey your message is by swearing then by all means cut loose

We could of course all just grunt loudly and probably achieve the same thing

Cheers for that mate..perhaps we should start a protest, or sign all our names and march down to NZFC headquarters!! The players at HB love it and I think it really helps them and gives them a lift...Seriously, the last game I was at here there would have been more noise in a library and its hard for me to take when 'm used to sitting in edgely park or old trafford where it is far from quiet!! The only question is however....how do I tell those stupid cows that come up to us and tell us to stop chanting to f**k off!

Well I guess where that makes me different from you, I was merely making a point, and that is in no way sl*gging off New Zealand at all. So I'm glad you used your head and refrained

If you're from the UK, and have been going to the footie there, it does take a wee while to get used to the different atmosphere you get at games here.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
